Re: switching from w10 to mint,in preparation,several things i want suggestions for,please

Hi Noal, I have just done this exercise for my wife although I chose the Cinnamon edition as a more familiar look and feel for someone coming from Windows 10. Linux Mint has UFW which can be configured to allow access to hosted services (incoming) and control Application traffic (outgoing). Beyond t...

Re: Best kernel linux mint 19.2 - Thinkpad t480

Hi,

I have the latest 4.15.0 and 5.0.0 kernels installed. I generally use the 5.0.0 kernel but the 4.15.0 one is there in the event that 5.0.0 produces undesirable behaviour.

Re: Are You Killing Your SSD with Dual Boot ?

Hi, I am very conservative about the use of SSDs. I restrict mine to serving /usr only. This provides speed-ups for binaries, libraries and application resources. Outside of updates, this can be viewed as largely a read-only scenario with minimal writes. The gains from using a SSD are there without ...

Re: DNS problems after installing Samba

Hi, In a standard installation /etc/resolv.conf is dynamically managed by systemd-resolved and shouldn't require replacing. If your hostname has been correctly configured in systemd (there are actually 3 settings) then /etc/resolv.conf should have a search entry for your domain name which will be ap...

Re: apt/apt-get update problems

Hi,

There do seem to be problems with the Oracle Virtualbox repository at the moment. That could be contributing to your issues.

Re: [Solved] Openshot Upgrade

Hi,

The OpenShot team have a PPA repository. If you install from that you'll get updates as they roll-out and dependencies will be taken care of for you.

Hi,

I use Audacity for audio processing tasks (including recording). You could also capture audio using VLC.

Hi, Software-wise I use FreeCAD (the development team operate a PPA so I have the latest version), Ultimaker Cura (using an AppImage to have the latest version) and Slic3r (again using an AppImage for the latest version). I have a couple of printers. A Mendel90 which I built from a kit in 2013 (and ...

Re: [SOLVED] Mint 19 Cinnamon: SSD for OS and HDD for storage?

Hi Dan, Why did you choose BTRFS -- especially on the SSD? I've read that BTRFS has some issues with SSD write operations. Did you configure your BTRFS in any special way beyond dropping atime[/b] recording? I chose BTRFS for its support of native snapshots and I use Timeshift to manage those snapsh...

Re: Evolution Mail Does not like gMail

Hi, How did you configure your GMail account? I've been using Evolution on Linux Mint 19 Tara and 19.1 Tessa without issues. If you configure your Google Account in Online Account Settings a GMail account will be automatically configured for you in Evolution. The only problem I've found in using it ...

Be very careful when uninstalling from the Locally installed and obsolete section. There are a lot of required packages that are listed there.

Re: Evolution Mail not connecting to Gmail or Hotmail

When you create a Google account (in the Online Accounts settings) GMail should be configured in Evolution automatically for you. If you cannot authenticate to Google then check your Google account setup. It may indicate that the authentication token has expired. Evolution certainly does work with G...

That seems to be standard behaviour. I think the error is in providing both a Settings and Wizard icon. There doesn't appear to any other method to configure Timeshift other than through the Wizard interface.

Re: Software Source error 'Cannot add PPA'

You add PPAs under the PPAs choice in the Software Sources application using the following format:

Code: Select all

ppa:username/ppaname
The PPA listings on Launchpad show you what to enter for the username and ppaname fields.

Re: Mint 19.1 Tessa, SSH problems

That must be a consequence of trying to connect to localhost which is running a X server. I use SSH between Linux Mint 19.1 computers. It was only necessary to install the SSH server (which also enables it) and enable the SSH ports in the firewall utility (after enabling the firewall - it defaults t...

Re: why there is no dictionary when using amazon reader with firefox?

It could be that the Oxford Dictionary content is DRM protected. By default, handling of DRM protected content is disabled.

Try enabling the checkbox at: Preferences -> General -> Digital Rights Management (DRM) Content -> Play DRM-controlled content

Is this with rsync snapshots? I'm using BTRFS snapshots and recently updated LM 19 to 19.1 and all seems to be working OK.

Re: Updating AppImages to updated versions

Unless the application packaged in the AppImage features an update check mechanism then you'll have to do it the old-fashioned way i.e. website visits or email notifications (where provided). I generally rename the AppImage file to something simple then you can just replace it with the updated versi...
