Re: Random freezes

Mint 19.2 boots and mint menu, firefox, file manager and terminal works on and off for each boot. Clicking the wifi icon causes the above not to work at all. Opening terminal and running dmesg | less produces output but as soon as I click "edit" to select all and copy the terminal shuts off. A bit h...

Re: Random freezes

I know,- linux works for most, but not all. There’s a database that lists which computers work with which distros and quite a few machines don’t go along well with all versions of linux,- some of them not at all.

Mint 19.2 mate: mint menu quits, menu icon disappears then system freezes. 2nd. attempt: Lots of error messages: squashfs error: unable to read page etc . . . Mint 19.1 mate: Same behaviour as mint 19.2. My experience with linux distros is that most of them will not work. The only one that works par...

Re: Random freezes

Mint 19.2 Xfce. Same thing as with cinnamon,-desktop comes up fine. Clicking wifi icon, choosing my network,- icon disappears. Clicking the app-icon results in a message: ’’Plugin whisker menu left the panel etc’’. Also fails to execute xfce-terminal and file manager (child process exo-open). Batter...

Smartmontools (short test) reports no errors.

Re: Random freezes

I’ll give smartmontools a try.
This will be one more step in checking hardware.
So far I can assume that CPU and RAM is OK after running memtest86.
Next will be checking the harddrive . . .

Re: Random freezes

Mint 19.2 cinnamon live session boots OK.
Freezes when I attempt to connect to wifi.
Mouse cursor moves but no response when clicking on icons after choosing the network.
I’ll give mate and Xfce a try after downloading the iso’s.

Random freezes

HP Pavilion, Linux Mint 18.1 Laptop came with Win10 with a host of problems from day one: Freezes, sluggishness, fan constantly at full speed, BSOD's etc. No problems in safe mode . HP troubleshooting utility reports no problems. Linux Mint 18.1: Less problems than in Win10, but still random freezes...

Re: Freezes, stuttering youtube vids and blinking capslock.

Thanks for answering . . . Laptop is clean as a whistle inside. I've been thinking along the same lines as you . . . two OS's, same fault (not quite the same but similar),-must be hardware. But that arises another suspicion . . . One can't trust the techs at HP since I sent it in for servicing and t...

Freezes, stuttering youtube vids and blinking capslock.

HP Pavilion laptop, Mint 18.1, AMD CPU, Radeon GPU. Cursor freezes from time to time, when this happens the fan revs up a bit and mouse/keyboard becomes inactive. Recovering after a few seconds. Youtube vids: Starts fine, sometimes OK for several minutes then video halts, starts to stutter and the f...

Re: Linux Mint experience so far

On my Lenovo the only Linux releases that have worked are one release of Ubuntu and Mint 17.2. The rest have not wanted to install at all. As for my HP Pavillion the only release that has mostly worked is Mint 18.1. All other Mint versions either crashes during install or refuses to install altogeth...

Linux Mint experience so far

Hello all. My Linux experience is somewhat mixed. I own two computers, an old Lenovo and a new HP Pavillion. I used to run Ubuntu on the old Lenovo and it's been working fine apart from some minor bugs developing over time. I've tried installing newer versions of Ubuntu on the Lenovo without success...
