Re: Windows Files Tranfer over a Home Network

Thanks, rene. Linux just seems like it has fought with me every step of the way. Nothing is intuitive to me with Linux, the way it's mostly been with Windows. Probably the fact that I'm 62 tomorrow doesn't help much. But, to be honest, you're right about Windows networking. Before, when hey used to ...

Re: Windows Files Tranfer over a Home Network

Well, I dropped my firewall and tried again with Nemo. At least I got the password prompt, but, still, no connection. I see a box for Domain. It is prefilled with the name "WORKGROUP". I've changed my workgroup's name to MIKE on my Windows 10 computer, and I tried that. Still, no help. -CodeSchlocker

Re: Windows Files Tranfer over a Home Network

Yeah, rene, I agree. I hate firewall issues. I just don't understand them. I do have another Windows laptop I could try, but, it is really getting to be more effort than what it's worth. That's why I started this post asking if someone had a better solution than Samba, which, although I've been told...

Re: Windows Files Tranfer over a Home Network

OK, Altair4, I found the "text entry box" that you demonstrate in your post and put in: smb://mikes-desktop/network_folder which should be a shared folder in Windows 10. But, I keep getting back the same error message: Could not display "smb://mikes-desktop/network_folder I have no idea, why everyth...

Re: Windows Files Tranfer over a Home Network

Also, the terminal is providing another error:

GtkDialog mapped without a transient parent. This is discouraged.

Linux Mint, just doesn't like me.

Re: Windows Files Tranfer over a Home Network

I bought a 1TB SSD drive to place into my laptop. When I do, I'm going to try Ubuntu 20.4

I'm just running into wall after wall with Linux Mint.

I'm finding Linux infinitely harder to learn than Windows. Too steep a learning curve for an ex-Windows veteran.

Arghh!!!! Share name = Computer's Name? I tried nemo smb://Mikes-Desktop.local/share-name and I get the error message: Could not display "smb://mikes-desktop.local/share-name". Re: Windows Files Tranfer over a Home Network

Kadaitcha,

OK. I checked my files for /media/mike and all I have is a folder WINDOW_10.

So, maybe I need to change the second line of the config snippet you provided for me to

path = /media/mike/WINDOW_10

I will try that.

No, same thing.

Re: Windows Files Tranfer over a Home Network

Yeah, I just tried to access my Windows 10 desktop again. I use Nemo 4.2.3, select Go > Network > double-click on Windows Network And I get the error message: Unable to mount location Failed to retrieve shared list from server: no such file or directory I just think that there is no clear cut way of...

Re: Windows Files Tranfer over a Home Network

AZgl1500,

It seems like one time, I did access files on my Windows 10 desktop. But, the second time I tried it, I could no longer access them.

I just edited my samba config file as instructed by the previous poster. Now I have to figure out how to access the Windows folder.

Re: Windows Files Tranfer over a Home Network

Thanks, Kadaitcha Man, I'll try this tomorrow and let you know how it works. I'm glad my username, like my real name is mike. Much easier than CodeSchlocker. I watched many videos on setting up samba, and did at least ten searches, and I could not get a straight as answer as you've given me on how t...

Windows Files Tranfer over a Home Network

Is there any good solution, app, that can be used to share (transfer) windows files to a Linux machine? I've found a couple of very good solutions to see Linux files with my Windows 10 desktop, my favorite is Swish, which even allows me to manipulate, remotely, Linux files with a Windows 10 client, ...

Re: Can't open Software Manager and Software Sources

Thanks again, Damien!

You are so right. If only I had taken your advice and reloaded, I would have seen that.

Like I said, I am so unfamiliar with the whole repository thing.

Could not refresh the list of updates

Since this is along the same lines as the original poster, I hope this is a good place to post this: In the Update Manager, for a couple of weeks now, I'm getting the error message: Could not refresh the list of updates Repository 'http://dl.google.com/linux./chrome/deb stable Release' changed its '...

Re: Java jdk1.8.0_181

Thanks, Karl, That seems to straighten out the JAVA_HOME environmental variable issue. But, I just run mvn -v again and get a message from bash saying that I need to install it, which, I believe I already have. I think I know the issue. I need to edit PATH in the .bashrc or the .profile. I think tha...

Java jdk1.8.0_181

Hello all, And, thanks for the help in the past. I want to install the Java Developer Kit, along with Apache-Maven, so that I can do some Java tutorials in VS Code. I installed jdk1.8.0_181 to /opt/java/jdk1.8.0_181/bin and apache-maven to /home/mike/apache-maven/apache-maven-3.5.4/bin. According to...

Jeremy B, You are a genius. Up and running, and I thank you very, very much. And you're right also. I looked up Chicony Electronics Ltd., I think that is the name of the company, and they are manufacturers of imaging devices, cameras, etc. The camera on my notebook, which I have hardly ever used mus...
