Re:[solved] Mounting drives on start up?

I finally got the app 'Disk' back. Its full name is 'gnome-disk-utility', & reinstalled with the Terminal. Set /dev/sda1 (named 'other'), to mount on startup, and the path to /mnt/5DBB27381B4BD734. Copied /mnt/5DBB27381B4BD734 to text editor. Opened VMware/Windows 7, & pasted /mnt/5DBB27381B4BD734 i...

Re: Mounting drives on start up?

The app 'Disks' has vanished, and I can't find it in the repository's, so now I have Nemo opening on start up so all I have to do is click on the required drives. This way I won't forget :) I found an article on the Net about the damage that could be caused by setting the drive mounts on start up. I...

Re: Mounting drives on start up?

The drives mount automatically when they are selected in Nemo. When I set them to mount on start up, they do, but are visible to Mint only. VMWare can't see them. If I dismount them in Nemo, & then remount them, they become visible to VMWare.

Mounting drives on start up?

I have Mint 18.3, with Windows 7 running on VMWare. Works fine if I mount the shared drives before using Windows. Sometimes I forget, so I set the partitions to mount on start up, wih 'Disk'. They do mount on start up, but for some reason are hidden from VMWare. If I remount them manually all is wel...

SFS software files?

I have just been setting up a laptop with Linux FatDog 64 installed.
I downloaded a SFS file containing Viirtual Box. These files are not installed, but run as is. There are hundreds of SFS files available for Fat Dog.

I wonder if SFS files are available for Mint :?:

Re: Disaster after cleaning [SOLVED]

Why not use 'Bleachbit'? There are two versions. One runs as Root, and deals with system rubbish, and the other user rubbish. I have been using them for a two years now, and had no problems. They are both in the Software Manager.

Re: UEFI and Legacy boot

Just install Mint with UEFI Boot. Your computer most likely has a GPT partition table. Put your mint iso on a USB stick with Rufus, set it to GPT UEFI only. Make sure that Fast boot is disabled in Windows, because it will lock the partitions. Enable Legacy in BIOS Disable secure boot in BIOS Windows...

Re: Install Linux Mint on a dell inspiron 7559

I have a Dell 17" 5770 with 8th generation Core i7 cpu. Because it had Windows 10 in it has a GPT partition table, with UEFI boot. I formatted the drive (ext4) & and installed Mint 18.3, no problems. Because I need windows for some software, I shortened the Mint partition (SDA1), & made another part...

Download 'Refind' from https://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/installing.html Refind installs from Mint, & places a new loader alongside Grub & Microsoft. Remember to check in BIOS that Refind is 1st boot. Refind will only work with EFI loaders. Refind is automatic and detects any kernels, or other loader...

Re: Dual boot error does not start

Windows always becomes the default loader after installation. Open the BIOS & set Ubuntu to the default loader. If your computer loaders are EFI/GPT you can install "Refind" in your Mint, this will place its own loader in the the EFI boot folder. Set the BIOS default loader to "Refind". Refind will ...

<solved> Re: Problem installing 2 Mint versions on same laptop

Thanks for the help. I now have both 18.3 & 19.2 on the same machine, and have no problems installing software.
I have updated the kernel in 18.3, & it is just as fast as 19.2. I can't see any point in changing to 19.2, as it doesn't do anything that 18.3 won't do.

Re: Problem installing 2 Mint versions on same laptop

How do I "set the newly created ext4 partition to be mounted as root ( / )." ?
I have tried again & got the following :-
" No root file system is defined, please correct from the 'partitioning menu'

Where is the 'partitioning menu' ?
The partition table is GPT, & loaders are UEFI.

[solved] Problem installing 2 Mint versions on same laptop

I have a Dell Inspiron 17 laptop which has Mint 18.3 installed as my main OS, and Windows 7 Ultimate for Windows website software. I have 87 Gb of free space on the main drive (Samsung SSD) which I use for trying Linux Distros. I have never had a problem with other Distros just Mint 19.2. When I try...

Re: I cannot dual boot linux mint 19.1

If you install 'Refind' loader in Mint it will create a new loader in the EFI folder.
Set your boot order in BIOS making Refind the 1st loader. All the other loaders will be listed by Refind, even USB's. It will only work with UEFI systems, not MBR/DOS.

Re: How do I reinstall Windows and keep my grub

Do NOT delete the small UEFI partition, it contains all the various loaders which have been installed. You can leave the Microsoft loader in the UEFI folder incase you wish to install Windows again. To remove Windows just format its partition. Open the BIOS and move Windows to the bottom of the boot...

Re: Dual Booted System Launches Windows Automatically

The most common reason is that Windows has changed the Boot order in the BIOS. Windows likes to be number one, and will change the boot order if it does a big update. In your case Ubuntu should be first. I use a Boot loader called "Redirect" which installs from Mint. It is completely automatic, and ...

Re: UEFI Boot handling, manuals, guidelines, tips and tricks

I had endless problems with Multi Booting, mainly caused by Windows 10 trying to dominate. I found solved the problem by installing "Redirect", a small program which is downloaded to Mint, then run. It places a loader in the UEFI partition. You must check the BIOS boot order & ensure that "redirect"...

Re: What size /root swap and /home partitions?

I find the easiest way to install Mint dual booted with Windows, is to provide an "un-allocated" space, and choose to install alongside Windows. Mint will make its own partitions in that space, and if you have more than 4GB Ram, will probably not make a swap partition, often only has one partition. ...

You can run foll. Command
sudo update -grub
Should I "sudo update -grub" from a USB stick? The installed Mint will not be running, unless I can boot it direct from the BIOS.
