Re: Switch audio source from HDMi is buggy

I agree that hot-plugged or hot-unplugged hardware not always gives rise to desired sound configuration changes but for me it works just fine to change the output hardware in the sound configuration utility that you can reach via the loudspeaker icon in the systray och via Control Center. Cheers, go...

Re: Why is 19.1 so terribly slow?

I'm not an expert, but you do have a somewhat old computer. I'd suggest trying Mint Mate or Xfce. As you can see in the signature my laptop has an old i3 dating back to 2012. Mint Mate really lets this old hardware shine. It's not at all sluggish for ordinary day-to-day tasks so I most definitely s...

Re: Quick rename with tab key

Don't know if there's any linux file manager with the said win10 explorer functionality but if you fancy a particular file manager you can always make a request to the program maintainer and hope that he/she finds it useful and doable. If it is multi rename you are after there are several file manag...

Re: Will Linux leave my Windows 7 system drive alone?

There are never any warranties when you install a new operating system. You are always advised to make backup copies of important stuff. Having said that, I have never experienced any troubles when doing dual boot installation of Linux and Windows and you're doing it in the best order. Windows first...

Re: [solved] Multiple Desktops in Mate

The interpretation of your result depends on how many workspaces you do have, I imagine. My guess is that you have 7 and that the cinnamon number overrides the gnome number. On my desktop I have Mate 1.16 and when running gsettings list-recursively | grep num-workspaces I get: org.gnome.desktop.wm.p...

Re: What causes Caja 1.14.2 in Mint 18 Sara to see USB drives as read-only

I don't think it's to do with Caja at all but rather the way it was mounted. The automount process sometimes plays tricks on us and sometimes does not even work. If you don't get write access directly I'd recommend you to unmount the USB-drive and remount it manually like so: sudo mount -t vfat /dev...

Re: USB to RS232 adaptors Which one?

Can't you just google the model or is it so old that the label is gone or you don't get any hits or the vendor has gone out of business?

Re: USB to RS232 adaptors Which one?

Linux has a working driver for Prolific pl2303 so whatever works with that should be OK. I'm running kernel 3.10.0 on my desktop which is pretty old so it may be that more recent kernels have better hardware support in that driver. To get details you probably need to explore kernel source documentat...

Re: Mint 19.2 Spyder3

I don't have Mint 19.2, yet, so I don't have a clue to what's going on in your system but if you can't get it solved there's always third party Python e.g. Anaconda but if you choose to use Anaconda be sure not to put the path to its' binaries in your PATH variable as it may otherwise interfere with...

Re: Network Settings for Mobile Broadband

I don't think you have to worry about that. To me it seems rather pointless for a provider to require a blank password when it is just as easy and more secure to require a real password. Moreover, if such a thing should be used in the process I imagine it would be far easier to deal with that on the...

Re: Terminals

Terminal programs differ in the amount of bells and whistles that go with them (bookmarks, colors and what not) and all desktop environments have their own take on what should be configurable and in what way. I prefer xterm because it's very basic and does not get in the way and yet configurable eno...

Couldn't/shouldn't you have asked them the question here then? ;) I asked in this forum because I've got Mint on my laptop and the problem originated there. Besides, the CentOS fora are nowhere near as active. ;) Regarding software built for another platform, your best solution is usually to rebuil...

Just some details since you seem interested. :) Of course I'm interested and your clarification is most welcome! @gm10 I haven't tried your neat command tweak for the .desktop-file on my laptop yet but I just did on my desktop which now after many years running various OpenSuse releases is running CentOS 7.7. A definite change for the better compared to Leap 15.0 which I don't miss at all. So much was broken t...

Numeric keypad decimal separator

For keyboards having a numeric keypad the key mapping for the decimal separator may be a problem as is evident by posts not only in this forum. I have a Swedish keyboard with comma (Del) on the numeric keypad and consequently I get a comma when I hit it (in most cases). This behaviour is actually co...
