Re: Can I install Linux Mint on a 64GB USB in a persistent state?

Thanks! I also just came across this tutorial... https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=275536 Will have better look tomorrow when back home. Just an update for the OP - I did that tutorial the other day on a 64GB USB and it all works great. Couple of notes * Make sure you use Linux Mint...

Re: Can I install Linux Mint on a 64GB USB in a persistent state?

I do not wish to lose my original OS in the process. Yes. I have a Mint install running on a 128GB USB. Just point the installer at your device. Ha!! If only it were that simple. I did this exact thing the other day at home thinking I'd be able to bring along my 64GB USB to work and use it here... ...

Re: Time to talk about WhatsApp

What are people's opinions on WA? I don't use it but you could without too much loss of privacy by simply being an observer, not a participant. Pretty much how I treat Facebook now. I kinda need to be there because work has a FB group for roster swaps. Every few days I log in, read/contribute bare ...

Re: iMac 4.1 installation of lmde Cindy boot issue

Good morning all, I just finished installing LMDE Cindy on my old iMac. During the install, I deleted the existing Mac partition and gave Mint the entire disk. After install, the iMac booted to a file folder with a question mark flashing. I went through the install 3 times, I tried manually partiti...

Re: I found a better OS than Linux Mint 19.x

Switched from 18.3 last night, 19.x does not work on my ultrabook, works slow as duck... LMDE3 works better/faster/stronger :)) than 18.3 Similar experience with this 2007 Macbook. Tried 20 different distros... including the usual suspects promoted as being "good for low spec hardware"... which gav...

Base (stretch) mirrors unreachable

I'm in Australia and noticing on LMDE3 the Base (stretch) mirrors are all Unreachable. There's 21 of them, mostly Australia the rest from New Zealand and Pacific Islands - so I am leaving as default https://deb.debian.org/debian but I'm not sure if that even works - is there a way to test?? All the ...

Re: Has Gparted been modified?

Don't forget to unmount partitions before you resize them! I had the opposite thing confuse me! I used gparted to create and I couldn’t figure out how to mount the new partition for install as the mount option on the gparted menu was disabled and the installer demanded a root partition be available...

Running well on old Macbook

I’ve been playing with an old white 2007 MacBook and Cindy is the most stable distro on it that has worked well for me. I recently upgraded the hardware to 3GB RAM (couldn’t get 2 x 2GB chips to work, only 1 in combo with one of the original 1GB chips), and a 256GB SSD. I found the other Mint distro...

Re: New Smartphone

Paranoid? no, that background crap uses up the battery, and that to me, is a NO NO.... I have been retired for 10 years, there is nothing out there in Internet Land that I need to be notified about Right Now! I agree and think it's sensible. In the first few years of smartphone growth it was all 'c...

Re: New Smartphone

Thanks heaps for all the responses. It's given me a bit to think about (and weirdly re-assuring) to see other people have similar company biases... and oddly inconstant behaviors when you plug devices in. I guess at the end of the day this isn't life or death, and there are always work-arounds, so I...

New Smartphone

Hi all.. just after advice. I have been using iPhone 6s for 3 years ... been a good phone. Most of that time I using Win 10, now using Mint 19 and it's time to upgrade phone. Find the 6s screen too small for my ageing eyes and it has been a bit of hassle getting it to talk to Mint... and just genera...

Re: What sends noobs running back to Windows?

Looking at user group 2 - what reasons do you think send new people running away from Linux? Well.. that was me. Years of frustration with Windows and then growing incompatibility of an older OS/X iMac which I loaded with Ubuntu and was quite happy with, until the hard drive crashed. It was time to...

Re: Hello, I'm Zach. I also have some questions.

Hi Zach, and welcome aboard. I'm new here myself, but have a long background in computers. I recently saw a video on YouTube which made me realise Linux is almost ubiquitous. It's everywhere because it's strong and reliable. Take a look at Linux is Freaking Weird - it's a bit funny, but also opens y...

Hi from Melbourne Australia

Hi from "Down Under"... I'm a part time enthusiast. Started on TRSDOS back in 1982, and now... many operating systems later (Win/Mac/Ubuntu/Win10), here I am on Linux Mint. I knew something was very wrong when I went for 3 months recently without even turning on my Windows 10 desktop because the who...

Epson wifi scanning probs? Try this

I have an Epson ET-3600 (ecotank multifunction). When I first installed Mint it was all installed fine and I could print and I could scan... everything you want. Then at some point I enabled the Firewall, some days went by and I was printing fine, but then I needed to scan... no scanner detected. Er...

Re: Epson V200 Scanner not working in Mint 19

Have you tried scanning with Firewall turned off? My Epson Multifunction scanner could not be found as soon as I enabled the Firewall in Mint 19, but worked fine with Firewall off. If you find it works with Firewall off, try adding a rule to your Firewall that allows incoming UDP connections on port...
