Just newly converted to Mint 19.1 and it's running all my media as smooth as silk. I did try to upgrade from 17 to 19 and gave up.
I tried the upgrade route, and it worked.

Re: Just say NO to Mint19

I put Mint on to an elderly neighbours machine, he was delighted, so fast and easy. However, I could not get his old Brother printer to work. Somehow I can't find your forum post asking for help with this... I didn't ask the forum, perhaps I should have done, I did have a bit of a search on ...

Re: Just say NO to Mint19

That's excellent, I have had good luck with some printers, however, I put Mint on to an elderly neighbours machine, he was delighted, so fast and easy. However, I could not get his old Brother printer to work. Ended up putting W7 on for him, shame.

Re: Just say NO to Mint19

Yes, I had some issues with Mint 19, mainly because I'm not Linux literate enough. As mentioned, I'll stick with 18.3 for the moment, but thank goodness we have a viable alternative to Windows 10, free as well, excellent.

Re: Just say NO to Mint19

I'm able to make WINE work in Mint 19 by doing following these (found in https://wiki.winehq.org/Ubuntu): sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386 wget -nc https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/Release.key sudo apt-key add Release.key sudo apt-add-repository https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ sudo apt-...

Re: Just say NO to Mint19

This is not a WINE version issue, in LM18.x I used wine 2+ absolutely fine (apart from the outdated POL scripts issue which incidentally mostly used v1.6) but in LM19 there were problems right from the start NO MATTER WHAT VERSION WAS USED.... however 1.6 had slightly less issues comparatively spea...

Re: Just say NO to Mint19

That seems like a highly emotional response.... four thoughts. Re: Just say NO to Mint19

So how do you explain others having it running perfectly fine in Mint 19? I certainly have not got enough technical knowledge to answer that, however, it's pretty clear to see that quite a few are having trouble, when they didn't with previous issues off Mint. So how did we get from "mint 19 simply...

Re: Just say NO to Mint19

I've got limited computer knowledge, my experience with Wine and Mint 19 is not good, still not got it running. No problems with previous iterations of Mint and Wine.

Think I'll give 19 a miss until 19.1. Although to be fair, Mint 19 worked quite well other than this.

Email notifications of post

Hi there, not sure if this is the right place to post this, apologies if it's not, and perhaps a Moderator would move if required.

I'm not getting email notification of posts that I have taken part in.

How do I turn that on?

Many thanks

Re: My whine about Wine and Mint 19

However, it worked! Sort of, everything seemed OK, until I tried Wine, just doesn't start when trying to open a Windows .exe. What happens when you wine filename.exe in a terminal ?? FWIW, I had wine 3.0 stable installed in Mint 18.3, upgraded (not new install) to Mint 19, and ended up with two ver...

Re: My whine about Wine and Mint 19

Thought that I'd try rolling back from Mint 19 (with Wine not working) to Mint 18.3 using Timeshift.

It didn't take all that long, and worked, and Wine is working too.

Re: My whine about Wine and Mint 19

Good luck with this issue. I have been down the same road a couple times - all for nothing. Wine works as expected in LM 18.3. It does not in LM19. It will serve only to exasperate you trying to explain that it DOES NOT WORK ON LM19! I went back to 18.3. Short of that, I can boot as Windows - which...

Re: My whine about Wine and Mint 19

Right, I started with a fresh installation of Mint 18.3 64 Bit. Installed Wine from Software Manager. Did a System Update. Everything working, including Wine. Did a System Snapshot using Timeshift. Did the upgrade from Mint 18.3 to Mint 19 using these instructions: https://community.linuxmint.com/tu...

Re: My whine about Wine and Mint 19

Hello, a60man. On Mint 18.3 you might use winecfg from the Wine submenu and find out which Windows version Wine tries to mimick. I just remembered this: On Mint 18.x Wine 1.6.2 is told to pretend to be Windows XP SP3. No trouble with my (Windows) applications. On Mint 19 Wine 3.0 defaulted to prete...

Re: My whine about Wine and Mint 19

Hello, a60man. Now, can I update 18.3 to 19 through system update? No, you cannot upgrade from Mint 18.3 to Mint 19 with the help of Update Manager. Clem's official step by step instruction on how to upgrade in-place from Mint 18.3 to Mint 19 can be found here: How to upgrade to Linux Mint 19 It ha...

Re: My whine about Wine and Mint 19

Hi there, you can see above that Wine works in 18.3 as above, so perhaps the software sources for 19 can be changed to use the sources for 18.3? Not going to happen, users want the most recent version, not an old one. If the missing menu entries bother you, you can just create them yourself in LM19...

Re: My whine about Wine and Mint 19

Hi there, thanks for the reply, a bit too technical for me to understand though. He's saying the only difference about Wine in Mint 19 is that menu entries are not created (due to a change Wine made, not Mint). Everything else works the same. Hi there, you can see above that Wine works in 18.3 as a...
