Re: Frequent Updates

first thing i do is manually check for updates if update manager doesn't show updates right after turning computer on. haven't ever had an issue. i always thought microsoft was stupid in their once a month windows updates as any one know, bug's, security issues and stuff don't just happen once a mon...

Re: What Version To Install On Older Laptop?

i'd say upgrade the memory, if possible, or at least install a ssd, then it would run great. ssd's are very reasonably priced.

i had mint 19.3 on a laptop with a slower cpu then your's and it ran pretty well. not a speed burner, but usable. installed a ssd and way noticeably better.

Re: Kernel version 5.3 - report

heck, i had the 5.3 kernel installed on my 10 year old laptop for a bit and it worked great on it. didn't fix the slow shut down issue i was having though, so reverted back to the 4.15 kernel. even tried it on my kids 15 year old laptop just for kicks and it worked flawlessly on it also. might be de...

Re: Should I run upgrade from v19.2 to v19.3 ?

the point release updates usually go very well with no problems. i've upgraded all 7 of my machines without a single issue as soon as it was released. 19.2 to 19.3 isn't really that big of an upgrade and is done in almost no time. now, when the next major LTS release comes out, you will want to back...

Re: turn on the laptop one day and it's BRICKED

not at ALL sure about this gpt partition stuff and especially the EFI partition, does Mint offer that option in the install from Mint live ???? gonna have to do more research I see. lurking in the backround is WHY this happened in the first place. I've run Mint for a couple years now with no proble...

from what I've seen, it would also seem that most of those EX Vista PCs generally had an 64bit cpu,
& it was only the O/S that was 32bit.
i was fairly certain that this laptop did have 32bit vista on it. nice to know i might not be losing it totally :)

thanks for that

Re: question about 32bit os installed on 64bit machine

I don't think 32-bit was the reason for slow shutdown. That's probably caused by something else on the operating system configuration you used at the time. While a 32-bit install may be preferred on a 2GB system, because it uses a little bit less memory per application, you should in general prefer...

Re: is the option"erase disk and install linux mint" safe to choose?

for just learning linux, i would recommend erase disk and install. answer a few question as install starts, wait a few minutes, reboot, and poof, all done. i am far from a linux guru user but i get by very well, mostly, and that's how i've always installed linux. haven't ever created separate home o...

[solved] question about 32bit os installed on 64bit machine

this is some what in regards to my slow shut down topic here, https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=306977 which is marked as solved. shouldn't a 32bit mint install run satisfactorily on a 64bit machine? some how or another i had always assumed the machine in question at above link was 3...

2GB ram
80gb Harddrive.
old machine, never upgraded.
have a couple machines here that were the same specs as your machine. both ran mint xfce very well actually. have upgraded them both to have ssd's and run even better now. heck, a 120gb ssd is only like $22 at crucial.com

Re: installing a program upgrade

if you require firefox to update faster than mint puts it out, do this: Quicker updates for Firefox 9. Updates for your web browser Firefox come from Mint's own repository, not straight from the Ubuntu sources. In some cases, this might mean a delay of several days before you get the latest Firefox....

Re: How to use Kodi in Linux Mint 19.2

I installed from software manager and ppa. Both the same. After briefly looking it over, I wonder why I would want it. VLC seems so much more robust. VLC definitely is easier to use and has volume normalization and dynamic range compression (which is important to me) but I haven't found any skins t...

if i'm reading that right, you say mint takes 62 seconds to boot up with an i3 cpu? wow! my old toshiba satellite with intel single core cpu didn't take that long with the old hdd installed in it. recently installed a ssd and now it's even faster at booting up. might take about 25 seconds to start. ...

If I recall correctly, Intel Core2 Duo is 32-bit only. With a mere 2 GB RAM you're better off with 32-bit anyway. And whatever you do: disable all visual effects in your Cinnamon, because they're much too heavy for that ancient rig: https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.com/p/speed-mint.html#ID5.1 ...

you could always just install the non free unrar and then use a gui to unzip files also. works on everything i've used it on. will never figure out why anyone would want to have to type out all that just to do something so simple? yes, i guess i'm stuck in windows mode frame of mind!!
