opera and firefox both have free vpn's. opera's is built right in to the browser. not positive about how the firefox one works, but it is free, i do believe.

i'm not a gamer myself, but have tried helping a few other people with issues on it. keeping a copy of windows is always much easier.

i install all updates as soon as they are in the update manager and have never had an issue. personally see no sense to blocking any updates. i do have timeshift setup and have only used it once and that was just to see how it worked.
