Re: Ideal Total Disk Backup?

Well the reviews in the DM make it clear it's a nightmare to learn and use, to the point I tried to avoid it. Just tried downloading it, but after seeing the website and the wealth of instructions... well it was just making me feel tired and I deleted it again! I'll take another look later. At prese...

Re: Ideal Total Disk Backup?

Regarding using Macrium Reflect, I just tried that... Didn't seem to work at all? I could get my laptop to boot using the CD, with a mini version of Widows on it, but it offered 3 choices: HDD CD Network It seemed entirely unable to see the 1TB USB drive that Aptik saved to? I'm not even sure if it ...

Re: Ideal Total Disk Backup?

I seem to have it installed and running, but there doesn't seem to be any form of "Go" button? The "user manual" just gives a page or two of terminal commands, so this has to be run from the terminal? OK... that sux but OK... I think it's running... yep. however it seems it's not backing everything ...

Ideal Total Disk Backup?

So my laptop is running Mint 18.3 Cin' OK, I think, but I'd like to configure some happy form of backing-up. I know a lot of people say you should just back up your data files, but I really dislike that. I've had a lot of problems over the years with PCs dying*, and I find by far the biggest pain in...

Re: What are the aims of Linux Mint?

Not sure why so many users here on the forums think that's the whole goal of most Linux devs There does indeed seem to be a disconnect between what the users (inc me, hence this thread) think the developers want and what the developers do actually want. I guess some of it comes down to our reasons ...

Re: What are the aims of Linux Mint?

Earlier I mentioned how it's known in sales that you can't always believe what people say; instead you have to see what they actually do? 1777 posts in the sub-forum about promoting Linux Mint to new users tells me something interesting... That while the core attitude may be "We do this because we c...

Re: What are the aims of Linux Mint?

I don't know much at all about Linux or the mindset of the developers, which is why I asked (while fully aware of the #1 rule in both sales and UX, that you need to watch what people do, not what they say). When I talk of market share I certainly don't mean in terms of challenging either of those gi...

Balsamiq Alternative - Pencil Project? SOLVED

For wireframes and mockups I use Balsamiq on Windows. The closest I can find for Linux is "Pencil Project" here: http://pencil.evolus.vn/Downloads.html I don't see that in the Software Manager thingy. Does that mean it doesn't work with Mint or can I just download the Ubuntu 64 version and side-load...

Re: What are the aims of Linux Mint?

whether anything I do impacts anyone's market share has never crossed my mind and thus plays no part in my decisions
Well if you're one of the coders and that's how you feel then that answers my question.

Peace.

Re: What are the aims of Linux Mint?

better is always the goal Not for commerical software. For example Adobe CS and Office are now subscription-based, obviously better for the company, much worse for the end-user, who pays vastly more over the years and is alway at the mercy of the company dumping the product, jacking up fees or chan...

What are the aims of Linux Mint?

On the 'About' we have the following "The purpose of Linux Mint is to produce a modern, elegant and comfortable operating system which is both powerful and easy to use. Linux Mint is one of the most popular desktop Linux distributions and used by millions of people. Some of the reasons for the succe...

Re: Mint 19 Opinions and Reviews

Speaking as a complete noob, here's the YUGE problem with 19... Noobs like me, coming from the Windows World (WW) think that "very latest update" means "all bugs n stuff FIXED! As best we know, anyway." However it seems in the world of Linux (WoL) "very latest update" means "Doesn't really work yet ...

Re: Use of Linux Mint Camera.app

Quick point - NOT all USB cables are capable of transferring data. Some are purely for charging, and there's no real way of telling the difference. I just tried on my new install of 18.3 and at first it didn't do anything at all. Then I remembered the cable thing, found a different cable I already m...

That works, and apparently already installed :) Will see if there's some way to make it autoplay discs inserted. The machine doesn't seem to be able to find my bluetooth speaker, though it shows the bluetooth as on and searching. My phone can find it OK. Well past midnight here, can fiddle with it t...

Re: New 240 GB SSD "0.0 bytes available" during install? SOLVED

Thanks Michael. I tried changing to the GPT thing and this laptop didn't recognize it as a bootable drive, so seems to need the MBR thing. Installing the earlier version, 18.3 Sylvia worked first time, without any drama, no low disk errors or other issues. All hardware seems to work OK, have WiFi, s...
