Re: Okay explain this update please

Just another random thought.
You may still want to open stuff saved in a windows format.
People tend to send stuff that way, if you want to read it you need that sort of stuff. Although some of those formats look a bit unlikely

Re: How to remove Linux Mint 19.1

Just reinstall over the top, you don't need to delete first. But if you post the problems here first, you may get them sorted and not need to reinstall. Give the details of the computer and what version of 19.1 you have. Open a terminal and paste this into it. inxi -Fxz then copy the results, paste ...

Okay, I did figure it out, but haven't installed it. Frankly it scares the crap out of me.
What happens after I install it? Can anything bad happen?
I think if it's in the standard repos, you can have a high degree of faith in it

What even if the keyboard isn't working?

If you have no mouse and no keyboard, what do you have beside the reset button?

Re: How to repair formatted home directory

I thought timeshift saved several versions, depending on how you set it. I figured going back to the earliest one would have a better chance than the latest.

Re: FireFox for Mint?

In the past a firefox update always asked for it to be rebooted, if you didn't, strange things would start happening. Possibly because some bits were new and some old. But everything always came good after firefox was restarted.

Re: How to repair formatted home directory

Do you have an earlier version in time shift? I thought that was the reason for having it, to get you back to a system that works.

Re: How to repair formatted home directory

Just a wild guess here. But is it possible to create a new partition and label it "home" then do an auto mount in /etc/fstab?

Re: Nooblet needs help dual boot on two drives LM 19

Somebody will answer you with the exact details. You shouldn't need to reinstall.

So don't worry, you can use Gparted in the install medium to sort your "filesystem"

If you do,

Code: Select all

sudo fdisk -l
and

Code: Select all

blkid
then copy and paste the results here, that will help give you an exact answer.

Sorry this old brain quickly forgets details. But I did some partition editing recently and had to disable swap before anything happened.

Re: Dual boot install offers GRUB options (6). Which should I choose?

Yes, that sounds right. The mint installation was seeing peppermint grub already there. "Keep local version", probably didn't install a mint grub at all. I guess what needed to happen was a grub update from within peppermint so it could find the new mint installation and add it to the boot menu. Unf...

Re: Dual boot install offers GRUB options (6). Which should I choose?

I seem to be good at wild guessing so I'll have another go here. Can I assume, that it's only the version of grub you had to select??? In other words, has everything been installed OK except grub? If that's the case you may be able to save the situation by reinstalling grub from the live usb stick. ...

Re: Wine or Virtual OS

I've done that in the past when hard drives were small, but with a big harddrive there's no need. Small solid state drives could be a different matter, I'm dual booting with a 128gb drive, and it's very cramped, not much room left for data. It's a long time since I've done it so I'm not sure of this...

Re: Wine or Virtual OS

I've got all my windows programs working in wine, including a couple of Locosys GPS programs. It took me a while to realise how easy it is to link linux usb ports to wine com ports. Ulink also works and I can program my ublox chips. My ancient FTW maker program works much better in wine than it does...

Is there a danger of loosing data when moving partitions?
Does Gparted shift data along with the partition or does it overwrite it?

Re: Strange problem with Wifi and Bluetooth

OK so it may be temperature, how are the vents? Giving everything a good clean, could help it run cooler.

The best help for solving intermittents is logs, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to know if there are any to show why wifi is shutting down.
Any clues gurus?

Re: Strange problem with Wifi and Bluetooth

intermittences are the hardest faults to fix!!!! Just a crazy random thought, does battery state affect what's happening? It's got to be a hardware problem of some sort, so could be voltage or temperature related. Maybe CPU load could affect both temp and voltage, just plucking at straws here, but i...
