Re: Just need a bit more help please :)

Just personal preference here, if it was me, I'd leave windows alone and dual boot. You may not use windows very often, in lots of cases there are other alternatives. But just once in a while, things come up that you need windows for. I've disconnected my windows 7 os from the internet, to make it m...

Re: Installed 20 from 18 my old home folder is not /home

Sorry I can't tell you exactly what to do, but it seems you have a misunderstanding of the normal file system setup. A default 20 install will just have / mounted in fstab. swap will be a swap file, and appear as /swap, home will be /home. if you want a separate home in fstab, it needs to be on it's ...

Re: What is the easiest way to install mint on a win10 box?

I'm fairly sure my mint 20 usb stick has a legacy and a UEFI boot option. But then I'm easily confused these days

Re: troubleshooting USB devices

Default OS booted OK, just couldn't select anything else from the grub menu.
Just have an old PS2 keyboard on hand in case you get it wrong.

Re: troubleshooting USB devices

Sorry not quite as I thought, last time I played with that setting I lost my usb keyboard during POST, had to borrow a mate's ps2 keyboard to fix it. So I haven't tried altering anything.

Re: troubleshooting USB devices

I've no idea if this helps, but I have a similar problem with a new uefi install. I also have an older 19.3 version, installed in legacy mode, with windows 7 in virtual box, windows has full access to usb devices. My new uefi 20 doesn't, as yours, lsusb shows all usb devices, but none show up in vir...

Re: PC won't shutdown - LM20 Cinnamon

I had a similar problem, nothing would shut the computer down. In my case it was a portable usb HDD, that was having trouble with bios settings. I guess it's a slim chance that you have a usb drive plugged in, but if you have try removing it.

This isn't necessarily a good description, many of us here haven't used windows for ages, we'd have no idea how things work in windows.

Re: SOLVED how long should the first time shift snap shot take?

So bought a brand new 2Tb drive and had the same results, couldn't reformat it and it wouldn't power down. So tried in the laptop and it worked fine. Laptop is a legacy 19.3 installation, this PC is a new ufi 20 installation, and the first time I've tried ufi. So had a look in bios, and sure enough ...

Re: Solved sort of. lost grub menu after replacing motherboard

returning bios to ufi has improved matters considerably, even some old mint OSs on the HDD will boot now, but I've lost W7, no matter it works OK in VB

Re: SOLVED how long should the first time shift snap shot take?

Guys, thanks for your suggestions, but I've used this drive since 18.2 it's worked great up until now. I can't do anything with it in mint, as soon as it mounts it won't unmount, file system check crashes, as does file repair, I also can't reformat it as it won't unmount. Next trick is to try window...

Re: how long should the first time shift snap shot take?

The first one's always seem to take the longest, as you might expect, as it has all that initial stuff to back up. I've also seen the est. time go to 15-20+ hours very early in the process and hang certain points but it has never taken anywhere near that long to complete, maybe an hour, hour & half...

Doesn't want to reformat either, so I've started a timeshift partition on the 1tb HDD. That finished in a few minutes.

Re: how long should the first time shift snap shot take?

No choice I'm afraid, disks couldn't power it down and wouldn't turn off until I unplugged it. Doing a file system check now. That just crashed, so trying a repair, if that doesn't work, I'll have to reformat

SOLVED how long should the first time shift snap shot take?

I've just installed mate 20, and started timeshift, but it's now reporting it will take 15 hrs to finish and climbing, it's reached 12042 files and stopped at that. I think I'll hit cancel

Re: lost grub menu after replacing motherboard

Ok, I've installed a ufi version of mate 20 on the ssd, and this now works OK, well at least I've got the grub menu back. But it's running rough, maybe because bios is still set to legacy mode. I'll play around and see if I can improve it, but if the troubles persist I'll start another topic, and ca...
