I think most of us here prefer a clean install rather than upgrade.
16gb seems awfully small, if you have the room 30gb is better.

Glad it's fixed.

I just turned on the computer and network manager said wifi was connected, but the indicator was circling and firefox had no connection. So I opened the ...

Re: Desktop
In Mate "Preferences", there's "Displays" click on that and you get "monitor Preferences" There you can adjust for the size of your monitor. With any luck that will get the window fitting your monitor, and all your icons will come back

I get that for google-earth and just ignore it, without apparent detriment.

Re: LM 21.3 boot on Windows 11
I think it depends on the computer, you need to get into the bios before windows boots. A quick search on goggle says this The key or keys may differ depending on your computer, but some of the most common ones are F1, F2, F10, F12, Del, or Esc. You may also see a message on the screen that tells yo...

Re: Having problems updating to version 20
sorry mate you must be doing something wrong. Time shift is best used on an external drive. It's not for backing up data. You should only really need to do a new snapshot just before you change the system. There's a good guide to installing mate here somewhere, don't go looking for utubes. 1st thing...

Are you running more than 1 OS? I had a similar problem once when I edited the wrong grub menu. The one launching the OS is not necessarily in that OS. It's normally in the last OS installed.

Re: changing root user pwd?
there maybe other responses, but as far as I'm aware mint doesn't have a root password set, so there's no need to change it.
Logging in as root, should only be for very experienced experts, like server maintainers.
If you need to ask how to do it, you probably shouldn't

And set up time shift. That's what it's there for, to revert to the system as it was, before the updates crashed it. In fact, if a friend installed it, it may already be set up. Can you contact your friend to find out? It's possible your friend had to use a newer kernel to get the correct wifi drive...

yes if keyboard doesn't work in bios, it's almost certainly the keyboard.
Unless it's an external battery powered keyboard and the battery is on it's last legs.
