External HDD has become slow
I've got two 4TB external HDD's (WD My Passports), both formatted as ext4, both are nearly full, both just under 1TB remaining, one of them has become really slow lately when writing to it - it usually starts off OK but quickly becomes slow again. It seems OK reading from it though. I've checked sma...

Re: Nordvpn has stopped working
downgraded nordvpn from 3.15 to 3.14.2 and issue was resolved. you can see the package history by using $ apt policy nordvpn this will show you the last couple versions and you can roll it back to the most recent one to downgrade a package using apt is pretty simple, for example $ sudo apt install ...

Nordvpn has stopped working
I've had nordvpn installed for years but it's suddenly stopped working. Whatever command I enter - nordvpn login, nordvpn connect, nordvpn status, anything, I get the error: Whoops! /run/nordvpn/nordvpnd.sock not found . I've tried removing it with apt purge and reinstalling, it doesn't make a diffe...

Find/delete files in a folder, that don't have corresponding files in the parent folder
Some time ago I made a photo gallery app in PHP / MySQL which I run on localhost. It accesses my pictures folder, and in whatever sub-folder I'm browsing, it creates thumbnails on the fly in a sub-folder called .thumbs, with the same filename as the original. Along the way, I've deleted / moved a nu...

Re: External HDD hangs on first write
I tried it again today, opened up htop and dmesg before copying a load of files to the HDD. It hung for a minute again, nothing caught my eye in htop or dmesg, no spikes in CPU activity or anything. There is disk activity while it's hanging, so it is doing *something* but I can't figure out what! It...

External HDD hangs on first write
For quite a while I've had a small but irritating problem with my external HDD, which I transfer photos onto in bulk. On the first transfer to it after booting up and connecting it, it will hang for a minute, maybe up to 90 seconds - it might transfer a few files before it does this, or it might do ...

Curious - battery life has doubled!
Currently running Mint 19.3 Cinnamon on a 1-year-old Lenovo Y540 laptop, 17" screen I installed Mint on the laptop almost straight away. Battery life has never been exceptional, I didn't really expect it with a 17 inch screen, but it's no problem having it plugged in because I never travel with...

Re: External HDD and CD drive won't play together
Of course - never even thought of power. So used to having several lightweight things like pen drives plugged into the hub, but of course two mechanical drives will want more power. Will see if I can find a spare lead to power it or just do one mechanical drive at a time.

[SOLVED] External HDD and CD drive won't play together
Currently on Mint 19.3 Cinnamon edition, on a Lenovo Y540 laptop. A few weeks ago I had my external HDD (WD Passport) connected to my laptop via a USB hub (a UGreen 4-port USB3 hub). All was working OK, until I connected my CD drive (an internal drive off an old laptop, converted to external one wit...

Re: fstab and LUKS partitions
Partly solved with some duckduckgo'ing - turns out crypttab needs nofail too, as the fourth parameter: wd_passport UUID="6de7e341-7300-4049-8476-0b00f98c29ec" none nofail The none indicates there's no password file - instead it asks for the password during bootup if it's connected. BUT - i...

Re: fstab and LUKS partitions
Bump
Anyone?
At the moment my laptop freezes during boot, until I connect the external HDD. Not what I want - I'd like the system to boot without it if it's not there, and automatically mount it when it's connected.

fstab and LUKS partitions
I've formatted an external HDD as ext4 LUKS, and I'd like it to mount at /wd_passport. I created /etc/crypttab with the below line: wd_passport UUID="6de7e341-7300-4049-8476-0b00f98c29ec" ...and added the below to /etc/fstab : /dev/mapper/wd_passport /wd_passport defaults,nofail 0 0 This w...

Re: Sounds that SOOTH me...
I thought I enjoyed the sound of silence, until one night a couple of years ago I went and camped up in the mountains. It was a quiet place, the spot I picked for my tent was sheltered from the breeze, and once I was inside, it was even quieter. Once I turned my torch off to go to sleep, the dead si...

Re: "In the old days we...."
I remember the computers back when I was at school, I can't remember what generation of CPU it was at the time, but the cases had an LED display on the front boasting its dizzying 66MHz speed ... as long as the Turbo button was in, otherwise it dropped to 33MHz. The thought of 66MHz being "turb...

Re: Upgrading to Mint 20, and Timeshift
I was figuring on putting a comment on the last snapshot before upgrading to Mint 20 so I'd know restoring anything before that would put me back to 19.3. Just wondering if there's too much changed in the system for snapshots to continue across the upgrade?

Re: A disgruntled windows user ranting on overly complicated Linux
Meh, no-one's making you use it. If you don't like it, don't use it. I've never had to use the terminal in the 2 years I've used Mint, but as I've learned the system I've found it quicker to do some things that way. There's nothing forcing me to use an arcane command line. And certainly for giving h...

Upgrading to Mint 20, and Timeshift
Currently I've got Mint 19.3 installed on my SSD, and a dedicated partiton on the HDD for Timeshift snapshots. I'm planning on wiping the SSD partiton clean to install 20. Can I set up the new Timeshift to carry on from 19.3's snapshots, or would I be best wiping the Timeshift partition too? And if ...

Re: how do you install programs
Easiest way to install anything is to search in the Software Manager first & install from there if it's available.
If not - is there a .deb file in what you downloaded? If so double click that & it will install.
