Re: [SOLVED] How to change lightdm to mdm in MINT 19

Just an update-Xubuntu 18.04 it now blocks the install somehow. It still will install but it won't work and causes error messages. If Xubuntu is blocking this, that just wrong in my book. At least, I have it installed on my main computer before Xubuntu may have blocked it. I just removed it & went b...

Re: [ABANDONED] Linux bricked my PC

I was just trying to help. I ran into some of the same issues on may laptop. That why I have windows 10 32 bit & Linux mint 18.3 64 bit on the laptop. Even though the OP left. I heard certain versions of Puppy Linux version has a way to restore the windows mbr. I have no idea if it would work. I don...

Re: Linux bricked my PC

To get your Windows back, your best bet is really to use Windows-based repair utilities; Linux-based repair utilities are best for Linux filesystem problems. If you can get access to a working Windows PC, you will need to create Boot Media using a working PC -- as there is no way to repair this on ...

Re: Linux bricked my PC

The information provided here is somewhat confusing for not saying contradictory. First: Ok so I wanted more space on my Windows partition but, then when I deleted the Linux partition then the boot loader (grub2) didn't work anymore So I need help Oh and I can't reinstall Linux And later: Do you ac...

Re: Mint 19 Opinions and Reviews

I know this on an old thread. If you have a dell computer, unfortunately I would recommend to keep using Linux Mint 18.3 or install xubuntu 18.04 LTS. I am just basing that on my experience.

Re: Firefox Virus

I got a malware virus in Opera. Wikipedia links were changing. It started to re-direct to bad sites. So, I reinstalled from a backup that didn't have 19.1 . It would almost certainly have been enough to simply delete the Opera profile in your user account. This is just my opinion, Not necessarily. ...

Re: Thunderbird missing from Synaptic Packet Manager

Actually, it sounds like the sources.list is missing or corrupted. The Op will probably want to restore the sources.list manually to avoid deleting 3rd party PPA (Like Google, chrome, wine and etc). The Op just needs to download the sources.list for the version the OP is using and put it in /etc/apt...

Re: Firefox Virus

Not to nick pick, see when does a game cause malware if is from Ubuntu or Linux Mint PPA or even other there suppose to be checked out. That what linux was designed for to help people not get malware or viruses. Yes, I know it technically possible to get a virus in Linux. This is just theory so don'...

Re: Firefox Virus

Evening. Been using mint for a few years now, great so far. I tried downloading a couple games the other day and ever since I've had q_search jumping in on my Firefox. I search through the address bar, which is set for yahoo and it jumps to an address which is oll3.xyz I've installed ClamAv and Cla...

Re: What are the differences between Linux Xfce 19.x LTS and Xubuntu 18.04 LTS?

I have decided which to keep. I will still hang around because I still have 18.3 linux mint on my other computer and some tips will still work for Xubuntu 18.04 LTS Don't get me wrong. I like Linux Xfce 19.x LTS but my computer doesn't. However, this would be a subject for a new thread. I still may ...

Re: What are the differences between Linux Xfce 19.x LTS and Xubuntu 18.04 LTS?

altair4 ubuntu-support-status does not work in Linux Mint 19.1 Yes, I installed and then I removed it. Since, it didn't work. I also used autoremove as well. His point wasn't that you should run it, but that the 3 years of support are only about the community maintained parts, notably the desktop i...

Re: What are the differences between Linux Xfce 19.x LTS and Xubuntu 18.04 LTS?

It depends on what you mean by support and what is being supported. The part of Xubuntu that is made up of Ubuntu "core" for want of a better name is "supported" beyond 3 years: altair@xub1804:~$ ubuntu-support-status Support status summary of 'xub1804': You have 1553 packages (81.6%) supported unt...

Re: What are the differences between Linux Xfce 19.x LTS and Xubuntu 18.04 LTS?

With respect to Linux Mint 19 xfce and Xubuntu 18.04: To me they almost seem the same. It is hard trying to decide which one to keep. This is why I keep them both. :D That what I decided to do. I just got Linux Mint 19.1 installed and configured on one of my computers. Now, I will have triple boot ...

Re: What are the differences between Linux Xfce 19.x LTS and Xubuntu 18.04 LTS?

This thread is to not to debate the differences or to say which is best each person can decided that on their own. With that said I would still like to know what are the differences between Linux Xfce 19.x LTS and Xubuntu 18.04 LTS? Presumably you mean Linux Mint 19.x. They are very similar but the...

Re: Hard drive or browser problem? or something else

Make sure you don't have a cd/dvd in your drive unless you are using it. The posters above were correct but this can also cause clicking noise. It still wouldn't hurt to backup your software like the others said. I am just providing a possible alternatives that it could be.

Re: [solved] gksu (gksudo) issues plus other comments

At first people has issues with github but it is gaining better support. I have used github few times. I also installed grub-customizer, palemoon, seamonkey all from a 3rd party PPA. Even Google Chrome and Opera Browser use PPA. I now even use wineHQ PPA. I personally think ppas should be ok to inst...

Re: [solved] gksu (gksudo) issues plus other comments

LuvNix & others. There is fix for the MDM themes here that doesn't use gksu in 19.x https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=274884 I also made a tip to getting it working in Xubuntu 18.04 as well without gksu installed. Edit to add this: Create a blank file tittled .bash_aliases in /home/u...

Re: [SOLVED] How to change lightdm to mdm in MINT 19

I know this is a little bit off topic, for those wanting mdm on Xubuntu 18.04 I thought I would provide info on this here since it referrers to instructions provided by smurphos. Instructions are a little different to work on Xubuntu 18.04 this is how I got it done. Make sure synaptic is installed. ...

Re: [solved] gksu (gksudo) issues plus other comments

I am not trying to be rude. I am just trying to understand. I obviously misunderstanding redlined & zcot posting. I am totally confused. LuvNix it is not a drama, I am just trying to understand their running as root example if gksu is installed. Like I said, I am totally confused. However, if firewa...
