How to rename several files in different locations

Hi guys&gals, I need to rename several files in different locations, for example /folder1/Test -> /folder1/Test.txt , /folder2/Test -> /folder2/Test.txt and so on, that is the names are standard but the folders are not. The files to be renamed can be easily found using my favourite bash command FIND...

How to permanently turn off wifi from other users than admin

Hi everybody, I need to permanently turn off wi-fi from other users than admin. Our company policy dictates that the computers used for data analysis should not have access to internet; however, from time to time, I need to update them (using the admin account). So the obvious solution would be to h...

SOLVED: printf failing when piped by find

I have a bunch of .txt -files, which I want to add two lines to the end: --------------- "Parameter source:" For some reason, my trusted friend find fails me with this: find . -name "TestParameters.txt" -exec printf %"s\n" --------------- "Parameter source:" >> {} \; I have tested this in parts - fi...

Re: Black screen while installing Linux Mint on Laptop

HPs aren't a difficult as the rumor mill would have you believe. It's just that the steps needed often aren't obvious. Let's start by finding out what form of UEFI your machine uses. Boot Win10, open Run (right-click Start) and run msinfo32. BIOS version [sic] should be line eleven. msinfo32 - BIOS...

Black screen while installing Linux Mint on Laptop

I am trying to install Linux Mint on my HP ProBook Laptop. I bought an extra SSD drive for it and made a USB stick for installation with Mint 18. After disabling Windows10 bootmanager from the BIOS (Windows being so jealous that it doesn't consider other options when it's bootloader is used), I boot...

Re: LAN working on Windows computer but not Linux Mint

Surely I have been playing with ufw, but disabled it before starting this endeavour.

Code: Select all

sudo ufw status
Status: inactive

Re: LAN working on Windows computer but not Linux Mint

Screenshot from 2019-09-20 14-37-07.png Strangely, ifconfig gives the address 169.254.69.196 for the LAN card, whereas the Networking GUI tool (or whatever it's called) says !Pv4 address 192.168.200.7 (see attached screenshot). Check that Automatic DHCP is set to both IPv4 and IPv6 in LAN connectio...

Re: LAN working on Windows computer but not Linux Mint

The rooter is provided by our company's internet provider; i have neither physical access to it, nor can I configure it. It is supposed to be super cool though. is this actually a valid router address for you? Code: Select all inet addr:169.254.69.196 This is funny, because when connecting with the ...

Re: LAN working on Windows computer but not Linux Mint

Yes, clicking on the LAN icon on the desktop and turning the wlan switch off (while having the LAN switch on)
brings about the problem - no internet.

LAN working on Windows computer but not Linux Mint

Hi, I can't get my Linux Mint to connect to the internet via the LAN cable (WLAN is working fine), whereas my other Windows 10-computer connects through the same socket without any problems. I've also tried having the two connected via a switch - pinging WIN-Linux works fine but not the other direct...

Re: UFW: Blocking all internet but allowing Google

Sorry guys, need more help. Despite ~100 attempts, can't get this right. sudo ufw deny out to any sudo ufw allow in from 172.217.0.0/16 sudo ufw allow out to 172.217.0.0/16 seems to just block all the internet and doesn't allow me to access Google drive (which is the point of allowing Google). What ...

Re: UFW: Blocking all internet but allowing Google

Thanks for the reply kc1di, however, I am familiar with the basic functionality of UFW; what I couldn't find even after scanning through numerous UFW guides is HOW TO BLOCK OR ALLOW A BIG RANGE OF IP ADDRESSES, in my case, allow all the range Google is using, 172.217.0.0 - 172.217.255.255, i.e. 172....

UFW: Blocking all internet but allowing Google

Hello everybody, I am learning to use UFW. I need to setup a firewall that does the following: 1) Allows files being sent via a LAN cable 2) Allows WLAN connection to gmail and other Google services 3) Blocks everything else The number 1 seems to be easy (just "sudo ufw allow ssh"); number 3 can als...

Re: What is /root/Downloads

Thank you gargotron, decided to go with it and deleted the "Downloads" using
sudo rm -r /root/Downloads/
Freed about 10G and no damage seems to have occurred.

BTW, MathWorks is the company which produces MatLab.

What is /root/Downloads

Hi everybody, my experience with Linux is mostly finding instructions online and following them. Now I have to clean up some space in my /, which is size of 30 GB. I am using Linux Mint, uname -v tells me that my kernel version is SMP Debian 3.16.59-1 (2018-10-03). I found the following mysterious c...
