Re: Does Anyone Know Why My UFW Keeps Turning Itself Off?

Not really, quit messing with those gooey firewalls a long time ago too. Can't even remember what they're called. Still can't get what's going on with ufw there. Does your Mint OS have rsyslog installed? Its a recommend of ufw. I don't use Mint but rsyslog is installed on this OS. Just a long shot t...

Re: Does Anyone Know Why My UFW Keeps Turning Itself Off?

^Yep reboots, android autocorrect. OP then don't know what else to suggest. Just installed it/ufw went through similar and it's working fine now and was same situation 8/9yrs ago when dorking with ufw. Good luck though.

Plus there are other gnu/nix firewalls. If ufw keeps being a pain

Re: Does Anyone Know Why My UFW Keeps Turning Itself Off?

Mentioned recall it being logging. Never bothered figuring out where ufw even logs to. Though went ahead and turned it back on "sudo ufw logging low" and its still staying active on reboots now.

Re: Does Anyone Know Why My UFW Keeps Turning Itself Off?

Been a long time since bothered messing with ufw but remember seeing this same weird behavior had to go ahead and install it just to be sure, it's staying active now. One of 3 things, make sure you've enabled it with both "sudo ufw enable" and "sudo systemctl enable ufw" try reboot and check if it s...

Re: Which browser is recommended?

Lower as opposed to others using more and no, in my experience Firefox still uses less system memory VS others. Partly because someone still has so much access and control over configuration. Not like the good ole days, definitely gotten much heavier but I still never see the ridiculous stats many r...

Re: Which browser is recommended?

Personally have always chosen Firefox, configurability, lower memory overhead etc but you can install however many you want and try them to see which you prefer.

Re: Dell laptop gets extremely slow when it starts using disk swapfile

+1 the people suggesting lowering swappiness to 10. Have always done so, never seen an issue and consider it an essential tweak. Agree your swap is oversized though with diskspace being so plentiful now, over all harmless. Just amounts to some wasted drive space. Your culprit is almost certainly goi...

Re: Best Distro For Old Computers

^ Lol, yeah agree that's another tactic I believe/know they use to get people to spend more money. Also that was my general feeling about Dell, that they may have gone downhill in quality VS olden days(though unconfirmed as I'm lacking recent experience and haven't bothered researching.) I mean it's...

Re: Reasons against Timeshift for backing up home directory

+2 all41 and rsync, it's my go to for system backup/restore. Not that there no doubt aren't plenty of other great utilities and methods in gnu/nix. 2 cents on system restore in windows, never liked it and seen it fail to resolve issues many times, thus the not liking it thing. Anyway I prefer rsync,...

Re: Best Distro For Old Computers

Or buy a 4gb chip, assuming the motherboard is capable of it. Have actually always had good experiences with Dell systems, don't know about nowadays but Dell has always been a good brand for me. Bought this 10-going on 11yr old Dell inspiron 1545 laptop from a guy off of Craigslist for $90 bucks, ve...

Re: same home folder on a dual boot, good idea or not?

Agree with gm10, symlink to a shared partition. Have never bothered exploring sharing a /home partition, just tend to use a shared/automounted data partition between installs but remember findings on it and advice from other nixers was use symlinks if we're going to do it.

Re: Linux Mint Slow on my Core 2 Duo 2 GB RAM System

Always something new to learn with gnu/Linux. Plus if you're like me, relearn, cause can forget stuff nowadays too. Google stuff like "make Ubuntu use less memory" etc etc. Same for Linux Mint and Debian, as info about one will apply to the others, not always but in general. This prompted another (o...

Re: Linux Mint Slow on my Core 2 Duo 2 GB RAM System

My 2 cents on this, yeap go with 32bit just for the memory savings. Look into upgrading that systems RAM to say 4gbs. Guessing that's the majority of your issue, having such limited RAM. Also ideally you don't want your OS even using swap, that's going to bog it down too. The solution is to edit the...

Re: Best Distro For Old Computers

Light weight distributions intended for low spec hardware, though can also run great on modern stuff too. Bunsenlabs gnu/Linux, MX gnu/Linux(never tried it), AntiX gnu/Linux. You can also visit distrowatch and search for actively developed gnu/Linux distro's specifically meant for older hardware. Th...

Re: Problem installing Linux Mint 19

Just posting to +1 the person who advised pre-partitioning before install, gparted live etc. Could help the installer recognize usable space on a problem system.
