Re: Random name.png.part files posted to desktop
Hi Spamegg - thanks for the suggestion - my Firefox downloads to home/downloads rather than /home/desktop. But I also have other browsers that I will look into. Just assured that nothing nefarious is going on and that it's just an annoyance. So thanks again for speedy reply.

Random name.png.part files posted to desktop
Hi, Using Linux Mint 21 I keep getting random named files posted onto the Desktop e.g. KZAPqYtd.png.part Archive. These files have "unknown file type" - "no known programs associated with it" - so I cannot begin to see where they are coming from or what produces them. There seems...

Cinnamon Menu Command - Change directory [SOLVED]
Normal installation of DIY Layout Creator (https://diy-fever.com/software/diylc/) - a drawing package for electronics places all the necessary components in my home folder. This created no problems in running it from there. To tidy things up and to ensure that new files named the same as DIYLC's run...

Re: Repetier-Host, Use appimage or tgz download
On the same subject line - there seems no way to save slic3r configurations when using the appimage version of Repetier Host - something that is possible in the Linux Mint 21.3 software repository version. This seems to be due to the Appimage being a wholly self-contained package. Currently I have t...

Re: Double Move OS to New Hardware
Thanks RickNS - I have purposely chosen Nvidia again as my graphics card supplier, and have moved back to the open-source "nouveau" driver in order to avoid any possible proprietary problems with the Nvidia driver. All your other statements make a lot of sense - I'm reassured.

In trying to get openFoam to work, I have both installed and deleted various openFoam packages. Now when I open the Terminator I have this line at the start: bash: /usr/lib/openfoam/openfoam2206/etc/bashrc: no such file or directory which is quite true. How do I get rid of this line - no real proble...

Re: Setting tablet to use only one screen instead of both
For some reason the xsetwacom MapToOutput didn't work. My required Output screen is: DVI-I-2 connected primary 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 477mm x 268mm and xsetwacom --list devices produces for the stylus: HUION PenTablet stylus id: 14 type: STYLUS So I expected : xsetw...

Re: mlocate is now 60 Gb - is it really necessary?
Thanks to rene and t42. The purge command seems to also get rid of mlocate.db as well as the individual temporary files. After reboot there is no mlocate folder in /var/lib anymore. Of course I don't know when the mlocate.db gets created. And the man 5 update.db.conf command says there is "No m...

Re: mlocate is now 60 Gb - is it really necessary?
Thanks ajgreeny - yes I thought it a bit strange for versions of mlocate.db to be retained over the past year on what seems to be a random basis - sometimes each day - then again 4 or 5 days, then a week. I have not knowingly done anything for this to happen - my investigation of disk usage threw up...

mlocate is now 60 Gb - is it really necessary? [SOLVED]
My Linux Mint 20.3 OS SSD is now just 10 Gb short of it's 120 Gb capacity. Of that var is 80 Gb and the largest part of lib in var that is mlocate at 60 Gb. From other threads I see that this is a database of files used in the locate function of Nemo. I rarely use either the find or locate functions...

Inateck USB 3.2 card freezes PC before boot
Replacing my current 4-port Inateck USB 3.0 extension card with an Inateck Redcomets U25 USB 3.2 card (the one with 3 USB Type-A and 2 USB Type C connectors) caused my PC running Linux Mint 20.3 to freeze after the BIOS boot menu. Completely blank screens with just a single white "dash" in...

Just to add - After reading again vimes666's reply - I get it about the application that you are in. I tried barcode scanning in Kwrite - and it all works perfectly - just adds a CR.

Re: Barcode Scanner works but returns command not found
Thanks vimes666. The barcode reader was 2nd hand on eBay - wasn't sure it would work with Linux - so wasn't prepared to spend a lot - and it didn't come with a manual. Will look for that online. Guess that answers my question - so thanks again.

Barcode Scanner works but returns command not found [Solved]

Re: Required Router Information
Hi rene, - the figures I quoted were from an internet speed test site and were bits. But my internet usage is not heavy video or gaming - just normal browsing, email, etc. Virgin Media keep telling me to update my speed (at my expense of course) - but I don't need it. Hence my preference for picking...

Thanks rene. Always a a little apprehensive about doing anything that might stop internet access - you are then limited to phoning and open to the wrath of family who also can't use the internet. I've got good linespeed as I have fibre right into the house - foresight by Comtel back in the 1990's (w...
