Re: Windows 10 new install - Are all versions of Windows 10 so intrusive?

Not actually sure what the term "Microsoft fanboy crap" means (fanboy) as we are definitely not fans of Microsoft so the statement seems contradictory. A "fan of" - meaning supporting and in favour of. https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Microsoft%20Fanboy So going to the link and "Micr...

Re: [SOLVED] Dualbooting Mint, the installer shows no partitions available

Cat amongst the pigeons.... I booted with a USB and Mint 19.2. No dual option. I booted with a DVD and Mint 18.3 and all the options I might want. Hmmm... The quick and easy will be to load 18,3 and then update, I hope, or maybe the USB will see the already installed Mint and overwrite without harmi...

Re: Windows 10 new install - Are all versions of Windows 10 so intrusive?

In simple terms - Microsoft said the car's tyres needed changing as the tread was worn and it was a security thing. OK, that's normal. So they changed the tyres and didn't put the wheel nuts back on so the car crashed and destroyed the axles etc. Yes, the engine still goes but that's not much use if...

A few more links showing how Microsoft failed its users. I'll dig a bit more later but it was a recognised Microsoft failure. They decided to delete some folders without the update checking whether those fo...

The default PDF viewer is "Document Viewer". If you install Linux Mint Cinnamon it will be there. You can edit PDFs using LibreOffice, also automatically included. If you tell it to open in LibreOffice Write it will actually use LibreOffice Draw. Make sure you "Export as PDF" at the end of a session...

a type of about 20% grey on a white background is simply no longer legible. A few days later the type was black on white again... The free Wordpress themes tend to be set to grey text on white. I make a point of making my text black. Unfortunately with the free themes the CSS code is not accessible...

In addition to many extraordinarily badly designed websites, there are, of course, many badly designed, printed books: Have you ever read the 30 Second series of books done by The Quarto Group? Each page has a centre section to be read in 30 seconds, a very bad font used making reading slow plus fa...

A while ago we stopped to talk to a (older) shop proprietor sitting outside her second-hand book shop reading a Kindle. She liked it because she could set up the contrast as she wanted it. It made reading easier for her. However she said the youngsters preferred paper as in REAL books. So a matter o...

With the Revenue Service, they'd say, how much I owe and I'd be sued if I don't pay up. So I had this call from IRD and an Indian bloke. I asked for his name and said I'd call back. I did and the girl on the line laughed, knowing why I'd done a call back. "It's OK." she said, "It is genuine, he doe...

Actually, Adelaide River Exchange was from that era when I started in the Territory back in the late 70s. I never needed to fix one of those though, just replace a few cords on the switchboard. It was not long after I started in Darwin that they cut over to automatic in that town. :D And they'd put...

After Microsoft destroyed my partner's computer last year we are free of using Microsoft. However, teaching at SeniorNet, one is stuck with Windows users, not all but most. A couple of Linux users besides myself. One on Mint, one on Ubuntu (close to being changed to Mint). The Windows questions, the...

Are the cartridges with the new printer as big as a standard cartridge? Would you actually notice a difference in print quality? How often do you need auto double sided? If the answers are No, then what you have with a compatible cartridge should be the way to go. You are going to have to get cartri...

OK?
No?
OK then it is just simply a sensible idea, the more violently the better.
(I admit I had to be told it was from the film "The Shining" and the "Axe" scene)

The best bit about the really old phones, (there was a small crank on the side to do the "dialling" in Morse code on a party line) was they used a couple of large 1-1/2 volt batteries. When the P&T changed our batteries we kids got the old ones and had a power source for operating buzzers or relays ...
