Re: Why so complicated
Terminal doesn't even have a two key (Ctrl + V) Paste instruction. Why it has to have 3 keys is daft. I agree. That is one of the first things I change on a new install. Ctrl+C changed to copy. Ctrl + V changed to paste. Then I use Ctrl+Shift+C to break out of the terminal command and get to a prom...

Re: Why so complicated
"Holier than thou" syndrome permeates this thread Personally I wouldn't agree. It is more a "this doesn't make sense as none of that applies" especially where the complaint is about difficulties. Been a Linux user for ~25 years this explains why almost never used a "store&q...

Re: Problems upgrading Mint
I have had update problems where it says do this and comes up with a link to the web, was probably 20 to 21? It simply won't work. So? Copy Home as a folder to a backup disk. Do a new install from a USB stick wiping the disk as it does it. Copy across files (not folders) from the backup, those in th...

Re: INSTALL questions
on new install of linux, is it advisable to just use defaults for install, or use something else? If someone new as you are, definitely use the defaults. After 100 installations I always use the defaults. i think the install guide is poor! and too many conflicting things said on web I wrote up what...

Re: Why so complicated
WHY DOES EVERY PROGRAM I WANT TO INSTALL Have TO BE SO CONVOLUTED??? How? When I do an installation I add a few extra apps. Simply find what I want in the Repository and hit install. If the first of a few, copy & paste the password, and "Install" and that's it. Absolutely no complicat...

Re: Touchpad not working in Lenovo Ideapad 3 15IGL05
Today's job, a Lenovo Flex5 and the Touchpad not working. After a lot a messing around I eventually got in to the Bluetooth setup (I don't know why) and there at the top of the page "Touchpad" ON/OFF. A lot of very bad advice about it on the web. NOTE - this was Windows 11 NOTE also - the ...

Re: My computer gets too hot while using Linux Mint
Thanks for my first laugh this morning. I know, I know, I have a depraved mind. I'm the joker (person) who wrote it and missed my own "joke". Maybe because I'm older than you youngsters? By at least 6 months.... and not much grey hair left. Too many computers like this one (causing ...

Re: File transfer alternatives
I've used, or tried to use, Warpinator ever since it first was introduced to transfer files from my Android (Google Pixel) phone to my desktop Linux Mint computer. Yes, a bit of a pain especially if you have used Dukto for a year or two. It works so easily on everything except Mint 21.3. Ohhh....!!...

Re: My computer gets too hot while using Linux Mint
Find someone with a compressed air hose and blow all the dust out of it. I've had, "just about burn your fingers on the bottom... to can't feel if it is running" after blowing the dust out of one laptop.

LO Writer can't load PDF, only export to PDF. It is LO Draw that can import PDF. Open it using Draw. I've edited hundreds of PDFs using Draw and if the line of text needs a highlite mark, Draw is what I'd use. Just done a check. However the PDF was a document that had been PDFed and as noted, a sca...

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I'd be curious to know what your preferred method of file-sharing is on your home network The answer from across the Ditch is Dukto. It works on everything and is simple. Open on both devices. Sender opens the box with the recipient's name on it. Drag...

Re: Cleaning my laptop
Blowing out dust with compressed air is much better. I had one laptop, almost burn a finger on the bottom when it was going. Put the compressed air over it, clouds of dust (all done outside) and after that it was hard to tell by feel if the laptop was actually running. Yesterday, one of our desktop...

For format changing I use Mobile Media Converter. Open it and simply drag and drop the files. Do a whole CD at a time.
Video (mp4, avi, etc.) to sound (mp3, wav, etc.), Sound of one format to any other format. Sound mp3 to video mp4... Yes but there won't be a picture, there are limits

Re: Terminology Oldsters vs Youngsters
I've had no formal education with valves; had to practically work out in my own mind how they function, only getting a good idea after the advent of the Internet then YouTube etc. and reading and watching lots of stuff. I built my first radio, Hikers 1, back in about 1954. It was a kitset one valve...

Re: Terminology Oldsters vs Youngsters
A couple of days ago, "Can you fix valve radios?" "Yes, maybe." So in came this radio, plastic case, three knobs. Off with the knobs, 2 screws at the back, Ohm meter between the output valve's plate and the supply capacitor. Yes, open circuit. Power on to check and yes the audio ...

Re: How do I know if I'm ready to permanently switch to Linux Mint?
Dukto doesn't run using the latest Mint so I use WINE and run the Windows version. I setup Dukto on all installations I do. So, does your TurboTax not run on WINE? We had problems with our tax (IRD Inland Revenue Dept) a couple of years ago and downloading a PDF just got a mass of computer code. Yes...

@RollyShed - If you were to take a look at the screenshot in my original post, you'll see that Auto-arrange is off. And still desktop icon shifting. Ugh!!! Ooops, sorry, missed looking at that. I have icons spread across the desktop, two monitors, messy layout and everything stays where it has been...
