Re: Terminology Oldsters vs Youngsters

A couple of days ago, "Can you fix valve radios?" "Yes, maybe." So in came this radio, plastic case, three knobs. Off with the knobs, 2 screws at the back, Ohm meter between the output valve's plate and the supply capacitor. Yes, open circuit. Power on to check and yes the audio ...

Re: How do I know if I'm ready to permanently switch to Linux Mint?

Dukto doesn't run using the latest Mint so I use WINE and run the Windows version. I setup Dukto on all installations I do. So, does your TurboTax not run on WINE? We had problems with our tax (IRD Inland Revenue Dept) a couple of years ago and downloading a PDF just got a mass of computer code. Yes...

Re: Cinnamon Desktop Icons Shift to The Left

@RollyShed - If you were to take a look at the screenshot in my original post, you'll see that Auto-arrange is off. And still desktop icon shifting. Ugh!!! Ooops, sorry, missed looking at that. I have icons spread across the desktop, two monitors, messy layout and everything stays where it has been...

Re: Advice on using Linux on old laptop -continuation post-

Now with the SSD in and the 3GB works fine, I’m just wondering if you still think that for Linux Mint I should still be getting 4GB instead. Also is a SSD 128 GB enough? I’m not planning on keeping big files. I just want to at least have something that I don’t have to stress any more about. My usin...

Not here.
Not with the 50 or so installations I've done. Linux in, Windows out the door... so to speak.

The other thing I always do when doing an installation is -
Right click on the desktop
Go down to Customize
Auto arrange OFF

Did you / have you, installed "ublock origin" on your browsers?

If the answer is "No" then that's the main problem.

They were floppies (thin plastic with magnetic layer) but in a solid case instead of a flexible envelope as the 8" and 5-1/4" were.

8" were a bit iffy and then came the 5-1/4" How could they be better? But they were. They were much more likely to work.

Re: move from win 10 to linux mint

Generally, I would caution against "moving" or "switching" from Windows. It's too big of a change, and a lot of things may not work, or may not work to your expectation / satisfaction. You might end up getting frustrated and go back to Windows in anger. It is NOT a too big a cha...

Am really thinking about moving from win 10 to mint , tried mint in vm a few yrs ago , but really want to try it on my laptop to see what its like , In 2018 my partner, after MS wiped her Windows 10, has used Linux Mint Cinnamon since then. Re: A question of preference...

Anyway the phone usually automatically capitalizes the first word of a sentence and you need to take your efforts to change it to lowercase :) True except I also always put a full stop at the end of a sentence on the phone. To get a capital i (as in "I was there"), I put in a full stop, g...

Only a limited number of repositories from New Zealand & Britain. One of the NZ repositories is Canterbury University where Ernest Rutherford did his degree and where I worked, both of us in the Chemistry Department. Note, almost 100 years apart. Ernest Rutherford left Canterbury College, New Z...

Re: Terminology Oldsters vs Youngsters

1.) Well the first time you drive an automatic at some point you are going to try and change gear with the brake pedal and because something is going wrong you instinctively press harder. You only do this once! 2.) The other side of this is when driving a manual you will forget to change gear, e.g....

Re: Terminology Oldsters vs Youngsters

I wonder how many people these days would still be able to drive a manual vehicle with knackered clutch and/or gearbox vs. the equivalent in an automatic? I could probably get you home or at least within suitable rescue distance with the former; not quite so sure about the latter. I had two LandRov...

If you want to make it a bit harder then make sure the gearbox doesn't have syncromesh, meaning you have to double-de-clutch when changing down.

Re: Terminology Oldsters vs Youngsters

I'm not sure if you're just joking about the gear selector lever on an automatic transmission car making it a "stick shift" but, if not, stick shift is a term for manual transmissions in many parts of the world. Yes, I was joking. However, as I've said before, those over 70? should only d...
