Re: My computer gets too hot while using Linux Mint

Thanks for my first laugh this morning. I know, I know, I have a depraved mind. I'm the joker (person) who wrote it and missed my own "joke". Maybe because I'm older than you youngsters? By at least 6 months.... and not much grey hair left. Too many computers like this one (causing ...

Re: My computer gets too hot while using Linux Mint

I have on the table at the moment a Samsung R580 running Windows 7 and it is overheating so it locks up and then fails to run

Obviously a compressed air blow job tomorrow.

Re: File transfer alternatives

I've used, or tried to use, Warpinator ever since it first was introduced to transfer files from my Android (Google Pixel) phone to my desktop Linux Mint computer. Yes, a bit of a pain especially if you have used Dukto for a year or two. It works so easily on everything except Mint 21.3. Ohhh....!!...

Find someone with a compressed air hose and blow all the dust out of it. I've had, "just about burn your fingers on the bottom... to can't feel if it is running" after blowing the dust out of one laptop.

LO Writer can't load PDF, only export to PDF. It is LO Draw that can import PDF. Open it using Draw. I've edited hundreds of PDFs using Draw and if the line of text needs a highlite mark, Draw is what I'd use. Just done a check. However the PDF was a document that had been PDFed and as noted, a sca...

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I'd be curious to know what your preferred method of file-sharing is on your home network The answer from across the Ditch is Dukto. It works on everything and is simple. Open on both devices. Sender opens the box with the recipient's name on it. Drag...

Re: Cleaning my laptop

Blowing out dust with compressed air is much better. I had one laptop, almost burn a finger on the bottom when it was going. Put the compressed air over it, clouds of dust (all done outside) and after that it was hard to tell by feel if the laptop was actually running. Yesterday, one of our desktop...

Re: Looking for a program to convert music CDs to mp3/FLAC/etc.

For format changing I use Mobile Media Converter. Open it and simply drag and drop the files. Do a whole CD at a time.

Video (mp4, avi, etc.) to sound (mp3, wav, etc.), Sound of one format to any other format. Sound mp3 to video mp4... Yes but there won't be a picture, there are limits :(

Re: Terminology Oldsters vs Youngsters

I've had no formal education with valves; had to practically work out in my own mind how they function, only getting a good idea after the advent of the Internet then YouTube etc. and reading and watching lots of stuff. I built my first radio, Hikers 1, back in about 1954. It was a kitset one valve...

Re: Terminology Oldsters vs Youngsters

A couple of days ago, "Can you fix valve radios?" "Yes, maybe." So in came this radio, plastic case, three knobs. Off with the knobs, 2 screws at the back, Ohm meter between the output valve's plate and the supply capacitor. Yes, open circuit. Power on to check and yes the audio ...

Dukto doesn't run using the latest Mint so I use WINE and run the Windows version. I setup Dukto on all installations I do. So, does your TurboTax not run on WINE? We had problems with our tax (IRD Inland Revenue Dept) a couple of years ago and downloading a PDF just got a mass of computer code. Yes...

@RollyShed - If you were to take a look at the screenshot in my original post, you'll see that Auto-arrange is off. And still desktop icon shifting. Ugh!!! Ooops, sorry, missed looking at that. I have icons spread across the desktop, two monitors, messy layout and everything stays where it has been...

Now with the SSD in and the 3GB works fine, I’m just wondering if you still think that for Linux Mint I should still be getting 4GB instead. Also is a SSD 128 GB enough? I’m not planning on keeping big files. I just want to at least have something that I don’t have to stress any more about. My usin...

Not here.
Not with the 50 or so installations I've done. Linux in, Windows out the door... so to speak.

They were floppies (thin plastic with magnetic layer) but in a solid case instead of a flexible envelope as the 8" and 5-1/4" were.

8" were a bit iffy and then came the 5-1/4" How could they be better? But they were. They were much more likely to work.

Re: move from win 10 to linux mint

Generally, I would caution against "moving" or "switching" from Windows. It's too big of a change, and a lot of things may not work, or may not work to your expectation / satisfaction. You might end up getting frustrated and go back to Windows in anger. It is NOT a too big a cha...
