Re: Still failing to successfully install Mint (19.1 this time)

I got further than I did last time, but the inxi below is from before then. So, I managed to access my install, which I couldn't do last time, due to blank screens or glitchy screens or whatnot. There was a pattern that I noticed when trying to login to Mint, which I'll mention here: I press F12 on ...

Re: Still failing to successfully install Mint (19.1 this time)

as I said in my first reply to you: For anything more specific post your inxi -Fxz output as per the red Forum rules banner with the "how to get help" link... Just glanced at the Forum, it looks like the relevant section is [5] ("Details!"), in the link below: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic...

Re: Still failing to successfully install Mint (19.1 this time)

Ah, important information there. So my guess is a kernel incompatibility then. You still did not post your inxi output by the way so we do not know what type UEFI you got, maybe it's got known issues. You could try setting some kernel compatibility options (see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Kernel...

Re: Partitioning options when installing Mint. Suggested settings?

My suggestion (following my usual partitioning scheme & modified to suit your intended usage) is as follows, using GParted to set up the partitions: I'm replying to your post as a bookmark, as I haven't checked my Notifications for ages. However, seeing as I am still having issues installing Mint (...

Re: Still failing to successfully install Mint (19.1 this time)

Storage boot option control - Legacy only I'm not exactly sure what they mean by that (is this USB storage or general boot mode?) but it sounds worth a try toggling this feature (to whatever the other options are). The other options are: Disabled; UEFI Only; Legacy Only I tried all 3 without succes...

Re: Still failing to successfully install Mint (19.1 this time)

Sounds like a broken UEFI. Find and flash the latest BIOS update for your system, it might start working after that already. Otherwise check your BIOS/UEFI settings, in particular the boot mode and the secure boot mode. Try disabling secure boot first and if that doesn't help then change the boot m...

Re: Still failing to successfully install Mint (19.1 this time)

Thanks for the suggestions. Will try them. I replaced the DVD that I was using with a different one from the same magazine's issue, but still the same problem. Will look at buying another magazine's current edition, which also has Mint 19.1 plus another distro which might be "interesting" to have. W...

Still failing to successfully install Mint (19.1 this time)

I managed to get to the installation stage of 19.1 using Rufus with a USB and needing to do so whilst in compatibility mode. I can't say that I managed to reboot to complete the process but I did have the distro on my SSD and could start that up and get up to stage where I entered my decryption pass...

Re: Partitioning options when installing Mint. Suggested settings?

Some years back I made some notes on how to manually partition for LMDE and I had planned on using those notes for the latest MInt (not LMDE). However, either Mint now uses a different installer or it never had the same installer as regular Mint. Any resources for manually partitioning on Mint, beca...

Re: Unable to install Mint 19.1

I tried installing Mint 19 via USB but that also failed. I had tried installing 19.1 without success earlier. This seems to suggest to me that there is an issue with bootable USBs as far version 19s of Linux go, as I am able to install Mint 18.3 via USB. Why is that? It seems that the only way for m...

Re: Unable to install Mint 19.1

I found it possible to install an older version of Mint using a DVD medium. Once I set that up I downloaded a slightly newer version of Mint onto the same USB that I used before, unsuccessfully. I took all the steps mentioned in an online article on how to upgrade to the latest Mint via the terminal...

Unable to install Mint 19.1

I downloaded the Mint 19.1 (64 bit version, I think) ISO onto a SanDisk Ultra USB 3.0 32GB drive. The drive was new, with nothing else on it, apart from files which came with the disc. When I tried to start the installation process, I got error messages including: "Couldn't get UEFI ab list" "Method...

Re: Partitioning options when installing Mint. Suggested settings?

About the only thing I can recommend is a separate /home which will make it easier to upgrade or reinstall. 24G should be fine for the root partition and the rest for swap and /home. If you want logical partitioning then you will have to set them up manually as the default LVM install uses the enti...

Partitioning options when installing Mint. Suggested settings?

I assume that the setup process will ask me how I want to partition my drive, whether I want to use logical partitioning and whether I want to use encryption for the drive. Just wondering how I should do all those things. I'll be installing Mint on a dedicate drive, which has 953GB of total space. I...

Re: Having trouble putting Mint ISO on to USB using Etcher

Thanks guys. You guys took the words right out of my mouth, as I was going to post that I tried Rufus and it worked fine. I wasn't sure what cluster size to go with for the process and whether or not that makes a difference, but I went with the default, smallest size. Rufus isn't entirely clear thou...

Having trouble putting Mint ISO on to USB using Etcher

I'm using the latest version of Etcher to try and put the latest version of Mint onto a 32GB SanDisk USB. Currently I'm getting the message "You're not authorised to perform this operation. Please ensure you have necessary permissions for this task". I'm on Windows 10 and I'm not sure how I'm suppos...

Re: Will Linux Mint become a rolling distribution?

I do find it a bit frustrating when people say they can't be bothered to repair a bad install when a very small effort prior to carrying out the install would have avoided the issue in the first place, then they blame the distro itself. My first major install on Mint failed, but because I had taken...

Re: Will Linux Mint become a rolling distribution? Solved

Both Mint and LMDE share a common base (Debian) -- but Mint has Ubuntu as an intermediate base. That is... Debian --> Ubuntu --> Mint Debian --> LMDE So while most things should work pretty well, there are occasional differences. I've not run into them myself though -- I have Spotify, Chrome, and a...
