Re: Saving TimeShift to a USB Drive

I plan to keep 5 boot and 5 daily snapshots if that helps. So far in my VM, the average for my daily snapshots is 372,000-400,000 file that has changed. I was thinking around 32-64 GB. Where is the timeshift folder again? I'm guessing it's one of the hidden folders, but in which folder, the /Home or...

Re: Saving TimeShift to a USB Drive

As a newbie to Linux, I'm willing to back up my files to my NTFS drive, and timeshift to a USB stick, but how big should the USB flash drive be? What size, 32 GB, 64 GB 256? How big is enough?

Thanks,

Re: Putting AppImagtes in Menu in XFCE

OK I tried the Create Launcher and filled it out, and the Launcher is on the Desktop, but there's no offer to integrate with the menu. Sigh. I'm working in Mate, as that seems to be the DE I'm most comfortable with rather than XFCE, which I was originally planning to go with when installing it on my...

Re: Putting AppImagtes in Menu in XFCE

Thanks. The icon size is just what I need, so thanks. I appreciate all the great replies. I've been using Linux Mint XFCE in a VM, but I"ve been between XFCE and Mate, but I kind of like Mate better. (Waiting for the holidays to get a second hard drive to put Linux on. and noting that it's better no...

Re: Putting AppImagtes in Menu in XFCE

OK. What size does the AppImage icon need to be. Not real clear about that, otherwise, I'm good. ;)

(Solved) Putting AppImagtes in Menu in XFCE

I have a couple of AppImages that I want to put in the XFCE menu. However, I would prefer to do it manually, so they can continue working. Can someone walk me through the steps to getting a launcher for them? Also, for the launcher icons, what is the appropriate size for the icons. I"d prefer to do ...

Re: SOLVED How to create "shortcuts" to an Appimage ?

Does anyone know the maximum size for the icons for AppImages-for the launcher? I found a couple for 512 X 512, but is that too big? BTW, AppImage Launcher used to work, but it doesn't work anymore or at least I can't Open the Scrivener AppImage anymore. Maybe it's an issue with the latest upgrades,...

Re: Welcome Ladies - post here :)

I shudder to mention this due to it being related to a 20+ year old publishing software product that is probably best left in the 90s where it belongs; but Winetricks makes it rather trivial to install even the most ancient .net 1.1 versions. PlayOnLinux also supports this kind of thing. BTW if you...

Re: Welcome Ladies - post here :)

most of my Windows Programs except for PrintMaster 18, which runs fine on Windows 7, but not much with Wine (because of the needed .net framework 1.1 so will be dual-booting with Windows 7 on one hard drive, then getting another for Linux. Some things i plan to use Crossover or Play on Linux for my...

Re: Installing Windows on VM

I have Windows 7 now, but can I use the product key on the Linux side(it's an OEM) once I have Linux Mint on a second hard drive, or would it just be easier to use the hard drive that has Windows on it for the few Windows programs that we would be using. Neither of us game, but my hubby uses DAZ 3D,...

Re: Welcome Ladies - post here :)

My name is Katherine Logan, but my hubby calls me Maghdalena, thus my username. I heard about Linux around 2006, and tried Mint for a while, but ended up not really using it all that much(I dual-booted with Windows XP at the time. Just wasn't ready yet, I guess. Anyway, fast forward to 2017, I got a...

Re: [SOLVED] How do I get an appimage to show up as an application?

So does anyone know how to do it manually? I got the Scrivener Appimage to be executable in the permissions tab under "Properties", but it didn't ask if i wanted a menu item. It's in my downloads folder for right now. Is there a particular folder I should put it in, like "Opt", and could someone wal...

(Solved) Jump lists in Mate

I know you can do "jump lists" in the Cinnamon desktop, but can you do that in the panel for Mate and XFCE as well? That is, pin recent documents to the panel like you can Windows 7 and Cinnamon? I couldn't find anyone addressing that. Is that just a Gnome 3/Cinnamon thing, or could I do it in Mate ...

Re: a separate partition for /home

Is this like redirecting the libraries in Windows 7 by any chance? That is, in my case, I linked the Downloads, Documents, Music, and Videos for me and my husband, and I save to the pertinent "library", but the files are actually stored on our external hard drive. If so, then that's what I'd like to...

Downloading via mirrors vs Torrent: Which is best?

My next question is does anyone have any opinions about which is best, downloading the torrent version of Mint Mate and Cinnamon: Torrent or Mirror? I understand there can be errors or verifying issues with mirrors, but which is a better idea for a newbie, downloading the iso by torrent or mirror? A...

Re: <SOLVED> Mint Mate vs XFCE on HP Compaq 6000 Pro Microtower

As far as posting on a "solved" issue/question, not a problem. That's nice to know about memory issues with VM. Yikes!

Also, I agree, the invasiveness isn't worth the money you pay for Windows 10? Not liking the sound of that.

Thanks again!

That's interesting. I thought it was required. I don't know all that much about Virtual Box, so I guess I better check out their user guide, lol. I wouldn't mind if I didn't have to activate it and see what happens. Thanks for the info. :)

Re: Mint Mate vs XFCE on HP Compaq 6000 Pro Microtower

I use Xfce on my old netbook but I don't really think there's that much of a difference between it and Mate in terms of performance. Not enough to use Xfce if you prefer Mate. The best way is to dl the live CDs of both versions. Then boot them from a USB stick if possible and try them yourself. On ...
