I installed the software in the original method that I used (by having the entry in sources.list. I am happy to report that it worked.
Probably the solution is attributed to having secure boot turned off. The only other thing that I did differently is removing the directory in .config.

You could try resetting the Chromium settings to default. Or, create a new profile and see if the passwords can save there.
