Re: WINE is breaking my heart

This can be difficult to fix, as it can be caused by several different things. Let's try the simplest solution first. Open Terminal and run this command: sudo aptitude install --install-recommends winehq-stable For future reference, per the Mint release notes, there's a much easier way to install W...

WINE is breaking my heart

Hi, Mint 19 Cinnamon PLEASE excuse me if this has been spoken of before, but the search function isn't helping on the forums, and search engines bring up nothing. I only need it for LMMS (Linux MultiMedia Studio) to run .dll files as VSTs, and I'm told by a Linux man on their forums that all that's ...

Re: Troubleshoot memory problems

Thank you. Currently running test. Can't find boot media, so I fumbled around in recovery boot option and remounted the drives so my HDD became read/write, then installed SMART from normal boot. Linux is teaching me how to not panic. If my internal drive isn't at fault after this test, what else can...

[SOLVED] Troubleshoot memory problems

Hi, Please relocate my post if necessary. Thank you. Mint Cinnamon 18 Trouble began with folders not opening and, later, files refusing to save. I rebooted and screen quickly told me "failed to write" "read-only system". I read here on the forums this is a protective measure for one of a few reasons...

Trouble with graphical FTP clients

Hi folks, Mint Cinnamon 19 here Because I'm a lazy, eternal noob, I never learned how to run my websites locally so I can edit them. So naturally I like being able to edit remote files and have them upload when I'm finished with minimal effort. This has proven difficult for me since installing Mint ...

Re: Power Applet not displaying

Thank you for your response. I need to clarify a few things, though. You could also download and add the Brightness and Gamma applet to your panel. Right click on your panel and click Add to panel > Download > Select and download Brightness and Gamma applet > Manage > Select Brightness & Gamma apple...

[SOLVED] Power Applet not displaying

Hi folks, Mint Cinnamon 19. Running it on a desktop. The end game here is to not be blinded for the sin of using my computer at night. I've tried every trick in the book, including using programs like f.lux (doesn't work) and Redshift (can't make a config file to set brightness). Then I discovered s...

Re: Help with screen brightness (or, how my monitor is slowly killing me)

I created a config file for redshift: 1. Create/Edit .conf in terminal sudo gedit ~/.config/redshift/redshift.conf 2. Define Paste into file, replacing any text unless wanted [redshift] temp-day=6500K temp-night=5000 transition=1 ;gamma=0.8:0.7:0.8 gamma=1.000:1.000:1.000 location-provider=geoclue a...

Re: Help with screen brightness (or, how my monitor is slowly killing me)

Okay, so it is redshift that resets the monitor brightness. I've looked into setting the brightness level through redshift itself, but it involves commands in terminal above my experience level. Anyone care to point me toward an "explain to me like I'm 5" tutorial on configuring this program? If I f...

[Solved] Help with screen brightness (or, how my monitor is slowly killing me)

Hi folks, After f.lux randomly decided not to work, I installed Redshift to block the blue light spectrum which is slowly destroying my face. This might be the culprit. Is there any reason for the following command to take effect and then automatically reverse 2 seconds later? xrandr --output VGA-0 ...

Re: Skype is angreh with me - wants my data

I prefer my much more complicated conspiracy theory.
The repeated crashes ceased - irrational in how they began and how it stopped. Even on Windows, if something doesn't start working normally after 5 reboots it's never going to work

Skype is angreh with me - wants my data

I've been running Mint and Skype on Mint without hiccups for over a month UNTIL LAST NIGHT. Lately I've noticed warning signs that messaging and voice over Skype isn't secure for those paying attention. Cortana was asking me back on Windows repeatedly if it can read my messages "to better serve me";...

Re: Help with storage "device" changing locations

I got assistance on the Installation and Boot forum, on Revert fstab without live cd for future reference.
fstab seems to have accepted the line and the file system seems to be behaving itself. So I think we can call that a save.

Thank you both. What a wild ride.

[SOLVED] Revert fstab without live cd

Howdy folks, I ballsed up some support instructions from another thread/issue and now I'm stuck with grub and emergency mode, and pecking at my tiny phone for info. fstab is corrupt. Thus the boot issue. Live CD takes an hour to boot, then crashes into fallback mode and nothing responds. On top of t...
