Re: CPU temperatures stay as high as 70°C even with 5% CPU usage

...'desktops' cannot by definition change temperatures by...20+ degrees, and i've explained why. Let alone broken BIOSes. A misbehaving background app / service that causes lots of interrupts / activity, yes. Sorry, I meant Mint xfce 18.3, not xfce only. It could be a desktop-specific bug but I can...

Re: Duplicate and Switch users how to?

I don't use Nemo, but Thunar has the same things. However, I can't find any reference to these bookmarks anywhere on my system. They're probably in a config file, but I'll be darned if I can find it. Yes, same here, tried searching it all over the place, couldn't find it. I will try grsync tomorrow...

Re: Duplicate and Switch users how to?

Places Center??? What's that? Thanks for helping me out with this. Even though we're having a hard time sorting this out (hard time is most likely due to my inability), your efforts can't go unnoticed. :D Thanks for helping me with the flatpaks, and thanks for this too. :) The symlink and grsync me...

In Nemo sidebar, you get a number of default bookmarks like Documents, Pictures and all, these are grouped together in Places and placed Mint's Menu.

Re: Duplicate and Switch users how to?

Normally the -a switch is used with rsync, which is the equivalent of -rlptgoD (p=permissions,o=owner,g=group). I haven't used Grsync in a while so I don't know what its default settings are. Would a photo of the settings do? It might be easier to just copy everything over and change the owner/grou...

Re: Duplicate and Switch users how to?

Sorry, I screwed up on the find command: find /home/user -lname '/home/mandy/*' -ls 50+ you say, huh? Hopefully someone with more experience will jump in. Can you show me the command you're using with Grsync ? find /home/user -lname '/home/mandy/*' -ls find: ‘/home/user/.gnupg/private-keys-v1.d’: P...

Re: Duplicate and Switch users how to?

I didn't mean ownership, I meant permissions (the -p switch, which is part of the -a switch). So, if I use -p, it should preserve the permssions from the original files? Tested Grsync again, now it can't preserve permissions or ownership, it can only preserve group. I'll need a lot more testing on ...

Re: Duplicate and Switch users how to?

Are you linking files or directories - I'm confused. If only files, what files are you talking about? Are these config files (like .bashrc, for example)? Directories and files, recursively. The find command can do this, but I'll need an example. I've two users, user and mandy. I've some symlinks in...

Re: [SOLVED] Timeshift snapshot sizes don't match up with "snapshots" folder size

OK, I see what happened. Let's start over, shall we? First, remove all of you current Flatpak programs. Second, remove the system Flatpak repository: flatpak remote-delete --system flathub Before going any further, verify that /var/lib/flatpak is empty (it can be removed). Third, add the user Flatp...

Re: Timeshift snapshot sizes don't match up with "snapshots" folder size

Thanks, I tested this. But it seems the / directory still grows massively as only flatpaks are installed under $HOME/.var/app and their dependencies still find a way to /. Is this supposed to be happening? If yes, is there a way to route those dependencies away from / and the timeshift snapshots? I...

Re: CPU temperatures stay as high as 70°C even with 5% CPU usage

Try to install Mint Xfce 18.3 I had problems with high cpu temperature. See my thread https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=275132 just in case it works for you to. :) Have a nice day and good luck. Yes, I had tried Xfce 18.3, it had much lower temperatures, around 40-50°C on ...

Re: Timeshift snapshot sizes don't match up with "snapshots" folder size

To remove the default system repo (uninstall all of your current Flatpak apps first): sudo flatpak remote-delete flathub To add the user repo: flatpak remote-add --user --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo From now on, your new Flatpak installs will be under $HOME/.v...

Re: Appimages and security issues

I'm a complete newbie here and I don't know squat about security. But I just installed an Appimage program called ClipGrab. Couldn't have been easier, and it WORKS! It's a great technology, it's compatible across a lot of distros, it's really small in size and they've built quite a following. I use...

Duplicate and Switch users how to?

Hello, I've been testing BiT and Grsync for quite a while now. To test them, I create a new user with similar rights to the first user I had created on my system. I'll learning multi-user account management, permissions, restrictions and all, so this is kind of a way to test BiT and Grsync. So, my q...

Re: CPU temperatures stay as high as 70°C even with 5% CPU usage

Fancontrol depends on Lm-sensors, with which Mint comes. Many members here can teach you how to configure Fancontrol. I believe the risk is low as long as you do it carefully. I have even hacked into its configuration: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=289992 Thanks, will test this....

Re: Appimages and security issues

Hi Mintymandy34, You are welcome... I currently don't have the full understanding about LMD with ClamAV, but I can learn about that and will add to that request. :D Although "LMD" (maldet) is run from a console terminal, it is fairly easy to use. The Link I provided before has examples of using it....

Re: [SOLVED] Aptik

I don't think having the Preserve ACL enabled makes a difference - he uses the separate file so you can backup to media that don't support full permissions. I probably don't need the ACL - I checked one time and IIRC the only thing I found with ACL's were the two folders /media/root and /media/stev...

Re: CPU temperatures stay as high as 70°C even with 5% CPU usage

Reducing the "wattage" setting in your machine's firmware config. (UEFI) is likely to also reduce the heat buildup; even 5 watts worth of generated heat is significant in a semi-enclosed space. I'd give it a go & see what the temperatures & performance are like with each one, looks like it's going ...

Re: Opacified / Translucent / Transparent Windows in Cinnamon.

You can kill the script running in the background with a terminal command. Assuming you had saved the script with the suggested filename... pkill opacify_windows.sh That will leave all currently open windows in their last opacity state though. So perhaps a little secondary script to toggle the main...
