Re: Using Linux Mint and Unsupported Windows 7

Larry 78723: Thanks for the encouragement! I assume that removing AC power from the modem would not allow any internet signal to corrupt my system. It is easier to "pull the AC plug" than to remove the ethernet cable from the back panel of my computer and to disconnect my router (which broadcasts). ...

(Solved) Using Linux Mint and Unsupported Windows 7

I have a few questions concerning my future use of my dual boot system. After mid-January, my Windows 7 will be unsupported. At present, I use Linux Mint except when there is a special program I have in Windows 7 and not in Mint. 1. Is there a way I can run such Windows programs within Linux without...

Re: xsane with Canon LiDE 120 scanner

All of your effort is appreciated: a Christmas present from an LMF friend!

I have been working with Simple Scan, which I find adequate. It omits a marginal border of the 8.5x11.0 page, but in most cases that would be tolerable.

Best New Year wishes!

Re: xsane with Canon LiDE 120 scanner

The Canon LiDE 120 scanner is a home-use flat bed scanner. I think the least expensive of the scanners it sold at the time. It is factory calibrated.

Re: xsane with Canon LiDE 120 scanner

In an earlier message to me you stated:

"your scanner is completly supported by sane:
http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html#Z-CANON"

Maybe if Linux developers produced fewer distros, Canon and others would provide the drivers for them.

Thanks for your effort to assist me and Happy Holidays!

Re: xsane with Canon LiDE 120 scanner

Yes, I have tried Simple Scan some time ago but found it a bit too simple. I have dual boot system with Windows 7, and when I need to copy or to send a document by email I use the software from Canon in Windows 7. Now that Windows 7 is about to lose support, I would like to use Linux Mint as much as...

Re: xsane with Canon LiDE 120 scanner

I neglected to state that I am using Linux Mint 19.1 cinnamon rather than ubuntu. I used the commands you offered in the terminal after I had deleted XSANE from my system. After about 25 minutes of installations and updating and upgrating, all very cheering and impressive, the commands finished. I r...

(Solved) xsane with Canon LiDE 120 scanner

Xsane does not seem to work as its descriptions state with my Canon LiDE 120 scanner. In the viewer and copy modes, I choose lineart to reproduce black and white, text originals: letters, forms - nothing graphical. The size choice is grayed out. It is set at 8 x 10 in rather than 8.5 x 11 in - my pa...

Re: How to Change USB Stick's Name?

Too bad that to accomplish a simple task of renaming one must use an external program! Not much thought went into Mint in that regard.

I just tried Gparted and found no way of renaming a USB stick with that program. Could you be badly misinformed or guessing?

Re: How to Use Ext4 Partition to Create Singel Boot Linux Mint OS?

Thanks to all for your replies and suggestions. I do not want to install Linux 19.2. I chose the 19.1 installation because it was described as supported for five years. I do not wish to spend my time installing and setting up new systems. Thanks! My Rank (skip if you wish) Computers save a great dea...

Re: How to Use Ext4 Partition to Create Singel Boot Linux Mint OS?

Larry78723: Your suggestion to delete the unwanted data and then expand the ext4 partition seems good. After deleting the data in the now empty Windows partition, how do I remove the empty partitions, 1, 2, and 3 to provide the entire space for the ext4 partition (the 4th) to expand into? Should I d...

Re: How to Use Ext4 Partition to Create Singel Boot Linux Mint OS?

To Flemur: You have offered what seems like a good procedure. The instruction, " Then carefully check the copied-over /etc/fstab and make sure the UUIDs (or LABELs) match correctly. It sounds dopey and you might be better off with another method, but it works" is not clear to me. What do you mean by...

Re: How to Use Ext4 Partition to Create Singel Boot Linux Mint OS?

To Wharf Rat: I am honored to receive a reply from the forum's moderator. How are you? I do not wish to do another setup. My ext4 partition works well. I just need to construct what is called, I believe, a "grub" file or a boot partition. I have an external HD and can create an image of my internal ...

Re: How to Use Ext4 Partition to Create Singel Boot Linux Mint OS?

This replies to several of the suggestions kindly offered: 1. I do not wish to pay Microsoft for Windows 10. I paid for Windows 7 when I bought my desktop. Paying once for an OS is enough. 2. I see no need for more than one partition of my HD beyond the boot partition (or "grub" or whatever it is ca...

(Solved) How to Use Ext4 Partition to Create Singel Boot Linux Mint OS?

I now have a dual boot system, Linux Mint 19.1 and Windows 7. In two months Windows7 will be unsupported. My HD has 4 partitions. The 4th partition is called ext4 and contains my Linux 19.1 OS . I am thinking of copying ext4 from my HD to a USB stick, reformatting my HD, then pasting the ext4 from t...

Re: How to print the contents of my download folder?

I never know how to interpret many of instructions kindly supplied. For example, is path something I must supply, as in "home/alvin/" ? or is it part of the command ? I obtained results with "ls -l path to Downloads" but they were not in the same order as the list I am trying to copy. To sum up, the...
