Re: Could not install security update (Solved)

Pjotr: I followed your suggestion to a successful installation of the 83.0 version of Firefox. I restarted, and the X in the update notification was changed to a check: all updates received. You have helped me in the past with other issues as well. Thank you once more! Now my issue is truly solved.

Re: Could not install security update

Pjotr: Firefox tells me that I have the latest update to my system: 81.0 When a new update is available, the announcement will be made - I am told. I shall wait for it. Thanks.

Re: Could not install security update

A request for help with a problem is not a commitment to follow the help that is offered. Recall, your suggestion came with no guarantee it would work, and no guarantee was sought. There is no discourtesy in choosing not to do so. I did thank you. That is all that courtesy requires of me. Following ...

Re: Could not install security update

I looked at the instructions the link provided and decided the procedure might be time consuming and, even then, might not work. This, that failed, is called a security update. My view is that since security is involved, Linux should offer an update that works. I should not have to troubleshoot it. ...

Could not install security update (Solved)

My update notification in the system tray showed a new update for installation. When I tried to install it, I received the following message: Firefox 82.0.3+ linuxmint1 +tricia Could not install the security update Screenshot from 2020-11-22 10-16-56.png The above is a screenshot of an error message...

Re: Grabbing Hold of the Grub

zcot and antikythera: You seem to have misunderstood me. I may not be at all expert, but I know enough to work from the live Linux Mint to make the partition changes I want. That is what I had successfully done using gparted. Admittedly, in my early attempts to make the changes in that way, I failed...

Re: Grabbing Hold of the Grub

Thanks for the image! I had already tried that, not long after it was suggested to me. The response I received from my software manage was "No matching packages found". I don't know why my system did not find it. I have not been capricious or wasteful of others' time. That is why I went to...

Re: Grabbing Hold of the Grub

Kindly let me know where to find the Boot Repair Tool to which you believe I was referred. As I recall, I was told - I believe by antikythera - to use such a tool, but he did not give me a link to it or describe precisely where to find it. I looked in software manage and did not find it. I googled B...

Re: Grabbing Hold of the Grub

I have no pretensions to be a technologically trained person and have not indicated any such expertise. My knowledge of computers is that of a lay person who uses a computer because I am practically compelled to by my bank, my other financial institutions, my shopping needs, and my interest in what ...

No grub help on a grub forum?

Could someone offer me grub help that I can understand. I have received some partial assistance, which is appreciated, but I need some plain enough help for my untrained mind. I have learned so far from antiskythera, thank you, which tells me to make the partition changes I wish and then to use a gr...

Re: Grabbing Hold of the Grub

To antikythera: I googled and learned of the device named from the island of Kythera. I suppose that is where the instrument(s) were first found. Too bad the ancient Greeks did what we, too, may do: destroyed themselves by war! For all their wisdom, they - from Alcibiades to Thucydides - did not exe...

Re: Grabbing Hold of the Grub

To antikythera: 1. Is the "boot repair tool" to be found in the software manager? What is it called, please?
2. What is the meaning of "kythera" ?

Grabbing Hold of the Grub (Solved)

I am trying to use my partitioned HDD more efficiently by applying the resizing and copying features of gparted on my Linux Mint 19.1 system. Please note that my system was a dual with Windows 7. I have removed Windows 7. Now its unused space lies in front of the ext4 partition. When I copy and past...

Re: From Dual OS to Single OS

To linux-rox: I have returned to live gparted and was able to change the partitions to what you see below. I had successfully copied the ext4 partition to the second partition and allocated all of the remaining space to it, as you can see. That did not work! What gparted did in copying was to overwr...

Re: From Dual OS to Single OS

I have not made clear, I guess, is that with gparted I have tried to resize the extended partition #4. Its boundaries are not movable, The partitions limits are fixed and the size is fixed at maximum and minimum of 200MB. I have tried everything. I have even copied ext4 in partition #5 to the partit...

Re: From Dual OS to Single OS

No further postings noted. That's OK. I just muddle along with what I have until it is time to upgrade to a new Linux version. I cannot in good faith mark this "solved" because no one seems to know how to use gparted to remove an unmovable partition. Maybe gparted is not strong enough. Tha...

Re: From Dual OS to Single OS

to Lord Boltar and moem: I have carried forward Lord Boltar's prescription to the point of having removed the 2nd and 3rd partitions (Windows reserve and Windows OS). That done, I now have about 270GB of unallocated space preceding my partition #4, which is named "extension". It contains n...

Re: From Dual OS to Single OS

To moem: I admit I was confused by the use of "Linux Mint" to refer both to the full system I normally boot and also to the one on the "live" USB stick. I am now familiarizing myself and gaining confidence before I proceed further, as you kinldy suggested, by following Lord dolla...

Re: From Dual OS to Single OS

tgwilt: Your encouragement is appreciated. I do not wish to install a new Linux Mint; only to keep what I now have on ext4 partition. Thanks!
