Re: EXTERNAL HDD Activity Light blinks even after copying complete
If the transfer rate is 30MB/s, at 500G you'd be waiting 4.6 hours! If my calculation is correct, that is ... let me try that again: 500GB / 30MBps = 16666.6667 seconds 16666.6667 seconds / 3600 seconds/hr = 4.6296 hours If you only do this once, then that's the wait time. If you plan to repeatedly...

Re: EXTERNAL HDD Activity Light blinks even after copying complete
Will try this. Looks ok to try. Though will check the man pages or info pages for any possible side effects of these settings on other operations other programs before I actually try out.

Re: EXTERNAL HDD Activity Light blinks even after copying complete
Please don't use ALL CAPS, it's in the forum rules. Corrected ... did not check while posting There are tools to accomplish what you want to do that work in the background, BackinTime is one of them. Here I am actually not looking for a backup tool but just wanna copy my full home directory to an e...

Re: EXTERNAL HDD Activity Light blinks even after copying complete
TL;DR this is cash values from the 90s in percentage that don't make sense causing your files to fill the RAM first and appear finished when they are in fact still writing to the disk. (those should have changed long ago...) Long Version: this is a problem with a thing called "dirty bytes"...

EXTERNAL HDD Activity Light blinks even after copying complete
I am using Linux Mint 20 with ext4 filesystem. I am copying data to my external HDD formatted with NTFS. Even after finishing copying, the activity light of the external HDD keeps on blinking for a long time. Want to know why is this happening? Also it does not unmount till the light goes off. But i...

[SOLVED] Linux Base issue in Linuxmint 20
I have upgraded to Linuxmint 20 from 19.3 using the instructions provided on the Mint Blog for upgrading.
But as shown in the screenshot the linux base version shows 4.5ubuntu3.1 ...
Is this correct? Or should it be 5.4?

Low Latency Kernel and Software Development
Would generic or low latency kernel be the right choice for a typical Software Development Desktop or Laptop machine? Typically a Java Web Developer would use an IDE, A Tomcat Server and a Database like Apache Derby in Network Server mode or My Sql or Postgres on his/her local machine Similarly a mo...

Re: Xanmod LTS on Linuxmint Desktop and Schedutil CPU Governor
Recommend to try out this combination. I suppose you're going to be around 24x7 to help everyone who follows your advice to fix any issues when they post here. The very first piece of advice given to anyone who does that is to revert to a supported kernel. Those of us who do give their free time to...

Re: Kernel recompile
I'm afraid you're really in over your head here and I hope you have the sense to do a system backup before trying anthing like this. Or, better, ask a proper support question. Well asking and doing it are two different things. Secondly, I believe there is open permission by the Forum administrators...

Re: Kernel recompile
How to do it? Without your own research, experimentation and learning, with exceedingly great difficulty. There is no CONFIG_HZ_400 in the kernel .config, and the values that are there have been optimised over many years of testing. I actually want to only set the CONFIG_HZ options but leave rest a...

Re: LMDE4 life and support
LMDE 4 is quite stable and very close to Linuxmint feel.
It would really be great to have a LMDE 4 Mate.

Re: LMDE4 life and support
The short answer: to be decided. It's not known yet. It will most likely at minimum be supported for a few months until after an eventual LMDE 5 release to allow users time to do their upgrade, just as was the case for LMDE 3. LMDE has a small userbase but it is important to Linux Mint. See this bl...

Re: LMDE4 life and support
I can understand you want 5+ years of support but it may not get that. If it doesn't get extended support you could still continue to use it if you can accept Linux Mint developed software and maintained packages (http://packages.linuxmint.com/) no longer get updates. It then mostly comes down to r...

Re: LMDE4 life and support
Me or anyone would be fine with upgrading LMDE4 to LMDE5 as long as its seamless without any hiccups ... Just as I seamlessly updated from 19.3 to 20.0 Linuxmint Mate 5 years of support is of course utmost desirable just like Linuxmint for peace of mind. But so long as the upgrades are seamless thou...

Re: LMDE 3 to reach EOL (End-Of-Life) on July 1st
LMDE 4 is indeed a semi-rolling release: you get new releases of Linux Mint developed software such as Cinnamon, Mint tools and X apps as regular updates through Update Manager and you get new releases of programs installed as Flatpaks automatically, but for packages installed from the Debian packa...

Kernel recompile
I have Linuxmint 19.3 installed running kernel 5.4.0-48-generic I want to recompile the kernel to set CONFIG_HZ at 400 How to do it? Also how to use the file /boot/config-5.4.0-48-generic as the config file? Should this file be used or a new one generated? I actually want to only set the CONFIG_HZ o...
