Re: Couple of questions from a total newbie coming from Vista...

The volume on my G17 works perfectly in Mint 7, to answer that question.

Re: No sound in Amarok, other sounds are fine

Hm... a few other people have complained about similar things with Gloria, but I haven't seen a solution yet. Do formats other than MP3s work? Also, do you have a Creative sound card? Linux sometimes takes issue with them...

Re: No sound in Amarok, other sounds are fine

Is there just no sound, or does it complain about not being able to access a device or something? If another program is running that uses sound, it might block Amarok's access to it. I don't really use amarok, but is there something in the preferences about what kind of sound driver (OSS, ALSA, etc)...

European Union Open Source Strategy

Ok, this is a kinda old article, not to mention a controversial one, but after a few searches of the forum I couldn't see that it had been posted before, so here goes: http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/how-hijack-eu-open-source-strategy-paper I could rant horrendous for hours about this, but I thi...

"Because I'd rather use a mac..."

From an ex of mine, heh. (of course, deep in it's heart MacOS is an illegitimate child of Linux :P)

Potential Software portal "bug"

I don't know if it's just me or not, but the review section of the software portal appears broken:

Re: Nvidia control panel won't write to /etc/x11/xorg.conf

Right click on the mint menu button and choose "edit menu" Under Administration click on the Nvidia icon and choose properties In the "command" line, change "/usr/bin/nvidia-settings" to "sudo /usr/bin/nvidia-settings" That will make it so you don't have to use the command line interface every time...

Re: You know you're a Linux Mint user (Minter/Mintress) when...

-Whenever you hear Ubuntu you think Mint -Whenever a computer is completely f***ed up and deserves to be reformatted and didn't have Mint installed on it, you install Mint. :D -It's the best distro you have tried so far. 8) -You see MINTUPDATES as a good thing rather than a bad thing like cough cou...

Re: Nvidia control panel won't write to /etc/x11/xorg.conf

Just the one session, and that would get old fast, heh. You could change the permissions, but it's generally considered a bad idea for security and stability reasons. I don't personally know of any consequences good or bad of doing it. I'm not sure how much it'd help the convenience factor, but if y...

Re: Nvidia control panel won't write to /etc/x11/xorg.conf

Go into a terminal and type "sudo nvidia-settings" and then type your password. "Sudo" runs the command in super-user mode and will give the program permission to write the file.

Re: Mint 7: Nautilus browser mode?

Thanks for the reply. I was more wondering how to access the option itself; I know what the modes are and that's why I'm trying to change it. ;) EDIT: I've tried deselecting "open in browser windows" and that just opens them in windows that don't have any "decorations." I have no idea why I'm findin...

Mint 7: Nautilus browser mode?

I think I'm missing something, but I can't seem to find where to switch between spatial and browser mode in Gloria, since it's not under MintDesktop or edit->prefrences in nautilus. Could someone point me in that direction please?

Helena gets my vote. It fits the theme of the other names and it works when you say them in order, to me at least.

Re: How did you come up with your user name?

Anyone played Final Fantasy 4 recently? There's an item the main character uses at the beginning of the game called Lit-Bolt, which is basically a lightning spell. I saw no reason for the hyphen, and "lightning bolt" rarely fitted on forms at the time. It was also during the whole Pokemon craze, and...

Re: Some video resolution questions

I had a similar annoyance with resolution. The XFCE manager seemed convinced my card was only capable of 1024X768 @51hz for some reason. My personal experience didn't involve EnvyNG, as I'd found that the newest nVidia drivers didn't work whereas the previous one did. Can't remember the version numb...
