Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

New people who give up on Linux don't understand the meaning of "don't look a gift horse in the mouth"

Re: Software as a Service is Dangerous

Yes SaaS is dangerous for a variety of reasons, but it's good business. Besides being closed-source, their data isn't even owned by the customer in a SaaS. I'm happy with the open source community that provides all the software I need. As they say on channel four: > You will own nothing > You will ...

Re: Predictions 2021

I predict that this thread will be locked or torched before the end of January unless everyone keeps talking in code . I predict that even more censorship of information on the internet will continue. I predict that those who are awake have an uphill battle as we become less and less able to exchan...

That woke up some parts of the brain that were put to out to pasture long ago. What did they call those balls attached to the string ? IIRC we called them kerbangers but apparently they had different names in different places : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clackers Lethal weapons in the wrong hand...

Re: youtube-dl removed from GitHub

Seems like another victory for censorship. Not unsympathetic to the recording industry but it just seems like a convenient excuse to try to stop people from downloading videos with alternative information of the pandemic before Youtube deletes them , often within hours of being uploaded. They have b...

Re: Understanding EFI, GRUB and all that jazz

I just can talk about the M$ PC world. Since a bios can be locked down as far as the hardware vendor chooses you have to see what your bios allows. I tried to boot from 2 different I3 win 7 laptops but both, no matter what setting, refused to boot from the linux life usb. An older one had no proble...

Re: Understanding EFI, GRUB and all that jazz

I was running 18.3 Mate and then removed and replaced hard drive and installed 19.3 Mate. It installed itself with UEFI partition unlike 18.3 which was legacy. Later reinstalled 18.3 hard drive along side 19.3 disk and had to go into BIOS and select the 18.3 drive to boot. All good , booted to 18.3....

The BBC article did print the Privacy International response at the bottom of the article and their worry is well founded. https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-54106863

Re: Snowden criticises Amazon for hiring former NSA boss

This practice is as common as dog poop. Hate to use Wikipedia as a reference but here it is : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revolving_door_(politics) Very well covered by alternative media for years but only tin foil hat wearing conspiracy theorists get their news from those places. This being the a...

Re: [SOLVED] Calculation question (probably simple, but I'm bad at it)

I think the point is that you have to keep using your diluting percentage and apply it to both new and used fluid ratio at each step.

Re: [SOLVED] Calculation question (probably simple, but I'm bad at it)

I have always wanted to know but was too lazy to try to figure it out... until now. Never been able to figure out the slide ruler thing. I used 25% and 1000ml for simplicity How much new fluid does it take to replace old fluid of 1000ml capacity if only able to remove and refill 250ml at a time ? 1 ...

Re: Computer refuses to work with normal microphone

I couldn't find anything in BIOS but in 8200 manual I found this paragraph : 10 Audio Subsystem These systems use the integrated High Definition audio controller of the chipset and the Realtek ADL261 High Definition audio codec. HD audio provides enhanced audio performance with higher sampling rates...

Re: Computer refuses to work with normal microphone

Maybe this will help. I recall reading that Audio output can be changed in BIOS I think . I mean to say that audio and microphone jacks can be reconfigured in BIOS. I have the Small form factor and use the rear as the speaker output. I will have a look in BIOS to see and post if I find something htt...
