Re: Dell e514dw mfp

I expected a reply like that. You asked if I'd edited a program I'd never seen. How would I know it had to be edited? Telling someone trying to learn that this is very very easy, just follow instructions doesn't provide any understanding. Since I want to understand what I'm doing, I will look elsewh...

Re: Dell e514dw mfp

You have (it seems) glossed over the fact I'm new. What more is there to be said?
Attitude, maybe? I think I'll have to look elsewhere or simply figure this out myself.

Re: Dell e514dw mfp

No success yet, but I haven't been working at this. I just got to wondering was I missing something, having come across something about sharing a Windows printer with Samba. I did check the printer & AirPrint is on. I downloaded the Dell zipped file which unzipped to 4 files: e514dwcupswrapper-3.2.0...

Re: Dell e514dw mfp

Brian, you've been patient, thanks. Another question I just thought of: Does setting up my printer for Linux affect the set up for Windows -- will computers running Windows still be able to print using existing installed drivers etc? This is an "I don't really know what I'm doing & don't want to mak...

Re: Best Linux OS for older devices

An old laptop might weigh 3 kg, considered portable at one time. Yet another disadvantage even if the computer is free.

Re: When did you come to Linux?

The 32 GB drive isn't a problem despite being so tiny by today's standards. There's only 2 GB RAM & a 1.6 GHz Celeron. I did add a 64 GB SD card but haven't needed it yet - mostly because I haven't been able to get printing set up despite the advice I've been getting here. Newer Dell 11's have same ...

Re: Dell e514dw mfp

Yes, I attempted the Debian CUPS to connect the printer, using a USB connection - get it working then establish a wireless connection, right?
I tried both Dell & generic drivers with no success. The printer is currently offline due to moving issues, so will continue when I can.

Re: Dell e514dw mfp

No, I haven't been at this - too many other things to do having recently moved. It isn't that I'm ignoring information given; I appreciate it. What's simple for many of you is completely new to me. I'll check the Dell article. You've all convinced me this printer will eventually be working with Mint...

Re: Dell e514dw mfp

An update & more information - the Dell driver installation doesn't want to search where the driver that might work is located. Perhaps it doesn't recognize it? CUPS might/should work - the printer is c. 2015 & an old Consumer Reports review says it's compatible with Linux - but no further informati...

Re: When did you come to Linux?

I switched a couple of weeks ago because a tiny lightweight, perfect for travel Dell with only 32GB was sitting useless due to Win10 updates. Now there's 14 GB free & the computer is working, probably better than new. So far only problem has been connecting to Dell wireless MFP. This makes me reluct...
