Can bash be used for stuff like this?

I'm kinda new to bash, when I was still on Windows I used Autohotkey to automate shit.

For example, I had a script that if I pressed CTL + 1, it would push the F5 key every 5 seconds, and if I pressed CTRL + 2 it would stop.

Can that be done in bash? Or would I need to use python?

Re: What's the best way to copy a large amount of data?

I first tried to copy everything from the terminal by doing cp -r * /targetdirectory/, because I'm trying to learn terminal stuff. But my issue with that was that I couldn't see the progress. For future reference, one way you can do that is to add the "v" tag (verbose), so cp -rv /source/ /target/ ...

[Solved] Renaming many files at once?

So I have a folder of TV episodes that I want to rename. Right now the format of the names is: [Uploader_Name] TV Show 01, same thing for every episode with just a different number at the end. I want the format to be: TV Show - 01 - Episode name Is that possible? Or is it possible to do at least the...

Re: Question about executing a script

Hmm yeah to be honest I had my doubts as well as I keep running into trouble and I feel like it isn't clearly explained what I'm supposed to do. I'll try some alternatives tomorrow

Question about executing a script

So I'm trying to learn the command line, and so as is usual when learning a new language I started with the Hello World bash script. I've been following the guide on this website: http://www.linuxcommand.org/lc3_wss0010.php At the bottom of that page it talks about the bin directory and how if you m...

Re: What's the best way to copy a large amount of data?

You guys were right, I was a bit too impatient haha. I first tried to copy everything from the terminal by doing cp -r * /targetdirectory/, because I'm trying to learn terminal stuff. But my issue with that was that I couldn't see the progress. So then I did it the old fashioned way instead.

[Solved] What's the best way to copy a large amount of data?

I've got a little over 1 TB of data I need to copy from an external hard disk to an internal hard disk. I tried just dragging and dropping, but it's been at 12% for a while now and I feel like it's stuck.

Re: Changed my keyboard layout, now I can't type my password anymore

Escape worked. First I pressed it rapidly right after turning on the computer, then I got a sort of boot menu where I could choose the boot device. Then I pressed Esc to close that menu and Esc again right away and that got me into Grub. Kind of odd. But hey, it works. Now back to googling how to ch...

[Solved]Changed my keyboard layout, now I can't type my password anymore

So I changed my keyboard layout to US International and now I can't type my password anymore so I can't unlock my PC. My password has a ^ in it and now after some googling I found out apparently you can't type that character with a US International layout. At least, I think that's the issue. Either ...

Re: Can't change resolution after selecting Nvidia driver

So... I figured it out. After doing some more research I found out the driver doesn't initialize if Secure Boot is enabled. I'd read about Secure Boot before, but I thought this was something exclusive to Windows 8 machines. I decided to check anyways and sure enough, it was enabled. Disabled it, re...

Re: Can't change resolution after selecting Nvidia driver

I found the Nvidia settings, but now how do I change the resolution? I don't really know what to do here. I can add rules or make a new profile and add keys to it, but I don't really understand what that is.

[Solved]Can't change resolution after selecting Nvidia driver

So I installed Linux Mint, went through the starting guide, checked my drivers... The Nouveau driver was selected but the Nvidia driver said recommended next to it so I selected that, then restarted. Then when I boot up again I get a message that it's running in software mode and Cinnamon is running...
