Re: How do you feel about the GPL and "copyleft"?

Imagine you want to build an awesome lego car with a garage to hold it in and a house next to the garage. someone says "hey, I started on making a car, you can use it if you want... we can share it" you then build on that car into what you like and build some more... then all of a sudden that person...

Re: How do you feel about the GPL and "copyleft"?

linux would certainly exist without the GPL. It could use a license similar to BSD. Linux would exist without copyright (although it might still be called 'unix' or instead have many names: blevex, fredix) BSD is more free to me. To me what the BSD license says is "don't plagiarise." Don't call what...

How do you feel about the GPL and "copyleft"?

What's with being forced to share?

copyleft falls off the horse too (on the other side.)

unetbootin sucks

Thought I'd use this forum to air my frustration. clearly the program doesn't suck, it just has a bad "user module". I don't know exactly how the program works but I do know that it seems to trick the computer into thinking the usb drive is a cd. Everytime I put the usb drive into the computer (unde...

Re: Belkin N (ra2860) limited to g speeds

Thanks technogeek, I had heard of one g device bringing down an n network to g speeds. Actually I first heard of it with b/g mode, but that hasn't happened to me. Even now I have a b/g/n network with one computer at 54Mbps and when I add my sister's netbook it'll connect at 65 or 100Mbps (I'm assumi...

oh absolutely it's an N router and I know it's working because I was able to get 100mBit/s on a windows machine (different device) and also with a netbook.

Re: Belkin N (ra2860) limited to g speeds

Nevertheless, it's the principle of the thing. I wanted wireless n, that's why I bought the card. I already had g built into the laptop, ya know?

Re: Belkin N (ra2860) limited to g speeds

No, but that would be slick to have such a fast internet connection. I'm referring to my own home network and the connection to that. I can stream HD content from computer to computer if I can get the speed up. and 54Mbit/s is the limit on g; 300Mbit/s is the limit on n, which is faster than "fast-e...

Belkin N (ra2860) limited to g speeds

Hi Everybody! I recently got a new PCMCIA card for my laptop. Belkin wireless N adapter. It was probably the easiest thing I have ever set up on linux as I didn't have to do a thing! I typed iwconfig and found out it was "ra0" then I typed "ra0" into wicd (I'm on Gloria XFCE) and that was that. But ...

Re: A few things to take from Windows 7 & Windows Home Server...

"allowed" to charge? Microsoft can charge 200 bucks because people pay 200 bucks. I guess we should say if Microsoft was an alcoholic then the customers are all "enabling" Microsoft. If we all stop buying their products they'll have to lower the price. I'm not sure linux can ever compete with Micros...

Re: VLC loading network files in KDE [SOLVED]

That's creative Darth Wedgie... I'll have to look into doing it that way. What I found (and of course DrHu deserves credit for pointing me in the right direction despite my... "stubbornness") is smb4k does exactly what I wanted. I was reluctant looking into that because I was thinking it would be es...

Re: s/pdif sound doesn't work consistently [SOLVED]

I apologize Husse. I was agreeing with you. I meant ATI wouldn't put the name "intel" on the board or have it pop up as "intel." I trust it is the same thing as you say. Just the branding. (hah, kinda like "moontools" in that e17 OS)

Re: VLC loading network files in KDE

We're miscommunicating a bit DrHu... you don't understand my "problem" because to you there is no "problem". And that's correct because I can play the media fine. I just can't play it how I want to play it with the program I want to play it with... =) If kde dragonplayer works in KDE ce mint main ed...

Re: s/pdif sound doesn't work consistently

Thanks Husse! You're probably right (ATI wouldn't put "intel" on their board...). But I just booted up and it mysteriously works now, which is good because I couldn't figure out why it wasn't working... When I get a chance I'll have to look into getting audio thru HDMI to work. Suppose I'll post her...

Re: VLC loading samba share files in KDE

Thanks for the reply DrHu. And thankyou for the excellent resources. I am interested in learing more about streaming, however: I don't want to "stream" the video. I want to play a file. I mean I know technically it could be considered "streaming" since the data is sent over the network. But from the...

s/pdif sound doesn't work consistently [SOLVED]

I apologize in advance for this question... no sound Gloria KDE RC1 under multimedia system settings. Set to S/PDIF out. (must have advanced-devices checked). Clicked the test button and it worked. I was happy. VLC would play (I set it to S/PDIF out as well) and I thought I was ok to install since t...
