Re: Whatsapp desktop prints a bouble first character on the firts line

It's perfectly sober in the web view! :D Thanks for that, it's a help. I'll use that until they get their act together. It's just annoying when an app from a huge company fails, and it's impossible to get it fixed. What we need is open software, where some genius picks up the bug and fixes it for th...

Re: Whatsapp desktop prints a bouble first character on the firts line

Well, I worked out how to send in a bug report: Click on the 3 dots on the left pane Click on "Settings" Click on "Help" Click on "Contact us" But, for me, it was a monumental waste of time. They asked me to restart the browser (what browser?) and restart the computer -...

Re: Whatsapp desktop prints a bouble first character on the firts line

I have the same problem - it started with a recent update - but I can't find any way of reporting the bug.
Is there a WhatsApp user forum? I saw that this question was asked on Reddit in r/whatsapp, but no-one has responded.

Re: Having some problems when running with nvidia driver

I'll try those steps when I try the nvidia driver again. I must confess I find it hard to investigate problems such as these when my system is working properly otherwise!

In the meantime, I'll mark this thread as solved (even though there's more work to be done).

Thanks for your help.

Re: Having some problems when running with nvidia driver

Well, I am surprised! I've just downloaded Slic3r-1.3.1-dev-92abbc4-x86_64.AppImage and it works in nouveau! Maybe I'd hit a bug discovered by someone else and subsequently fixed. I think that this covers my biggest requirement for now, but I am still annoyed that the nvidia driver is misbehaving. I...

Re: Having some problems when running with nvidia driver

SMG, thanks for your input. Yes, when I say "reboot" I mean a full restart at the login page. I have just tried using a selection of windows compositors - all behave in the same way, barring very minor differences in appearance (as you'd expect). I might try slic3r v1.3.1 - but I don't hol...

[SOLVED - sort-of] Having some problems when running with nvidia driver

This is a tough problem to describe! Symptoms when running the nvidia 450 driver: Sometimes the display boots up to 800x640 instead of the defined 1920 x 1080. Fortunately I can select 'reboot' at the login screen and the system usually comes back at the correct resolution. So there is a work-around...

Re: The sound saga continues! Can I set sound output via command line?

Fair comment - I have been messing around with sound for quite a while so I may well have confused the system.

I will hold that option in reserve... :)

Re: The sound saga continues! Can I set sound output via command line?

Well, it's working, but I don't know why! :D First, I tried your commands and got odd results - the speakers did work but I couldn't get it to go back to headphones. I decided to play a little with the command pacmd set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_01_00.1 output:hdmi-stereo-extra1 While playing ...

Re: The sound saga continues! Can I set sound output via command line?

Another update: I have been trying to sort out the HDMI speaker output. I can get sound if I select "GK107 HDMI Audio Controller" in the Hardware tab of Sound Preferences, together with "HDMI / DisplayPort 2" in the Output tab. However, this leaves me locked into HDMI sound, and ...

Re: The sound saga continues! Can I set sound output via command line?

OK, an update. pacmd set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_00_14.2 output:analog-stereo+input:analog-stereo and pacmd set-sink-port alsa_output.pci-0000_00_14.2.analog-stereo analog-output-headphones do set the system to headphones so that is already a huge bonus. The other command pacmd set-card-prof...

Re: The sound saga continues! Can I set sound output via command line?

Somehow I'd missed your earlier input (or not realised what you'd sent) so I'll give those commands a try. This problem is one task amongst many I have to do day-to-day so my apologies for not paying attention! I may sound frustrated but every time I try something one aspect of the sound works - eit...

Re: The sound saga continues! Can I set sound output via command line?

So it looks like I'm stuck with what I've got for the moment... :(

Never mind - the headphones work, and they're what I use most of the time.

Re: The sound saga continues! Can I set sound output via command line?

OK - I've just managed to make it work to headphones once more, so I'll leave it at that until I get further input from this thread.

Thanks for looking, anyway.

Re: The sound saga continues! Can I set sound output via command line?

Odd - I only ever seem to have 1 sink available at any time - either the analog-stereo or hdmi-stereo. This suggests that I can't use your suggested command.

After messing around for a while I seem to be locked into hdmi-stereo, with poor volume out of the speakers... :(

The sound saga continues! Can I set sound output via command line?

This is an ongoing epic saga... The story so far Originally I was getting frustrated because every time I started my machine it insisted that the sound output went to 'Line Out'. I was either using headphones or external speakers, both of which are connected via headphone sockets (front of PC for he...

Thank you! That now seems to be working. :) Here's the output from that pacmd command: david@linux-desktop:~$ pacmd list-cards 2 card(s) available. index: 0 name: <alsa_card.pci-0000_01_00.1> driver: <module-alsa-card.c> owner module: 7 properties: alsa.card = "1" alsa.card_name = "HD...
