I have the same problem - it started with a recent update - but I can't find any way of reporting the bug.
Is there a WhatsApp user forum? I saw that this question was asked on Reddit in r/whatsapp, but no-one has responded.

I'll try those steps when I try the nvidia driver again. I must confess I find it hard to investigate problems such as these when my system is working properly otherwise!

This is a tough problem to describe! Symptoms when running the nvidia 450 driver: Sometimes the display boots up to 800x640 instead of the defined 1920 x 1080. Odd - I only ever seem to have 1 sink available at any time - either the analog-stereo or hdmi-stereo. This suggests that I can't use your suggested command.

After messing around for a while I seem to be locked into hdmi-stereo, with poor volume out of the speakers...
