Opera is not a snap package and it too, just as Vivaldi, installs using a .deb file downloaded directly from their website and is updated automatically once installed as it adds itself to the repository.
I use Opera as my backup browser in Mint 20. It just updated via the Synaptic PM.

Re: Cherrytree as Snap?

I suspect that running a Flatpak app on a thumb drive could be sluggish and glitchy...and other programs, too, due to the nature of such drives. You should know that I've installed Cherrytree via Flatpak on LM 20, and it works like a charm. FYI, I run Linux off an external SSD card, and it works fla...

Re: Help a noob: mintupgrade errors (LM 19.3 to 20)

@zcot: Thanks for the heads-up! Unfortunately I just found out that CherryTree doesn't support Ubuntu 20.04 yet, so I need to stick with LM 19.3 for now. This upgrade indeed is huge hehe. I need to be more alert! I use Cherrytree also, and the .deb package refused to install. But I found out that i...

No problem except cherrytree which is not compatible with Mint 20.
I discovered that, too, after installing Mint 20 yesterday. But I also discovered it's available via Flatpak. So I pinched my nose and installed Cherrytree that way.

Re: How do I undo my "read only" problem?

Okay, enough of this NTFS nonsense. I just FAT32 reformatted the most important drive (backed up first to another drive of course). Works great again, in Linux. The other two drives I'll do the same, though they are not a priority, as they are storage only for videos and image and ISO backups. But a...

Only one suggestion so far, from Reddit. And it wasn't any help, either:

[SOLVED] How do I undo my "read only" problem?

Here's the problem: Just after installing and trying out Insync (to backup to Google Drive w/o needing Windoze), I found that I could not save one of several text files I use every day to take notes for this and that, because the editor declared "can't save, this file is read only." I couldn't "save...

Re: [SOLVED] Extraneous Files Installed?

Like kmag, you have to keep dragging it around to do any reading. It's inconvenient. Compiz enlarges the entire screen, and makes things much more user friendly. Xzoom is less convenient to use than kmag, anyway...for a magnifier you have to drag around. It's fine for occasional use, just not freque...

Re: Extraneous Files Installed?

Dependencies are a tree, i.e kmag has some dependencies, those packages in turn have their dependencies, etc etc. As this is a KDE app the chain includes a whole bunch of packages that are KDE specific that wouldn't be found in a XFCE, MATE or Cinnamon install. If there were a decent magnifier from...

They are required dependencies.
Already discussed in this thread. I was questioning /why/ they were required...not that I don't understand the concept of "required dependencies." Thanks for your comment, though.

Re: [SOLVED] Extraneous Files Installed?

there's package xzoom which sounds nicer than xmag and has zero dependencies on my light system (most 'x' programs only depend on the same low-level software that every GUI programs needs). If you've read my previous posts in this thread, you'll see I've tried that, and the other magnifiers availab...

Wow, thanks! You certainly know your way around Linux. I will go through your tutorial with a fine-toothed comb, that I may get better at this, myself. I consider my query solved.

Re: Extraneous Files Installed?

Yes, of course. I understand that installing any KDE app will be bundled with some KDE dependencies...and that it might vary from one desktop environment to another. I am not confused about that. But what's up with seemingly unrelated files within that bundle, is what I'm curious about. Like: are th...

Re: Extraneous Files Installed?

Well this is curious, as kmag's list of dependencies on this page does /not/ include the files in question: https://ubuntu.pkgs.org/18.04/ubuntu-universe-amd64/kmag_17.12.3-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb.html BTW, I don't consider my question "solved" yet, as the kmag mystery is still afoot. I did not edit my O...

Re: Extraneous Files Installed?

Are you sure those weren't updates to vlc? And applications No, I do not have VLC installed. Nor kwallet, which dependencies were also included. Unless there's a glitch in Synaptics, the installation package or something else, I find it beyond the pale for one installation to include updates to ano...

Re: Extraneous Files Installed?

The former. Works beautifully...thanks so much! Though I have just looked into Compiz, to see it also has the screen-zoom feature. Now, once I figure out the key commands, I'll see if I'll use that instead. But good to know I can always install Cinammon, just in case. All's well that ends well! UPD...
