Re: AMD HD6970, dual monitors, no independent settings.

The FGLRX that is marked as post release will not install ( it gets errors ) Same here - the driver downloads and compiles, but then I get a nondescript error and instructions to check /var/log/jockey or some such. In reading through /var/log/jockey (a riveting tale of sadness and woe, filled with ...

Sounds to me like the "mirror desktop" button is checked. If that's the case, only one monitor is identified - your main display.

Re: AMD HD6970, dual monitors, no independent settings.

Yes, I'm running the open source driver. I had the exact problem you described - unreadable text with colored noise all over the place (that should be visible in my screenshot above). That was only true for the text within Gnome itself (menus, that task bar thing at the top and bottom) but not the t...

AMD HD6970, dual monitors, no independent settings.

I have an issue (two really) with the AMD drivers on LM12RC. This issue is the same under both the open-source and the proprietary drivers. As a default, dual displays are set to mirror. When trying to set up individual displays, no matter which resolution I choose for my second monitor (even the op...

Not my idea of progress, but I guess that is what many computer users want.... I'm not sure which users that would be. As far as i know, everybody uses a computer to do something - whether it be to play music or movies, do research or work, browse online, check email and stay in touch, and so on. W...

Re: :'(

Well, that's just a minor glitch, I'm sure.

I'd be willing to bet that the developers really earned their keeps this time around, and when you finally get it running, even though your sound and/or video and/or networking might not work right or at all, your windows will wobble quite extraordinarily.

Re: change the kde so they all dn't look and act the same

I highly disagree with the OP that KDE themes all look the same. As dequite pointed out kde-look.org has hundreds of different ones. The original post on this thread follows the Internet Law of Exclamation ( http://rationalwiki.com/wiki/Law_of_exclamation ), so I wouldn't put too much credence in i...

Re: From Windows to Linux

I think both Gnome and KDE are bloated disorganized messes. XFCE, LXDE and similar WMs lack configurability (Who wants to sit and edit XML files by hand, FFS?). IceWM, FVWM, and the other, third-tier, minimalist WMs, while fine for the dedicated hobbyist or the person with way too much time on their...

optimize me, The modprobe command was only used to stop the shut down beep for the current session. For the permanent fix I advised using "echo "blacklist pcspkr " | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf". This works quite well. Right right.. I get that. I'm familiar with b...

Re: Is it a bad sign that Mint ran a "drive check" when booting?

I posted with a similar question here a while back. Because I'm on a dual-boot laptop and frequently reboot, I find myself having to sit through fsck at least once every couple days. If any interested parties care to search my posts, I believe it was Fred who provided me with a quick primer on the t...

I'm not sure I've ever seen modprobe -r used to remove a module.. I've always seen the rmmod command used for that purpose. Maybe OP will have better luck using rmmod?

Where are you finding those files? In your home dir? Somewhere else?

It's been a while since I had to use it so I could be wrong, but aren't .fr-XXXX files from PhotoRec? Have you tried to recover any deleted files lately?

Wel, yeah, I know what localhost is. The part I don't understand is why you'd try to open a secure, encrypted shell on the computer you're sitting in front of. I use SSH and VNC extensively on my home network. Using RSA & DSA authentication, hosts files, and proper configuration I have secure an...
