Re: Why are boot & shutdown so much faster than Windows 10?

Thanks for all those replies. I apparently have some problems with my Windows 10 machines. Even though I've looked at all the programs that load upon startup and eliminated all but a few favourites, my boot time is on the order of going out for a smoke. Really, maybe 5 minutes. The desktop may show ...

Why are boot & shutdown so much faster than Windows 10?

I've almost stopped using my Windows 10 laptop because my new Linux Mint machine boots and shuts down so quickly in comparison. Why is it so much more efficient that way than Windows 10?

Should I update everything on the Update Manager list?

I'm new to Linux Mint. Firefox told me I need to update it for security reasons, so I clicked on Update Manager and got a list of about 140 items. Should I select them all and update everything? I scrolled down the list checking Firefox, Bash, Linux kernel, LibreOffice, and a few other things that I...

What use is learning the command line for someone new to Linux?

I recently deleted Windows 10 from a laptop, installed Linux Mint (which I like — especially how much faster it boots), and started to learn the command line. It's interesting, and I understand that it's considered part of being a Linux novice, but as I work through the commands and the scripting la...

Re: did Linux Mint 19 install trash my Dell Inspiron?

Hooray! Thank you! It took several attempts -- for some reason, even though I tried to change the booting to UEFI, it didn't stick. It continued with Legacy. After 3-4 tries and no improvement, I did a fresh install of Linux Mint. That fixed things, the install was successful, and when I checked, th...

Re: did Linux Mint 19 install trash my Dell Inspiron?

... Dell takes over with something they call SupportAssist which offers to check the hardware. It found no hardware problem. You didn't answer my question about whether <F12> produces a list of boot options. If so, what are they? In any case, If your system is unable to find and boot any operating ...

Re: did Linux Mint 19 install trash my Dell Inspiron?

I can't believe you're suggesting this is sheer coincidence. Total nonsense. As for that "far more likely" hardware failure, Dell takes over with something they call SupportAssist which offers to check the hardware. It found no hardware problem. Vent your spleen elsewhere, child. Sorry. Let the fru...

Re: did Linux Mint 19 install trash my Dell Inspiron?

OK, so at the moment I am in with Linux Live from a USB stick. So, it's not a brick after all. If you want to fix this, open Terminal, run inxi -Fxz and post the output here. If you just want to restore the system as it was (removing Linux), take a look at the link I gave above. That's actually the...

Re: did Linux Mint 19 install trash my Dell Inspiron?

that's not an good outcome - but YES - there are risks, when installing another system. :!: can you now boot that Live LinuxMint Media - again: - from the Menu - Accessories - Disks and copy an screen_shot of what that Disks program is showing your current HDD layout as ? - back here - on your repl...

Re: did Linux Mint 19 install trash my Dell Inspiron?

My computer seems to have become a brick. It's highly unlikely to be anything other than sheer coincidence, and far more likely to be a hardware failure. After trying out other valid suggestions to recover a bootable system, you can try to update the BIOS. If the machine is new, wipe the disk entir...

[SOLVED] D id Linux Mint 19 install trash my Dell Inspiron?

Linux Mint seemed to install OK on my Dell Inspiron II 3800 laptop, but then it asked if I wanted to reboot. When I did, Dell gave an error message saying that the computer had failed to start. Whether I then pressed Escape to abort, or F2 to enter setup, or allowed a scan of the computer, the compu...
