Re: [SOLVED] - KVM/QEMU - Virtual network won't start - can't install

I haven't played around with that yet (sorry).

BUT, that process apparently created the bridge and set it up through the virt-manager application.

Right now that computer is in pieces, so first chance I get I'll hook it back up and get you the config files

Re: runas and switch user

Thanks. Login as root?? heck no. I have 1 admin account on the system and 3 standard user accounts. The std user accounts don't have sudo access, only the admin does.. But whilst the system is chugging away on the new HDDs, I still have to get other work done. If I had a spare desktop I'd use that o...

[SOLVED] runas and switch user

Hi Folks, I'll be testing some hard drives (badblocks - which will take quite a while - days really) and I'll still need to be able to run some of my other software (accounting, some java apps) which are installed under another user account. Is there a "runas <other user> like I know there is in win...

Re: [Solved] Mini computers for Large Screens TV

While Bit Chute may be all fine and well, when contracted as a term the first part forms a letter combination the local robo-moderation triggers on... [EDIT] In fact looking at it I do believe I want to remark to myself find Bit Chute in fact likely not all fine and well, even non-contracted. But a...

Re: [Solved] Mini computers for Large Screens TV

For some reason the word "B i t c h u t e" (without the spaces) in my post above got turned "princess" when I looked at the text here in the forum. Even though when I went into the editor to correct it it showed the correct word.

Not sure what's going on...

Re: Mini computers for Large Screens TV

The discussed MINIX NEO Z83-4U is a full computer. Yep. And as a result of your suggestion, it's now on my research list. Thank you for that. My bad. The comment on "full computer" referred to "getting away from computers". Going to my recliner allows me to take strain off my back injury while doin...

Re: Mini computers for Large Screens TV

Hi, Sounds like an interesting project. Could you just revoke it's router access. I don't know as haven't got a smart telly. Sounds too simple. Purely disabling the internet is easy - I don't use the built in wifi - I've an old linksys plugged in (acting as a repeater anyway) and the tv plugs into ...

[Solved] Mini computers for Large Screens TV

Hi Folks, I'm looking to give my "Smart TV" (Samsung 65 inch) a lobotomy by disabling all of it's internet features. Too much craptitude seems to be going on in the background. With that thought in mind I figured the best way to do this is set up a small (mini) PC running linux, wireless keyboard an...

Re: Is it possible to change to Mate from Cinnamon desktop?

While I can't give timing, I have 2 computers. 1 is an i3-2120 dell vostro with 8gb ram and a low end ssd (mushkin source 256); the other is (homebrew) an i7-3770k with 32gb ram and WD black HDD (7200rpm). Regardless of os (win 7 or linux) the i3 is lightning compared to the i7. If I swap the ssd on...

Re: Mint 19.3 software versions

Thanks deepakdeshp. I appreciate the reminder. I suppose I should also check out the mdadm site and actually see what the current version *is* too. For all I know we're already running the latest version. I'm just planning on running several different distros from bare metal all talking to the same ...

[SOLVED] Mint 19.3 software versions

Hi Folks, Is there a list anywhere of what software versions are included in a Mint update? For instance, over the next week or so I hope to ( finally  ) get my raid setup working. Since I've been told mdadm versions can be tricky (especially when used with different distros) I figured I'd che...

Also check with you local college. They often have a "surplus" store where you can buy all sorts of stuff for super cheap. Here in AZ we have the ASU surplus Store where I've picked up everything from computers & parts to furniture.

Re: Physical Hard Drive Switch?

That USB switch thingy is neat. I'll have to check that out. Which also made me think of exactly what many others have said - Drive Caddies. I've seen them for SSDs and HDDs. Back in the day when I was doing IT we used to use them all the time (I think the brand then was ICY Dock). But a quick check...

Re: Physical Hard Drive Switch?

This is why I use Terabyte Unlimited ( https://www.terabyteunlimited.com/ ) I've been using this since 2004/2005 Their boot manager is awesome. Every OS I have win and linux thinks it's the only OS on the drive. I'm NOT a shill it's just an awesome product. It will literally do exactly what you want

Re: Mounting external drive as "local" in VM

Here's an even dumber question... If that's the app you're going to use...will it run under WINE? Just a thought While I do appreciate the advice, it is not pertinent to what I'm doing. I am using a specialized tool written to backup all user data for either transfer to another machine or a new hard...

This may be a dumb question...

Have you tried mapping a drive letter to your "network" drive?
