Re: Advice needed: Calendar/Contacts

Thanks guys. I should have been more clear in my original post. I'm looking for a self hosted system. I'm doing everything and anything to completely de-google/de-microsoft etc. I use pCloud instead of Dropbox/GoogleDrive/OneDrive/ etc. but they don't snoop. I'll deal with my hosting company as a ne...

Advice needed: Calendar/Contacts

Hi Folks, Because Verizon is changing things in my area I'm having to buy 2 new phones. This is bad because I was waiting for the Librem 5 to be ready :( It's good because it forces me off my rear to finally get away from my ancient iPhones and hotmail for calendar and contacts. Since I'm now lookin...

Re: Cinnamon and Mate advantages over XFCE

FWIW, I have an older desktop (Dell Vostro 260s) running a i3-2120  with the The only upgrades I've done is go from 4 to 8 gb ram (the dell uses the built in intel video) back when still running win7 on it and added a ssd (mushkin). I've had no problems running anything on it - win 7, cinna...

Re: cleaning up PCs to be donated to my church

If you really need 32bit support I personally would recommend using a distro that will support it for a while going forward. And in that case something like MX may be a better option (it has great documentation and a friendly forum as well). Of course there is also LMDE PS: I do something very simil...

Re: download images from iphone

I currently have an iPhone 5s and I have been able to get my pictures from the phone. I'm using Mint 19.2 on this build. Steps I follow: Plug in phone and no response. Unlock phone, unplug and replug and get a response - it connects and I see it appear in nemo but can't do anything with it. unplug a...

Re: Solved: (at least for me) Mint on 2GB RAM is slow, what's the best alternative?

There's always MX and Antix.

I've got both of them running just fine on older (xp era) hardware. In fact, your netbook is more powerful than those older laptops (1GB ram, 32bit cpu) I rescued

Obviously there's also puppy - which I'll be installing on my 2001 era laptop with 512MB of ram...

Re: [Solved] External HDD issue

If all you're using it for is timeshift, just get a decent sized flashdrive, or even a cheap ssd (personally I like Mushkin for this poweredbymushkin.com ) if you have the room in the machine. My stepmom's laptop actually had a 32gb msata drive that windows wasn't using for anything. Once I switched...

Re: Dual Boot or Virtual Machine for adding Windows 10 to Min 20?

These will probably be OEM licences = not transferrable. But have a go, the licence key is normally stuck on the PC somewhere or you can extract it from win (google it) - worth a shot. They almost certainly are oem lic. where the actual lic code is embedded into the bios (not the one on the sticker...

Re: Dual Boot or Virtual Machine for adding Windows 10 to Min 20?

Like RIH said. One thing to consider is HOW you are going to run the vm program. Are you planning on running both linux and windows programs alongside each other? Or will you primarily be focussed on one or the other? For example I can't imagine playing most games while I'm also working on a spreads...

Re: Dual Boot or Virtual Machine for adding Windows 10 to Min 20?

ajgringo619 definitely gave good advice. Part of the question you may want to answer is how far down the linux "penguin hole" you want to go. Messing around with qemu-kvm taught me a LOT. To the point where I prefer that to VB. But many of my friends prefer VB. <shrug> Regardless, unless have multip...

[SOLVED] VM + Trim

Hi Folks, So I'm setting up some VMS (various linux, bsd, and win) and the thought occurs to me that I'll have the vms sitting on a SSD. Normally all of these would see the SSD and enable trim. Do I need to explicitly disable trim inside the vm because my primary mint install handles it? Do I need t...

Re: How to improve gpu usage on qemu?

Install xfburn (from the software manager) You can then create a "cd" selecting files and folders. Start by creating a "new data composition". This will let you select files and folders like you do in windows. When done, in the lower right corner you'll see "proceed to burn". When you do that the LA...

Re: Qemu, warning: host doesn't support requested feature

While your task well exceeds my skill level with qemu, what I would do as a troubleshooting step (given the level of nested vms) is do a clean install of LM onto bare metal (if possible) and then see if you can set up what you want.

Then virtualize that install (p2v) and work from there
