Re: Firefox now no longer loads for me

Hi L2, it could be the profiles you're using or it could be firefox itself. Open terminal and run the FF profile manager: firefox -profilemanager user@comp:~$ firefox -profilemanager If a screen pops up with a selection box on the right and 2 checkboxes below that then it likely isn't firefox itself...

Re: [SOLVED] LUKS, multi user, & mount issues

Update: Further experimenting seems to indicate that making my std desktop user (as opposed to the admin account) a member of the sudo group dramatically dropped the number of passwords I needed to type. Less than ideal as I wanted only the 1 account to have any elevated privileges. But it's somethi...

Re: LUKS, multi user, & mount issues

I must've typed something wrong, because that seems to have solved it. I'll admit it's a little annoying to have to type like 12 passwords (admin, root, luks) to get it running, but that's a fairly minor one. The security benefit is worth it (compared to having it mount automatically). I'll have to ...

Re: LUKS, multi user, & mount issues

Thanks Welcome, I saw your post about that issue in another thread (bookmarked it actually). And I thought I had tried what you were just saying. <shrug> I'll try it again. Typically I create a custom group for everyone (all 3 of me, myself, and I) on the machine before I do anything else "daus...

[SOLVED] LUKS, multi user, & mount issues

I'm sure this is one of those dumb and annoying permission issues ::me shakes head:: Now that I'm much more comfortable with linux (though a long way to go before I could say I know it like I know Win or even DOS) I've decided to take security much more seriously and fully encrypt the data dr...

Re: [Solved] Thunar Custom Action sha256 not working

I likely will (limit it). I just wanted to experiment. I've decided to set up my 3 computers (home, office, laptop) each with a different version of mint to experiment. and just noticed what is likely a very old feature of thunar.

Thanks again

Re: Thunar Custom Action sha256 not working

That's exactly it. It wasn't showing at all. And I just figured it out thanks to the hint about that file. Solved I just checked all the boxes and left it at that. However: <patterns>*</patterns> <directories/> <audio-files/> <image-files/> <other-files/> <text-files/> <video-files/> is what's in th...

[Solved] Thunar Custom Action sha256 not working

Hi Folks, Just playing around with LM xfce (ver 20.1) and saw the "custom actions" on the context menu. One of the options is to generate an sha256 check. So I created a simple text file (mint system report) and ran it. Nothing happens. I run the same command from the terminal it works. An...

Re: [SOLVED] Speed of copying to external HDD

Couple more thoughts came to mind on seeing your system specs...

create a ramdrive (with 128gb you've got room, esp. for a temporary test), copy from internal to ram, then ram to external HDD
repeat for an external nvme in usb adapter

Re: [SOLVED] Speed of copying to external HDD

Other issues are directly related to the drives you are using as well. CMR vs SMR, age, etc. Really your best way to tell is get a couple high end SATA 3 SSDs (2.5 inch) with large SLC caches and stay within the cache size. Or go NVME on the MB to NVME in a high end usb adapter. Use the same drive i...

[SOLVED] Grand Unified Install Theory...

I'm in the middle of doing some fresh installs from 19 to the latest 20.1 And (naturally) I need all 4 versions of mint (lmde + all 3 desktops) for the 4 computers. Is there a (relatively) easy way to get them all onto 1 usb? So I don't need to have 4 usb sticks laying around? I know that there are ...

Linux Mint Sponsor: Think Penguin Question

Hi Folks, Has anyone purchased anything from one of our sponsors "Think Penguin"? https://www.thinkpenguin.com/ A friend needs a new laptop and I'm considering buying one from Chris over there rather than me going to big box store or ordering a dell or something else. Especially since then...

Re: are POST messages stored anywhere?

One option you*might* want to consider (as someone who has an older system like me) is to go into the configure screens to increase the time lag before the os starts. On my MB I've got 2 network ports (2 different types - an intel 82574L and an intel 82579L). Both give me the option to configure the...

Re: Managing archived email on local system

FWIW, the solution I'm thinking about using is create a virtual machine and install a lightweight mail server (no idea which one). It won't have internet access, but I can then just move my archive into the imap system there. And since it's imap it really won't care what client I'm using. Naybe this...

Re: Linux Mint 20.1 “Ulyssa” Cinnamon – BETA Release

Really hope there's still enough power in a 2010 macbook pro to decently run 20.1 (and Hypnotix). The more bugs and nasties are squashed before i try the better, i'm going to sit waiting for the official release as long as i needs 8) But regardless 20.1 is a serious candidate replacing the last bas...

Re: Managing archived email on local system

Yes, you are right. But the goal was to work with the files outside of the .thunderbird folder. Gotcha. I missed that. Why not just create a separate thunderbird profile then? You don't have to connect to the internet and you actually can have multiple profiles running simultaneously. It may not be...
