Re: Hard drives for archiving

Not a scientific reply. I'm also a fan of doing HDD backups via docking stations. Among my drives are a couple truly ancient, one from 2009 the other 2005 are each used monthly. Even though the docking stations are USB I never hot swap. Always powered down when loading or unloading. What are your s...

Re: Setting up NordVPN

Here is a link to NordVPN tutorial, connection via network manager is about halfway down and based on Cinnamon? but is similar to Mate: https://nordvpn.com/tutorials/linux/openvpn/ Thanks. Being hard headed I was making assumptions, wrong assumptions. Rereading and going slower step by step made th...

Re: Setting up NordVPN

"With Mate, right click on Network Manager at lower right corner, select edit connection, click + icon at lower left corner, "

Except as noted: "The connections icon in the panel does absolutely nothing when I try to "add a VPN connection"

Setting up NordVPN (Solved)

Took the plunge and have activated a NordVPN account. Would now like to setup properly so I can activate or deactivate when desired. Can someone please recommend a website or video tutorial that might help me make sense of this? Using Mint Mate 19.2. The connections icon in the panel does absolutely...

Re: Errors with Grsync when doing a Full Back Up

In general, I agree with you. Two remarks: 1. The clonezilla image will protecct my dual-boot setup, both windows and linux. Every now and then, however reluctantly, I do need windhoze (for instance to update firmware on my Garmin GPS). 2. Remembering all the packages you manually installed after y...

Thunderbird Unknown Timezones

Each time I fire up Thunderbird I'm seeing this message.

See Error Console: Unknown Timezones are treated as the "floating" local timezone.

Should I be concerned? Only references I see to this are via Google and they go back about 10 years.

Creating symlinks

Trying to create a DATA partition using instructions from https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/1609

One of the final steps calls for creating symlinks. Question is so where are they to be entered?

VPN options

Brand new to this subject. The idea of adding VPN protection appeals to me. Specially for the laptops and tablets. Wondering if it makes any difference which provider is selected in order to use one account with types of hardware? Latest purchase is a Samsung Android tablet. I see where PIA VPN has ...

Thunderbird local files

Is there a way to create Thunderbird local folders that don't automount? Over the years I have accumulated GB's of saved messages. Handy when I use the Thunderbird search function to find a specific item. But the memory load is high. Might there be a way to "mount/unmount"? I've tried experimenting ...

Re: Brother scanner not working, printer OK Mint Cinnamon 19.1

On my MFC-j450DW this note buried in the manual solved my problems. NOTE If you have previously configured the wireless settings of the machine, you must reset the network settings before you can configure the wireless settings again. On your machine, press Menu. Press a or b to choose Network. Pres...

With Windoz were you connecting wi-fi or usb? If wi-fi you may need to reset the device first. Tis in my manual! Learned about it the hard way.

Re: About changing the Linux Mint edition

Boot with your live media. Navigate to your existing /home. Open as administrator. In View select to show hidden files. Delete most of those hidden files. Use caution not to delete .mozilla or .thunderbird as they contain Firefox and email respectively. If you are using other applications like Slimj...

Re: AMD Ryzen build recommendations

OK, perhaps time to ask my question a bit differently. What sort of problems manifest themselves with Linux Mint 19.1 and Ryzen processors? Are we talking about the video display in general or the quality when used with high frame rate applications like games? Some people have had display problems ...

Re: AMD Ryzen build recommendations

Any recommendations to help achieve this most welcome. Such as motherboards with a certain chip or perhaps a Ryzen not newer than "X" so as to be compatible with current Linux kernels? Linux runs fine on Ryzen. You're probably better off to use a discreet video card rather than a Ryzen with on-boar...

AMD Ryzen build recommendations (SOLVED)

Reviewing this forum and the web with the help of Google it appears the AMD Ryzen series is more difficult to get up and running. I'm looking to assemble a general purpose, as in non-gaming, system. Hopefully one that will be fine out-of-the box so to speak. Downloading .deb files fine but wish to a...
