Re: Install on iMac

Will the Apple wireless keyboard and mouse pad work? I played with one for a very, very short period of time today and wasn't able to get them working. Based on the age could have been tired batteries. When the owner turned the iMac on without the flash drive present a fair amount of setup was requi...

Installed software

when using the command dpkg -l often times the resulting filenames are truncated.

Is there a way to force full descriptions? Or perhaps another command that will?

Re: Catweazel - over and out

Kindly reconsider. I tend to receive much more advice than I am able to return. Along the way I accepted a simple reality, that because of hardware differences results may vary even though the same software is being used. Never know in advance whose comments will resolve my issues. Along the way I a...

Re: Timeshift frustration

... If the OS is out of date the remaster flash drive can make it current in mere minutes. i don't think the intention of timeshift is to be able to carry your os to your family member and install it on their computer and i wouldn't mind if mint also included a nice remaster program that can also i...

Re: Timeshift frustration

I don't see where Timeshift would be an advantage. After all if the system is already "borked" what are the odds you can even access Timeshift ? Personally I like to use a remastered flash drive. That will restore my system default settings in about 5 minutes. Data already sits on separate partitio...

Re: Timeshift frustration

This thread has strayed pretty far from where I started it. I'm trying to use Timeshift, not as a backup to my personal folder, simply with the default settings. When I do so using a USB Flash Drive of 256 GB, it simply doesn't work per the description in my original post. Any ideas of what further...

Re: On-Line banking

To "chiefjim" and others, there are also TurboTax alternatives as well and posts on that too, search for "turbotax". Open Tax Solver http://opentaxsolver.sourceforge.net/index.html Thanks for the info on Open Tax Solver. Definitely worth learning more about. Fingers crossed that the new tax laws he...

Re: On-Line banking

Another vote for Kmymoney. Really liked Quicken right up until the sunset provision programmed in by Intuit took hold. Made me seriously look around for alternatives. Found Kmymoney was easier to navigate and had more of the features suited to me. And no sunset provision! Now if I could just find a ...

Re: Buy Computer with Linux Mint installed

This in my view is the best way to go, but always do your research before buying a bunch of parts. Agreed. My vendor of choice is Newegg. For things like motherboards I'll look at the reviews searching keywords Mint, Ubuntu, Linux. Odds are someone has made a pro or con statement. Never hurts to as...

Re: Buy Computer with Linux Mint installed

I recommend you consider a slightly different option - assemble your own. Anyone who has replaced an optical drive, added memory, or swapped out a power supply knows the inside of a desktop case is not scary. Start with a case that allows your hands to move around, I like the mid tower atx size. Sel...

Re: Memory usage log

New system is up and running with a couple surprises along the way. Neither Mint 17 nor Mint 18 work with the onboard ethernet adapter. Mint 19 beta does fine. Guess I'm an early convert to 19! Slightly disappointed in that I had high hopes Thunderbird filters would work better with more processing ...

Re: Grsync Issues

By "old school" I mean that rsync doesn't recognize files or folders which include a space. Using the underscore makes them easily readable by both man and machine.

Re: Grsync Issues

rsync and grsync tend to be old school. Try renaming your folders My_Book and Various_181009 Then make appropriate changes to the grsync command line. Best to have / at the end of the source and destination lines as well.

Re: Memory usage log

Opted to do both. On order is 16gb ram along with a 120gb ssd.

Wondering with that if the need remains for swap space? The extra installed ram will be larger than my I current setup comprising 8gb ram, 4gb swap

Re: Memory usage log

I do not have an SSD, never did. The motherboard I'm looking at, GIGABYTE H370M D3H has provisions for two M.2 devices. At this point my lack of knowledge regarding these is a major drawback. Simple questions like could one be used in place of the root partition on the hard drive. I suspect the answ...

Re: Memory usage log

Appreciate the response. I too have long promoted additional memory as a form of upgrade. Most often for people who felt their computer was just slower than it used to be. Next in line a replacement higher capacity hard drive with additional cache. Yet having said that I also feel there are practica...

I'm nearing the point where I'll be ordering components to upgrade this system. Currently have 8gb of ram. Before I spend money for 16gb are their logs that will show what my peak needs were for say the past 30 days?

IMO, ...Cloud based backups are 'BAD', Really Bad, as they put your stuff "out there" to be hacked. ...And, they require that you always have access to the Internet, ...and pushing gBytes of data upstream is a huge cost factor, ...extUSB HDD are the best way to go, separate from the PC/laptop and c...

Re: URL or saved file?

I understand the clearing of the cache. But there are MB's of others in there I'd prefer to retain. Is there a way to selectively search within those cache files?
