Re: Home on separate partition

I am a very strong proponent for having home as a separate partition. It made upgrading from Mint 19.3 to Mint 20 virtually painless. Also, as has previously been pointed out, it is much easier to restore a system that has been clobbered for whatever reason, when root (system) is on its own partitio...

Re: LAMP or XAMPP or Individual Installs of Apache, MySQL, & PHP?

I would recommend installing each component individually. I installed MariaDB and I am using Mint 20 This is a pretty good tutorial: How to Install MySQL on Ubuntu 20.04 . Just substitute MariaDB where appropriate. Words of caution: 1. Note the discussions of auth_socket and mysql_native_password 2....

Re: MYSQL upgrade to 0.8.15-1 problems...

Do you have your home directory on a separate partition? If you do, then you can do a " fresh " install of Mint 20 into the root directory. However, before attempting that you will need to read-up on how that is done. If you don't have a separate home directory you may want to look into creating one...

Re: MYSQL upgrade to 0.8.15-1 problems...

Your post raises several questions. Where did you get version 8.15-1 of MySQL? The possibility exists that if you do not use the official version supplied from the Mint repository, that if may not work as Andy_543 notes. I had a problem with MariaDB when I tried to go beyond what was provided throug...

Re: NTFS partitions mount as read-only, not read-write.

Here is a copy of my fstab line for mounting the Windows partition as read-only. For reasons of safety, it seems that you must have the Windows partition mounted as read-only. The reason, I believe, in a couple of cases, an upgrade to Windows, (unknowingly) re-activated fast boot which ended up caus...

Re: How to check or mount Windows Hard Disk from Mint?

See the attached image: menu.png At the lower left there is the Mint logo, for the Mint menu. Click on that logo and it will open the list of items you see in the image. Enter disks in the search bar. After that you will see the item disks just below the search bar. Click on it to activate disks .

Re: How to check or mount Windows Hard Disk from Mint?

Quick first step. From your (live) USB flash drive, access disks . You can access disks from the Mint menu which is normally in the bottom left hand corner of your monitor. Disks after it is activated should provide you with a " map " of your "C" drive assuming it is not dead. By default, none of th...

Re: Can older Timeshift files be deleted?

So I can delelete ALL of my Timeshift snapshots as long as I dont delete the second to last snapshot? No. If you delete any intervening snapshot between the first and last, things will get screwed-up. When you believe it is appropriate, delete all snapshots (to make a new base snapshot) and start t...

Re: Can older Timeshift files be deleted?

Please see this tutorial: Timeshift and the Settings Deleting older Timeshift files must be done cautiously. Timeshift does an incremental backup of the system files, which means that if you delete an intervening back-up it may screw-up subsequent backups. For example, if you have backups #1,#2,#3 a...

Re: Samba and Mint20

A very very big thank-you to altair4 for providing this tutorial/solution. The tutorial was very informative and provided the solution I needed following my upgrade to Mint 20. The SMB1 protocol may be very old and vulnerable. The question arises as to whether those supporting SAMBA will be updatin...

I don't have that scanner, but according to SANE it is a supported scanner. http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html#Z-CANON http://www.sane-project.org/man/sane-pixma.5.html Ubuntu has this tutorial: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/sane It appears that SANE is not available through the Mint rep...

Re: What distro would you use for your main daily driver other than Mint?

I would like to get away from derivative distros. A such I would look into Debian and/or ArchLinux. Based on internet search results, ArchLinux looks to be a good opportunity as I have found many answers that were provided by the ArchLinux user community. RedHat might be a viable option. I've know a...

Re: What are your 'must have applications/software'?

An absolute must, personal accounting software, such as KMyMoney or GnuCash.

Additionally: LibreOffice, MariaDB, Firefox, and Google. Plus other utilities from the Mint repositories on an as needed basis.

MariaDB, also implies the need for Apache2, PHP, and PhpMyAdmin

Re: Help: Simple Database OR Address book on steroids

I want to run a simple "database" for email contacts with nothing more than a flat-file spreadsheet and a single form view, but I need to be able to add fields freely, and I want that form view. Technically, what you are asking requires a database, not a spreadsheet. However, for simple pseudo data...

Re: [SOLVED] Epson V600 permissions?

In upgrading to Mint 20, I needed to re-examine the drivers for my Epson Perection V600 scanner. Still not supported by sane. However, there are new updated drivers.
