Re: Foxclone - linux image backup, restore & clone

Drugwash - just in case you read my response that way, no criticism/offence implied. Just that I'd like to do something else for a while. No worries Andy, we're cool. The information is out there should you or anyone else need it. People helped me in time and I like to help too whenever/however I c...

Re: Foxclone - linux image backup, restore & clone

Andy, your work is appreciated. Clonezilla is a mess, I would never use it. The information I offered was all in good faith, hoping it would help in some way. And I myself am a newbie in regard to Linux - for 20 years I've been running MS-DOS and Windows, so all the Linux stuff is new to me. Nobody ...

Re: Foxclone - linux image backup, restore & clone

Sorry, it was not sector size but block size - my bad. The block size issue popped up in Boot Repair's log - dunno what this is related to: Warning: The driver descriptor says the physical block size is 512 bytes, but Linux says it is 2048 bytes. The log is 54.2kB in size. I believe our personal kno...

Re: Foxclone - linux image backup, restore & clone

What I did was deliberate. I wanted a larger target partition than the initial one was. For an exact clone one of the tools used in the process should provide an automatic way to create, or shrink or enlarge an existing partition to the exact size of the source. Shouldn't be hard to do. It's not onl...

Re: Foxclone - linux image backup, restore & clone

As proven in my previous post here , a raw image of a partition (even boot one) can be restored to another partition of any size, provided the target size is at least equal to the source size. Haven't tried with a smaller target, not sure if the Disks utility would be able to trim the free space of ...

Re: Foxclone - linux image backup, restore & clone

Just a follow up to say that I managed to restore to the new HDD the partition created earlier with Disks. I made some errors at first attempt, then got the right idea and went on to success. For restoration I used Disks , GPartEd and Boot Repair from the Mint live disc. First I tried to restore the...

Re: Burning rewritable DVDs

Thank you for all the details. xorriso is not installed and don't quite need it for now. Since I already restored an earlier image to the new HDD, both xfburn and Brasero are also missing now; will reinstall them maybe, later. It's been a long while since last working with CD-RW or DVD-RW but I vagu...

Re: Foxclone - linux image backup, restore & clone

An image of a partition without something to say where it lives (the partition table) is useless. Can't see a reason why an application couldn't copy the source partition table and extract only the relevant information, then fit that information automatically, or allow the user to manually specify ...

Re: Foxclone - linux image backup, restore & clone

Thanks for replying. From what you said I gather this tool cannot create a clone - or image or whatever it may be called - of only one partition of choice , namely the boot+system. I specifically said I do not want anything else from the source drive. The three 2TB drives are all external, connected...

Re: Foxclone - linux image backup, restore & clone

Just found out about this application. Sounds great, if only it does what I need. I did read all comments but still unclear about my particular situation, so thought best thing was to ask directly. Got a 500GB HDD in this notebook and it's failing; it was an emergency install before buying a working...

Re: Burning rewritable DVDs

Got a very bad memory and no habit of keeping logs of what I do, unfortunately. Right now I burned that Mint 19.3 ISO with Brasero and apparently everything went fine. One of these days I'll try to clone the system partition of this failing HDD using FoxClone , restore it on a fresh HDD and try an u...

Re: Burning rewritable DVDs

In prior installations I had both Brasero and K3b installed; this one is a fast emergency install with very few of the previous applications. I now installed both xfburn and Brasero - apparently xfburn has many more dependencies. Screenshot from 2020-05-22 14-22-22.png vs Screenshot from 2020-05-22 ...

Re: Burning rewritable DVDs

Thanks but as mentioned above I'm using Cinnamon. Wouldn't this install trigger certain dependencies since it's made for Xfce?

Burning rewritable DVDs

Got a few DVD-RW discs and need to burn data on them (Mint ISO image etc). Some already have data, must first be erased.
What known and reliable application(s) would you recommend for that?
Currently running Mint Cinnamon 19.2 x64.

Re: About updating Cinnamon

It would be far easier and quicker if you took a disk image then upgraded to 19.3. Thank you. Thing is, I had ugly issues with upgrading in the past and just can't find it in me to risk a working machine again. There are too many tiny things to check for and readjust if necessary; already had to re...

About updating Cinnamon

Got a few questions about updating Cinnamon in Mint 19.2 . Main reason is to get rid of the "window jumping" bug. Don't want to upgrade the whole system to 19.3 or anything else. Here we go: 1. Is it actually possible to update only Cinnamon? 2. If yes, would there be any issues with other system co...

Re: Good reasons to always use ad-blockers

Reason why I still use an "old-style" browser is the old trusty add-ons I know and are already configured. Most important are ad-blockers, of course. Of them all, YARIP is a very interesting one because it not only allows permanently removing individual elements from a web page but can also modify i...

Re: gm10's Linux Mint Tools PPA

Thanks guys, it looks like we're all guessing, nobody knowing anything for sure. The post count may well be a coincidence. If I ever got to know the man, in the very least he would've said something, anything. Last thing I remember in this topic is him promising to look into some issue, here . Doesn...

Re: gm10's Linux Mint Tools PPA

Could anyone please clear things up for those of us still in the dark?
1. What exactly happened to gm10?
2. Is his PPA still available and compatible to Mint?
