Re: Mint 18.1 Cinnamon Nemo does not show internal drives

I am running Linux Mint Cinnamon 19.2. Currently my version of Nemo is 4.2.2. To get internal drives to show up in Nemo, I add the property x-gvfs-show to the comma-separated list of properties in the relevant line in /etc/fstab. For example, one entry looks like this: UUID=12345ABCD /share/data ntf...

Re: xsane fails to open brother scanner (linux mint xfce 19.1)

I am running Linux Mint Cinnamon Tina (19.2) and wanted to scan with the Brother MFC-7840W multi-function machine. Printing worked with no additional effort on my part but scanning was problematic. After installing/updating the sane packages and the drivers from Brother, adding myself to the scanner...

Re: Automounting a new internal (SATA connected) SSD drive

Thanks to everyone, especially rene , for the help I received here. I was able to successfully edit the /etc/fstab to have the new SSD drive mounted during system start-up and working as before when I made a temporary mount using the Disks app. I learned a lot more about file systems along the way. ...

Re: Automounting a new internal (SATA connected) SSD drive

Thank you rene for your comprehensive and deep reply! It seems that you work on kernel development for Linux so my hat is off to you! In general, I rely on tech support when my efforts fail to produce a solution. On VMWare Workstation 15 , changing the pathname of a .vdmx file apparently requires th...

Re: Automounting a new internal (SATA connected) SSD drive

Thank you pbear and rene for your advice! It is appreciated. Unfortunately, I am not able to change the mount point. I discovered too late that by using Disks to mount what was planned as a permanent drive that the mount point would not be ideal in the larger scheme of the file system architecture. ...

Automounting a new internal (SATA connected) SSD drive

I am a newbie running Linux Mint Cinnamon 19.2. I have an NTFS formatted SSD drive which I need to mount as /media/daisuke/SSD2. This system has one user, myself! The drive should not be shared or accessible to a hacker. The application which has access to the drive runs with elevated privileges. I ...

Re: How To: Use the "Open as Root" Context Menu in Nautilus

To Smurfos , Thanks for the encouragement! Also, for clearing up my confusion over the use of Nautilus and Nemo. As my image shows, I am using Nemo ! To BG405 , Thanks for the comment. My error was in calling the Mint-Cinnamon File Manager Nautilus, not its correct name of Nemo . A rose by any other...

How To: Use the "Open as Root" Context Menu in Nemo

I am new to Linux having come from a Windows environment. I am using Linux Mint Cinnamon 19.2 and really think it is great, once you learn about some of its niftier features. Today, I wanted to backup (copy) some files which were generated by an application which I run as root using sudo. I found th...

Re: [Solved] Pin a launch icon to the panel

Thank you! I have many fronts to tackle as I come up to speed on Linux.
I have worked on Unix systems in the past, Solaris primarily. But for the last 20 years, I used Windows.
But your suggestion is in my queue! So glad I finally made the switch :)

Re: Pin a launch icon to the panel

Thank you so much smurfos and blueocean for your helpful replies. I do have the Cinnamon "flavor" of Linux Mint and will remember to include that information next time. Although I tried to follow your helpful suggestions, another problem appeared, cascading off the original change to the panel. This...

[Solved] Pin a launch icon to the panel

I am running Linux Mint 19.2. After installing some applications, I had both a desktop icon and an icon in the task tray, aka panel on Linux (I think). If I right-clicked on the desktop icon, there was an option to "pin to panel" which was useful. This has disappeared. If I use the LM menu to find a...

Re: ISO downloads from 2 mirrors fail verification

my earlier tutorial "How to verify a Linux Mint 18 ISO image on Windows", the first ever written to cover the specific subject completely. I found your tutorial here https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=229292 and read it through a couple of times. It is very detailed and takes the rational...

Re: ISO downloads from 2 mirrors fail verification [SOLUTION]

Rene - Thank you! When I right-clicked on the links to sha256sum.txt and sha256sum.txt.gpg, I was not given an option to save the file. Instead I tried to open a link to each. In the case of the file sha256sum.txt.gpg, a dialog box popped up giving me the option to either open or save the file. So ...

Re: How to verify the ISO image on Windows

I guess my confusion was around the idea of saving a link. I have been thinking too literally I guess (for many years!), i.e. saving a link meant the link string and not the contents of the link in a file. I just tried "Saving Link As" and voilà! the contents of the file pointed to by the link was s...

Re: How to verify the ISO image on Windows

The directions tell us to right click on the link and choose "Save As...". This was not an option on the right click menu in my Firefox browser running on Windows 8.1. Since "open link in a new tab" was a right-click option, I tried this. For the file sha256sum.txt.gpg a dialog box popped up allowin...

Re: ISO downloads from 2 mirrors fail verification

To polarvortex . I do not think it is very nice to imply that I was deliberately not following directions exactly . As anyone following a tutorial knows, systems vary, and sometimes the instructions provided do not lead to identical results as was the case here. A right click in the browser did not ...
