Re: Copying files to another hard drive, part II

And when you've done that, install Midnight Commander, a test based file manager! Much better and faster than using a GUI :D

sudo apt install mc

Re: why thunderbird, a local mail program, is installed by default?

Because the POP3 account from my provider does not have a web interface. I also have two other accounts, one personal and one work and I'm not having multiple browser tabs open for them, I want them all in the same place, in Thunderbird! I hate web interfaces anyway!

Re: KDE on Mint 19

You could install KDE Plasma but you might not get the latest version (5.17.5) You would have to enable the Kubuntu backports PPA for Kubuntu 18.04 to stay up to date. Plasma 5.18 is just around the corner with lots of fixes and new features. To get he latest version you would either have to use KDE...

I run both the Facebook Container extension and the Multi-Account Container extension. I need to access two Google accounts (Private and Work) from Firefox. Works a treat!

Re: Install to new SSD

I recently swapped my 320Gb HDD for a Crucial 500Gb SSD in my older Lenovo Thinkpad. I just made a 30Gb / (root) partition, an 8Gb Swap partition and formatted the last partition as /home. I'll be doing the same for the boss's machine pretty soon but since her machine is newer it will need an EFI pa...

You can also try Gnome Calendar if you want a standalone app. I installed that on the boss's machine, along with Gnome Maps and Gnome Weather.

sudo apt install gnome-calendar

Re: Cinammon alongside MATE and removing default XFCE

When you boot from a Flash drive, before Linux boots, edit Grub and add:

nomodeset

after the "quiet splash" entries.

On the line starting with

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=

Save and boot normally. That should cure the black screen on boot problem.

I think I lied earlier in the thread, my first computer was a Dragon 32. I think my brother still has it and it still works!

Re: Firefox, set default browser window every time I open it

In the URL bar type "about:config" and search for "default" the top several lines will have a couple of entries for checking the default browser. Double click on "true" and it will switch to "false" on both of them. Restart Firefox and all should be well. I was having the same problem :D

Re: Issues trying to install KDE

I agree with the choice of KDE Neon. I'm back on it now, although the boss is, and will keep using, Mint Cinnamon. I like the minimal install, with only Firefox and VLC installed by default. There's no sign of that horrible KMail either! You can build the system up as you please with just the apps y...

Re: 750 MB. WOW! "What would you do with SO MUCH hard disc space ?"

My first PC, an NEC PC-9801RX only had twin 5" floppy drives  I believe the CPU was NEC's in-house V30 CPU, based on Intel's 8086. I paid an arm and a leg for a 100Mb SCSI external drive. There was no sound card either, that was also a separate purchase, as was a copy of MS-DOS (Not IBM PC co...

Have you told it the IP address of the scanner in Terminal?

brsaneconfig4 -a name=SCANNER model=DCP-J973N ip=192.xxx.1.xxx

replace x with the actual address..

I remove Flatpak support (and Mono) as a matter of routine. What helped on the boss's machine was increasing the load time from 20 to 25 seconds.

Change the Controls theme in Settings to Mint-Y-Blue or Mint-Y-Teal or whatever theme takes your fancy. I use Mint-Y-Red with red icons and dark red Desktop theme.

Re: LM Cinnamon 19.2, Update Manager icon missing in tray

OK. It looks like deleting the hidden .cinnamon folder in your home directory is the answer. I just tried it on the boss's PC and the update manager icon was there on reboot. You may have to set-up a couple of your custom Panel settings afterwards though. I may try rebooting it again later to see if...
