Re: keyboard / clicks unresponsive

Yep, reversion is always a nice option. I'll be sure to do plenty of backups too, before applying new kernels. But what does it mean when a kernel is no longer supported? After February, it seems the only supported Kernel for Mint will be 4.15. Why that one as opposed to kernel 5.x? Perhaps it is na...

Re: keyboard / clicks unresponsive

Well, my 2500U notebook seems pretty stable in the current configuration. It's been running non-stop for more than 13 days now, and that's with doing my simulations pretty much non-stop. Meanwhile, my desktop 1600X has been running non-stop for 45 days, still on the 4.15 kernel with no extra grub pa...

Re: missing "change desktop background" from context menu

I seem to be having the same problem, even followed all of the steps posted so far and everything checks out but still not able to change my wallpaper. Do you have any more ideas? Thank you. Wen you say you can't change wallpaper, do you mean at all, or just through right-clicking on the desktop? Y...

Re: new menu item not working

Try this method, which worked when I tested it. Open /home/me/Unigine_Heaven-4.0 (assuming me is your user name). Create a document named start-heaven or whatever. Add these lines: #!/bin/sh cd /home/me/Unigine_Heaven-4.0 /home/me/Unigine_Heaven-4.0/heaven Right click on the script and select Prope...

Re: new menu item not working

What the heck is up with this file? What happens if you open Terminal and run only heaven ? If nothing, take another look at Andy's post , above. Running just heaven returns command not found. ./heaven works though. This puzzles me though- i thought you could always run a program from the current w...

Re: new menu item not working

Been a while since I did this, but try right-click on the desktop, select "Create a new launcher here ... " and fill in the fields there. Use the form of command exactly as you run it in Terminal. No need to tick the box. Click OK. You'll get a desktop icon, then be asked whether to add to Menu; sa...

Re: new menu item not working

How did you install the program? It came as a downloadable .run file. I ran that, and it did the rest. But one thing it doesn't do is add an entry to the launcher menu. You may have to manually create at .desktop file in /usr/share/applications folder. Here's how to do that. https://www.maketecheas...

Re: new menu item not working

I'm using mate not Cinnamon, But I found a similar thing, the launcher needs to point to the command, not have the command in it. Also of course the command text, permissions needs to be set to execute. I don't know what this means. I do have the program set to be executable. And it does run from t...

Mint 19.x Cinnamon screensavers

Hi all- One thing about Mint i'm not liking is the screensaver. It's really basic- can't even had a slideshow- just the standard desktop background with a darkened screen. So i'd like to change my screensaver. There are lots of options in the software manager, but i have read that the Cinnamon scree...

Re: new menu item not working

Hi- The exact command is: /home/me/Unigine_Heaven-4.0/heaven When i copy/paste that from the menu into a command prompt, it launches correctly. The menu item was created manually through the menu: right-click on the Mint icon, configure / Menu / Open Menu Editor , and then New Item under games. I gi...

[SOLVED] new menu item not working

Hi all- I am using Mint 19.1 Cinnamon. I have installed the Unigine Heaven benchmark. I have manually created a new menu item for it, but it won't launch from there, and i don't know why. The program does run properly when run from a command prompt. Does anyone know why this doesn't work and how i c...

Re: Nemo resource usage

Just a followup on this... I've been using Caja for nearly a week now. Its usage can still grow, but not as quickly as Nemo. It occurs when i leave the file manager viewing a folder that is re-writing files over and over. Unlike Nemo though, the Caja process is actually ended when the window is clos...

Re: understading cpu clockspeeds

Whatever you do: install the latest kernel of the 5.0 series , because that's best for AMD Ryzen CPU's. Update Manager - panel: View - Linux kernels. Reboot after installing it. I have not tried the 5.0 kernel yet. In another thread i have been discussing stability issues with the Ryzens and variou...

Re: understading cpu clockspeeds

It's on all the cores, but variably so. One moment it'll be core 1 jumping over 2.5GHz, and the next moment it'll be core 4 jumping to 2.5GHz while core 1 drops back to 1.3GHz... So the behavior is just all around confusing to me... -Fizz That's normal. That part i'm not worried about. It's the fac...

Link to BIOS download page for Inspiron 5575, instruction for DOS flashing at bottom of page. https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=fvmpc You can use unetbootin to creat freeDOS boot USB: https://unetbootin.github.io/ Well, when i said "per Dell's instructions",...

Re: understading cpu clockspeeds

It is not dual boot, it's Linux only. The bios update is supposedly done through a flash drive on boot- it shouldn't have to do anything with the OS so far as i understood. Below is the result of the inxi call: System: Host: Minty Kernel: 4.18.0-25-generic x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 7.4.0 Desk...

Re: understading cpu clockspeeds

The applications are the Python simulations that i'm running- four separate processes. So why they spike upwards is not surprising. Rather, the question is why the cpu goes higher when on battery rather than plug power. There is supposedly a new bios, but every time i have tried to update it (per De...

Re: keyboard / clicks unresponsive

Are you on the 4.18 kernel? I tried the grub parameters with 4.15 and had a couple of relatively quick freezes (within the day). But going back to 4.18 it hasn't crashed since. Also, did you run a sudo update-grub after you updated the grub file, and then rebooted? I hope that doesn't sound insultin...
