Re: Mint/WIN 10 dual boot

Hi and thanks again for the further guidance. I like the methods that pbear has given although the advanced method may be a bit above my tech. skills. Would things be simpler if I was starting completely from scratch. This would mean my hdd would be empty and I would install Win10 and Mint on it add...

Mint/WIN 10 dual boot

Hi all. I have been running Mint on my old (ex. win Vista) laptop for a few months now and would like to install it alongside Win. 10 on my desktop pc. As I understand, I will be given the option to do this when setting up to install Mint. Am I likely to run into problems with the existing Win 10 al...

Re: Startup problem

Hi and thanks for that.
I tried it and it works to shut down the system. Still no luck with start-up though. - See my origional post.

Thanks

Re: Startup problem

Oh dear. Things just took a turn for the worse. Whatever method I use for shutting down, I get a failure to boot up again next time. At that point I have to do the dreaded 5 second power button to shut back down. After doing that, when I fire up again I get the menu with 4 choices - start mint 19.1 ...

Re: Startup problem

Hi again.

Live with it for now I think. As I said in previous post- see what happens with future update.
I did run inxi -Fxz and got all info. Bios date 2007! Almost a vintage machine then.
Thanks for your help.

Re: Startup problem

Hi and thanks for the info. GM10. I re-installed the boot loader as you suggested but sadly no change. You are correct in that no bios update to be found anywhere. And, as you say, I have a simple workaround so maybe stick with that for the time being. I am looking at upgrading to 19.2 - possibly Ci...

Re: Startup problem

Hi again.

I did what you suggested - shutdown now- and the system closed, I was then able to reboot without problem.
Hard to tell what's going on really.

Re: Startup problem

Hi GM10
If I press Alt-F1 I do indeed get up the menu that is needed to perform a shutdown. If however I use this menu to shut down, then I am back with my problem of not re-starting next time at boot.

Re: Startup problem

Many thanks for your detailed reply 12K4. I notice that dual boot with windows is talked about in the boot repair fix. My laptop is running Linux Mint only. I don't know if this makes any difference. I had a look at the links you provided and have decided that maybe will do the upgrade to 19.2 as I ...

Re: Startup problem

Hi and thanks for your reply. My setup does indeed allow me press the power button for 1 second and get the shutdown/sleep/restart/cancel menu. Pressing for 5 seconds or longer will indeed perform a 'dirty' shutdown. I only use this as an emergency measure, for instance, as in my origional post, whe...

Re: Startup problem

Hi and thanks for your reply. I don't think you have understood my problem. While I fully understand the danger of shutting down using the power button you will see why I used this method to enable me to shut down the laptop. What I am trying to establish is what is causing the problem in the first ...

Startup problem

Hi all. I am a brand new user so am feeling my way around. I installed Mint Mate 19.1 32 bit on my old (ex Win Vista) Toshiba Satellite t45 about 2 weeks ago. Already I love it. Everything works without me having to mess with things. I have made sure that whenever updates showed as being available, ...

New and very happy user

Hello all. I am a brand new user of mint and am really getting to grips with it. I have a fairly elderly Toshiba Satellite laptop which was running Win. Vista (!!!). Not really an option to upgrade to a later Windows version, and so I started looking at other options. I installed Linux Mint 19.1 Mat...
