Re: Quick Cam Check Without Installing

Thanks Erginemr!

If there is no tool on the default live USB stick image, do we have instructions here in the forums for creating a modified image? Installing things during a live image run and doing a shutdown, do not save the changes onto the memory stick.

Thanks,
.Monty.

Quick Cam Check Without Installing

I like to look at second-hand laptops and when I find a bargain, I snap it up and install Linux Mint for family members. When I boot with my handy USB live stick, what tool can I use without installing anything further, to make sure the cam is working with Mint? From other threads I see people are u...

Re: Gaming and SSD use

Dear Bella, Before you wipe-out Windows for good, I hope you'll create a virtual disk image of it, and try Virtual Box. Sometimes I need to go back to the ole Windows system for things like memorized website passwords etc and though the virtual machine runs more slowly in the virtual machine, it can...

Re: Can I still use 17.3?

Ah, yes, a conundrum: If I was attracted to Linux because (among other reasons) so few virus and malware writers target it, then why the abject horror when someone brings up a question as to the risks involved in using an outdated system? Microsoft's continuing insistence on frequent updates has dri...

Re: Autologin Vs. Connected USB Drive

@AndyMH
Dear Andy,

Because Mint mounts volumes automatically, I don't even know how they're mounted. Should I unmount them using the Disks program or umount, then manually mount them in a specific way, then try a restart?

Thank you

Autologin Vs. Connected USB Drive

Mint 19 MATE 64-bit installed in an old Dell Optiplex, working as a headless server. Autologin set up and working, and a VNC server, and Samba. From start, I see the Linux Mint logo, brief flash of login screen then my expected desktop. So if I shut it off, plug in a USB flash drive or USB disk driv...

[Solved] Samba Shares Information

And just like that, it's working! I got the owner and the permissions changed on the directory, and now the shares are working.

Re: Samba Shares Information

Dear Altair, Good catch, thanks! Yes I meant "valid users," will make that change immediately. Yes that's the capitalization of my group name. But I think there's something more fundamentally wrong with my security settings in the target directory, because even in the Caja panel I'm getting "Permiss...

[Solved] Samba Shares Information

I have Linux Mint 19 installed on two computers, and I'm trying to create a Windows-compatible file share (because we have Windows computers also) on the desktop computer and connect to it from the laptop. When I attempt to connect to the file share from the laptop, I get a prompt for my user name a...

Request Specific IP Address

My Dell Optiplex running Mint 19.3 MATE surprised me by "just working" when I plugged in a Belkin USB WiFi device. This is going to be a headless server with Vino VNC host on it. I have that bit working; now I'd like to nail down the IP address. I would like to continue using DHCP because it's worki...

Re: kernel 5.0 vs 5.3 question.

Thanks, Joe, and very informative. Apparently the 4- series vs. the 5-series kernels are more about compatibility with the host hardware, than about performance improvements and updated OS and application software. So maybe I was better off with the 4-series one. Can anyone tell me what the major ch...

Re: kernel 5.0 vs 5.3 question.

I am also trying to understand kernel versions. When I saw my 19 Tara MATE system was still running a 4.15 series kernel when the latest is 5.3.0-53, I immediately installed the latest kernel so I could test it with all my software and hardware. I should have read some of the negative posts I've now...

Free Space System Monitor vs Disks

Thanks to everyone involved in the continuing work on Mint, and the online user community! Mint 19 Tara MATE here. I show a disagreement between System monitor and Disks as to how much free space my Linux partition has. I believe the root and user data are in the same partition. System Monitor shows...

Re: What to do with free space partition.

While transitioning from the Windows world to Linux, I partitioned the HDD with some free space in between the Linux partition and the Windows one, so I could add space to whichever one filled up first.

Re: Looking for a NAS with awesome Linux Mint support.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a NAS that works on local LAN only? When I looked up the Synology (even one a few years old) the documentation says plug it into the local network, make sure it has an Internet connection, then go to a public web site and the manufacturer will "find" my local ma...

Re: software - serious shortage of good board/card games

Re: Best Distro For Old Computers

Dear Legit, I recommend you add memory and flash the latest BIOS first, then try Linux Mint MATE from a live USB stick. Make sure you try your USB sockets, built-in pointing device, mic and speakers, Wi-fi, buttons for enabling/disabling Wi-fi, and for volume/mute. I think you'll find that Mint MATE...
