Re: Warning to new users about timing out of the forums.

CTRL-S is now my best friend Beware using that in vi or vim, or other shell-based editors. Ctrl-S freezes output from the editor so it looks dead. But it's not, and Ctrl-Q will turn output back on and you see the results of all your tappity-tappity "Huh, it's frozen" typing. Similarly, :w...

Re: How to make backups?

Tnx @AndyMH Excellent explanation +1 It confirms to me that I am taking the right approach to my backups. I use Timeshift for my / backups and use a bash scripts I've written to copy using rsync to backup the directories/files in my /home partition I want to keep. I used a similar approach when usi...

Re: Warning to new users about timing out of the forums.

If something is going to take a while, there is an option to save drafts of posts. Or you can make a draft in a word processor and cut and paste it into a post and then just do the mark-ups. I would go further to say that if you're using a text editor/word processor for your text, save often. I lea...

Re: Linux Mint 21.3 “Virginia” released!

I just upgraded. Everything works as before. :) The upgrade was very fast. Same here - whole process took less that 5 minutes. However, I had to reset to default mirror to pick up the latest version of minupdate to get the process started. It obviously hadn't propagated to my local on local mirror....

I discovered and now use the tldr utility for this purpose. Always go here before delving into a man page. Can be found here

Intermittent freezing in Cinnamon

I've been having a problem with intermittent freezing of the desktop which I've (so far) only been able to recover from with a hard reboot by pressing the reset button on the PC. When I have to do this, after restarting I make sure I shut down and restart my system once I get it going again. My syst...

Re: Thank you to those supporting others here!

I'd like to thank Clem and the team for an excellent distro. It's the only one I've (seriously) used since I started in full time Linux in 2019 (just over 4 years now). Also want to thank Pjotr for his Easy Linux Tips web site. So many valuable nuggets of useful information which I go back to from t...

Re: What is the .debris directory?

It has something to do with mega.nz: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=343140 Thanks for that. After a bit of investigation it appears to have occurred at the time I was searching for and deleting dupes. Not sure if it's related, but I had permissions altered to one of my directories off...

What is the .debris directory? [Solved]

Not sure if this one belongs in here, so here goes... I've been using the utility Czkawka to search for duplicate files/directories in my /home directory. One of the duplicates I found was located in a directory named .debris in my ~/Documents directory (see tree diagram below): /home/phil/Documents...

Re: Linux Mint 21.2 “Victoria” Cinnamon released!

I quite like the change of icons on the panel and will be sticking with it. I've yet to explore the changes in 21.2 but I like what I've seen so far. Great update and well done to the dev team!

Re: Linux Mint 21.2 “Victoria” Cinnamon released!

I'm not getting anything at all in System Reports. There's nothing in the edit menu of Update Manager. I find it odd nothing is appearing here despite the blog post stating the update for 21.2 is out. Edit: Followed instructions in the blog to obtain the latest version of mintupdate by resetting my ...

Running Code:Blocks from menu [Solved]

I have installed Code::Blocks via the software manager but it does not show up in the menu. I can run it but I have to do it via the Software Manager which is a little inconvenient. Is there a way I can get it to run from the menu? TIA System details: System: Kernel: 5.15.0-69-generic x86_64 bits: 6...

Re: Just as I thought...TIMESHIFT = useless.

So why wasn't this mentioned at ANY TIME while it was "saving" the snapshots? Knowing this now...could I simply create an EXT4 partition and copy these snapshots to that folder? I think that is a fair point. I've just had a look at the Welcome Screen which most new users will come across,...

Re: Just as I thought...TIMESHIFT = useless.

I know folks here love Timeshift, but I guess I'm a little low tech. I partition my hard drive so I can pave over root at anytime with no problems and keep my /home. All important data _is_ backed up to a 1TB external by just copying it over. My methodology is similar, but my Timeshift snapshots go...

Re: Future Ubuntu releases won't support Flatpak

When I read the article I thought break out the popcorn, sit back and watch . Well, I wasn't disappointed by the level of noise over this issue. The fact that you configure Linux that way you want is one of it's more endearing qualities to me. At the end of the day, who cares? I recall the snap issu...

Re: Restoring with Timeshift

I've only had to use Timeshift once and that was when I had to wind back a version in Linux Mint 19.3 (which worked successfully BTW). I am curious as to where your Timeshift snapshots are being stored. After reading some discussion about it here at the time, I decided it best to send my Timeshift s...

Ubunbtu dropping Flatpak

I read this article in The Register with interest. I can see there being a lot of chatter about this. It will be interesting to see how many flavours of Ubuntu remain after the dust settles on this one. I settled on Flatpak some time ago after Linux v snap issue. I enabled snap alongside Flatpak but...

So when the screen goes to screensaver mode and the monitor does not turn off, what do you see? 1) A login screen. 2) Your desktop or whatever you last had open 3) Something else What I see (as I am usually in another part of the room) is the screen going blank but there is something in the top rig...
