Re: Why do software sources only shows mirrors from americas?

Did not test it yet, maybe these ones: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?p=2418703#p2418703 https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?p=2419234#p2419234 Selecting an alternative "English" language locale turns out to be a far less intrusive workaround for most LM users. Thanks t...

Re: My software sources are on the other side of the world.

Alternative workaround found when answering https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=421628 For people who does have http://geoip.ubuntu.com/lookup returning result in the right format but wrong answer, one can block the site manually by xed admin:///etc/hosts then add an extra line 127.0.0.1 ge...

Re: Why do software sources only shows mirrors from americas?

They should make it that if geoip service doesn't work, have all servers in the world visible and available. It would make much more sense. Okay, I found this one workaround, maybe the most helpful for you: The Software Sources is in fact not hardcoding one to America mirror servers as fallback but...

Re: Why do software sources only shows mirrors from americas?

Your problem looks like a DNS problem. Your virtual machine is likely inheriting a badly configured DNS from your host machine. In your VM session, try forcing the DNS setting to 1.1.1.1 , a free DNS provided by Cloudflare. I tried this on main linux installation, i even tried multiple dns servers....

Re: Why do software sources only shows mirrors from americas?

As anyone can probably see. I's inside a virtual machine. I tested a fresh linux mint installation (obviously i got the iso from official website) and it's the same issue as on my actual linux mint install on other pc. What could be wrong with python on a fresh install. Your problem looks like a DN...

Re: Why do software sources only shows mirrors from americas?

How about you visit http://geoip.ubuntu.com/lookup in Firefox directly? In my computer, it shows This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below. followed by a piece of XML code, with <CountryCode>, <RegionCode>, <City> etc.

Re: Fractional display scaling in Linux Mint MATE

GTK3 only supports integer scaling. For 125% text, as in what I wrote in the old topic you linked, you can tune font DPI. In the old days, say 20 years ago, nobody needs GUI scaling. So, the old GTK toolkit decided to take the DPI value fetched from X11 as font scaling only. By the time of GTK 3.0 r...

Re: Directing program launchers to perferred panel

Cinnamon now by default use a "grouped window list" that combines pinned launchers and opened windows in the same panel applet. You will need to revert the panel back into using old applets "panel launchers" + "window list". Then you can place the "panel launchers&...

Re: Feature request: support of suspend-then-hibernate

But my questions is -- why my LM 21.1 Update Manager automatically offers me new 5.15.107.117 update while i see there tons of newer kernels - tons of 6.5, tons of 6.2, millions of 5.19? OK i tried to allow Update Manager to update my system and you know what ? It failed to install. So i removed 10...

Re: yt-dlp update from Pjotr

https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp You can use yt-dlp -U to update if you are using the release binaries If you installed with pip, simply re-run the same command that was used to install the program For other third-party package managers, see the wiki or refer their documentation Personally I use ppa...

Re: Newbie a bit concerned about security

Some more context on what I wrote about security policy loophole in phones https://www.technologyreview.com/2024/04/24/1091740/chinese-keyboard-app-security-encryption/ Almost all keyboard apps used by Chinese people around the world share a security loophole that makes it possible to spy on what us...

The same can happen in iOS. Apple being a walled garden doesn't mean it is better in this regard.

Re: Newbie a bit concerned about security

I know this has probably been asked a thousand times over, I guess Im just looking for a bit of reassurance, particularly coming from Android where I assumed all the Apps are 100% secure and safe. I disagree with the "all the Apps are 100% secure and safe" part of Android. Google will rem...

Re: "Why doesn't everyone do this?" features

I don't see how the new heat sinks can change themselves. The reason they won't work with the latches is they add to the thickness of the SSDs, making them too thick to fit under the latches. The chips don't span to the very end of the M2 stick. New heat sinks can reduce their length a bit without ...

Re: [SOLVED] Separate /home directory

If you don't use full disk encryption nor fancy filesystem format, a separate /boot partition within the same drive of "/" brings only harms and no goods to a modern Linux setup. Unless you mean the /boot/efi partition required for UEFI boot. Timeshift run as root. Mounting that partition ...

Re: "Why doesn't everyone do this?" features

I hope not! SSDs with added heat sinks usually will not fit the standoffs with screw-free latches. If a manufacturer puts them on a MOBO, they should be made removable and include replacement conventional standoffs. They are removable by screwdriver I think? And when such latches get popular enough...

Re: Why could we need Wayland more than Xorg (vsync & VFIO)

Wayland supports multiple-DPI (monitor scaling). It also added support of native fractional scaling recently. Although GTK3 is never going to get native fractional scaling backported unless we fork it ourselves, this will still ease some of the memory bandwidth burden. But we still need to wait all ...

Re: "Why doesn't everyone do this?" features

My 2 cents on this topic: Screw-free M2 latches. https://www.tomshardware.com/news/screw-free-m2-latch-asus That screw is tiny and easy to lose. Its size fits into the convention of laptops but is totally alien in desktops. It asks for a different sized screwdriver. Making M2 slots screw-free should...

Re: "Why doesn't everyone do this?" features

- BIOS updates from within the BIOS itself, like ASUS has. This is more a DIY motherboard convention versus laptop/branded PC convention. I am not sure if ASUS branded desktops and ASUS branded laptops guarantee one a BIOS update within the BIOS. Many new DIY motherboards are adding a new feature t...
