Re: A question about Cinnamon, Mate and Xfce editions [SOLVED]

Hi. Just fyi, for well over a year now I've been running Mate 19.3 on a 10+ year old hp dual core laptop w/only 3 gb of ram (Sys Monitor says its only 2.9) with little or no resource issues unless I open too many apps or too many web pages open when running Chromium. Firefox uses a little less but i...

Re: Install Linux Mint in old Mac (10.6.8)

Hi. As Pulegium noted you really need to provide more system info then some of use might be able to give you some meaningful suggestions. I think Mac os 10.6.8 is Snow Leopard so I'm not sure about that one but I can confirm Linux mint works pretty well 10.13.6, High Sierra. You might also want to c...

Re: A question about swap area

I've had the same question shortly ago, read pbear and pjotr's answer https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?p=1901290#p1901290 When you open system monitor from menu you can see how much mb in your situation is used by swap. In my case it's never been more then 300 mb! And normally just 3mb! T...

Re: A question about swap area

Is one method better than the other? I don't know, I don't use swap, and google is over there ---> OK, so I did some googling and found an awful lot on the swap subject, sometimes long winded, confusing and even contradictory. Then I found this thread on the linux mint forum: https://forums.linuxmi...

Re: A question about swap area

Does he really even need to worry about creating a swap partition? That's up to the poster, it's not for us to decide. That's understood and I certainly wasn't trying to make the decision for him. I was just asking the question of "would there be any benefit of having a swap partition and a sw...

Re: A question about swap area

With only 4GB of RAM, it might be worthwhile investigating the linux kernel's zRAM feature rather than using a swap partition because allocating 2GB out of your 4GB will give you an effective RAM of 8GB, ((4 -2) + (2 x 3)). There are many articles on the web. Hi. Does he really even need to worry a...

Re: Linux Base issue in Linuxmint 20

Unless you are having a specific problem I'm not sure why you'd look at that or what it's really telling you but out of curiosity I decided to look at mine and it appears to be essentially the same as yours, screen shot attached. But as also noted in the Comp. Op. Sys. Info. the Linux Kernel is curr...

Re: Chrome

4gb RAM, all worked OK 2 weeks ago. Something wrong with the latest Chrome update? Chromium and Firefox run without a hitch. I'd think that 4gb would be enough. What are you running, Cinnamon, Mate, Xfce? Are you taking Timeshift/Snapshots? If so maybe you should consider going back a few weeks whe...

Re: Installing Linux Mint 20

Hi. I never saw the link you posted below but it looks pretty thorough. Anyway, when I was considering going from 19 to 20 a good number things I ran across at the time suggested that upgrading from 19 to 20 could be very tricky, could require some higher level of expertise and terminal work to reso...

Re: Chrome

I have Sylvia. Chrome in full screen mode freezes, other browsers OK. Any Ideas? How much ram do you have? I have Chromium (suspect it might use about as much resources as Chrome would) on an old 3gb Mate 19.3 hp laptop and it works fine unless I have too many sites or other apps open. Then it'll s...

Re: Need help with Desktop Icons & Names

As I'd mentioned earlier in this thread it's not really all that important to me that Mate doesn't work 100% in this application, Win10 HP laptop/Vbox/Mate, as I never intended to use Mate on the hp anyway. My intent is and has been to run Mate on an imac where so far it works great. I was running M...

Re: Need help with Desktop Icons & Names

Clearly Cinnamon and Mate are different in how they deal with fonts. Mate has a thing called Font Viewer but I don't see no way in it to allow for scaling, or anyway else for the matter. So unless all41 has some suggestion/s of something to try I'm not sure what to try next.

Re: Need help with Desktop Icons & Names

try increasing your text scaling factor to 1.1 or experiment up to 1.3 that will increase font size a bit but tricky. don't know now how to set it in Mate Thanks. But other than looking in Control Center>Look and Feel>Appearances>Fonts or possibly File Manager>Edit>Preferences>File Manager Preferen...

Re: Need help with Desktop Icons & Names

changing icons does nothing for icon text . you want the fonts section in settings. Fonts Section > desktop font but good luck trying to separate words grammatically. linux window development is not built on grammar and some names may run out of it's text box or not be centered. but you're in Mate,...

Re: Need help with Desktop Icons & Names

One other thought on this--check Control Center/Look and Feel/Appearance. Under the Fonts tab click the Details button near the bottom, then look at the resolution setting. The default dpi setting is 96 Thanks, gave that shot and it was already at 96, tried a few others settings and still nothing, ...
